Trick Attack and Deadly Aim - Do they work together

Rules Questions

7 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

Subject says it, here's the wording that makes it questionable (paraphrasing for brevity):

Trick Attack
As a full action you can move then make an attack...

Deadly Aim
When you take the attack or full attack action...

It might be mincing words, but Deadly Aim specifies when it can be used in such a way that though one could reason by RAI Deadly Aim can be used in conjunction with Trick Attack, RAW doesn't support it.

Another example: As Deadly Aim in Starfinder doesn't discriminate between ranged and melee weapons as it did in Pathfinder; RAI could suggest that Deadly Aim works with the Charge action.

Charge
A full action that allows you to move up to double your speed and make a melee attack at the end of the movement.

However, RAW for Deadly Aim specifies only the attack or full attack actions - both Trick Attack and Charge are special full actions of their own.

While I can see it argued either way, I do believe it requires clarification since Starfinder is new, the intention of the rules is still more in flux. It could be a purposeful thing, or merely an oversight in wording as seen in the FAQ so far (ie, a Mechanic's Custom Rig acting as a MK1 comms device but the Equipment section having different comms device distinctions).

Seems compatible to me.

As you said, Trick Attack and Charge are full actions, neither are "the attack or full attack action". Therefore, as written, you can't use Deadly Aim on either a Trick Attack or Charge.
As for the intention, that could maybe be clarified

Grand Lodge

Just because charge and trick attacks are specific types of full actions doesn't stop them from being full actions. You use a full action to charge or use trick attack, and you can use deadly aim as part of a full action.
*Edit I see where the confusion lies since Deadly Aim states when you make a full "attack" action, but I highly doubt it was the writers' intentions to prevent you from using deadly aim on any sort of weapon attack roll unless explicitly stated otherwise, regardless of what type of action it is.

RAW it doesn't work, but they obviously have no problem working together, Deadly Aim really isn't worth it though

I know this thread is old, but there are no other threads about it and I wanted to share what I have found.

Trick attack is an Extraordinary ability and that falls in the special ability group. Since you cannot use Deadly Aim with a special ability you cannot use it with trick attack.

pg. 247 of Starfinder handbook for special ability and pg. 93 for trick attack.

Hope this helps.
