Quick question - Fire Shield (Wrath of The Righteous)

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

(Cross Posted the relevant part from a post I made on the wrong forum - sorry to the mods, I'd jumped to the latest post and missed the proper customs on posting in that thread.)

Is Fire Shield really supposed to only be discarded "At the end of YOUR turn", so playing it on another character's turn can allow it to be displayed for multiple turns in a row, until you take and finish your next one? Makes it a lot more powerful.

Most effects like it, from memory, tend to label "At the end of THIS turn" or "At the end of THE turn", or the like.

The fire shield only helps with your combat checks, so being able to leave it up over other people's turns, while still useful at times, is not a huge advantage.

Things like Incendiary Cloud help everyone so making them disappear at the end of "this" turn is more important.

I don't have exact data, but I suspect -contrary to Irgy's argument- that most of the "end of YOUR turn" spell actually do affect multiple characters. One such example you can find in WotR is Pillar of Life - where by the design of the card's power it is very obvious the intent is that it should stick around for a whole 'cycle' of character turns. At any rate, 'cycle-duration' spells are nothing new, and while only the devs can speak as to any particular card's intent - there's nothing in Fire Shield that suggests its wording is wrong (though it is quite a bit grating that it's called Fire Shield, but you can actually add the Cold trait with it, I'll give you that :)

I don't really see how this is contrary to what I said. I said that it rarely matters because it only affects your own checks, you're saying there's precedents for cards that last for a cycle and affect all checks, these points are compatible. All I did contrary was silently not dispute the OP's claim about "most effects like it".

Er... I don't have access to my cards at the moment, but from memory the Fire Shield does very explicitly say that it adds 1d8 and the fire or cold traits to a combat check from any character at your location. Maybe there was a reprinting that changed it? I don't see it in the FAQ.

Or maybe I'll read it when I get home and eat my words.

I based what I said on this image of it from the web, maybe there's different versions out there?

I have it as this:

Fire Shield wrote:

Display this card. While displayed, you may add 1d8 and the Fire or Cold trait to a combat check attempted by a character at your location.

At the end of your turn, if you do not have the Arcane skill, banish this card; otherwise, you may attempt an Arcane 12 check. If you succeed, recharge this card; if you fail, discard this card.

So, yes, it can last a whole "round" (not an official PACG term) if you play it on the turn after yours. Pretty sweet. There are other cards that have a similar duration.

That image is a community card from Drive Thru (and a pretty neat looking one at that). It looks like someone's attempt to convert "Fire Shield" from the RPG to the card game. But it isn't the official version of the card.

Ok, sorry for the confusion then. I'll keep that in mind when googling cards I'm not familiar with in the future :)
