Guide to Getting a Shield bonus while attacking with a Two Handed Weapon

I've compiled all methods of attacking with a Two Hand Weapon (or One Hand with both hands) and retain a shield bonus from a shield or gain a shield bonus.

I preferred solid defend-able conservative interpretations, over interpretations that may or may not work at most (if not all) tables.

X is the bonus the shield grants
Y is variable noted in ability

  • +X+1: Feat -> Taldan Duelist (requires falcata and buckler and combat trick to retain ac)
  • +X: Magus (Skirnir) -> Level 8 Spell Combat (buckler only)
  • +X: Item -> Anitmated Shield (move action for 4 rounds)
  • +X: Fighter (Thunderstriker) -> Level 19 (no action or caveats)
  • +X: Feat -> Unhindering Shield (nice but not PFS legal)
  • +X: Feat -> Shield Brace (polearm or spear group, ACP applies to attacks)
  • +Y+1 or +1: Feat -> Shielded Gauntlet Master (style path, Y=enhancement bonus of gauntlet)
  • +Y+1: Feat -> Kyton Shield (with spiked chain, Y=weapon enhancement)
  • +Y: Magus (Staff Magus) -> Level 7 Quarterstaff Defense (Y=Quaterstaff enhancement bonus)
  • +Y: Feat -> Force Shield Mastery (shield duration, limited uses, Y=1/3 fortitude bonus)
  • +4: Spiritualist -> Level 3 Bonded Manifestation (swift action and limited to rounds per day)
  • +4: Spell -> shield (standard action)
  • +4: Feat -> Shield of Swings (half your damage)
  • +2 or 4: Summoner (Synthesist) -> Level 4 or 12 (when fused and not PFS legal)
  • +2: Vigilante -> Level 2 talent Shield of Blades (Must have Power Attacked)
  • +2: Spiritualist -> Level 4 Spiritual Interference (near phantom)
  • +2: Spell -> silk to steel (standard action and rounds per level)
  • +2: Spell -> shock shield (standard action)
  • +2: Kineticist (Water) -> Level 2 Shroud of Water (level and burn based)
  • +2: Item -> War Lance (while mounted and not PFS legal)
  • +2: Item -> Ring of Force Shield (deactivate, attack, reactivate)
  • +2: Item -> Bracers of the Shield Mates (mythic and must be within 100 ft and not PFS legal)
  • +2: Fighter (Swarm) -> Race Kobold Level 5 Share Space (while in another creature's square and not PFS legal)
  • +2: Feat -> Orc Weapon Expertise (Defender and requires orc race and not PFS legal)
  • +2: Feat -> Underfoot (while in another creature's square, Ratfolk race boon required for PFS)
  • +1 or 2: Feat -> Cornugon Shield (with spiked chain, 2 if fighting defensive or total defense)
  • +1: Weapon (Meteor hammer) -> (fortress mode)
  • +1: Weapon (Bill) -> (Fighting defensively or full defense)
  • +1: Fighter -> Advanced Weapon Training Defensive Weapon Training (while using weapon training weapon and increases level based)
  • +1: Feat -> Weapon Trick (Two Handed Warding Weapon while fighting defensively or total defense or using Combat Expertise)
  • +1: Feat -> Swordplay Style (requires heavy blade, fighting defensively or total defense action or Combat Expertise)
  • +1: Feat -> Aldori Dueling Mastery (Aldori dueling sword in two hands)

If you find missing items or better options, please post. If I'm incorrect, please post.

Note: I didn't include things like Shield Focus (things that increase an existing bonus), Improved Shield Bash (things that don't work with two handed weapons), or things that last less than rounds per level.

Nice compilation. I think Vigilante's Shield of Blades is variable, tied to the Power Attack penalty, which, if I'm reading your nomenclature correctly, would make it +Y (Y = amount of Power Attack penalty).

Quickdraw shield plus Quick Draw feat plus a two handed weapon which you can also one hand like a bastard sword also works I believe.

Fighter Mutagen warrior or alchemist...extra arm...Hold shield with new arm.

Any weapon with the blocking special quality gains a +1 shield bonus to AC when fighting defensively. One of the best monk weapons, the sansetsukon, has the blocking special quality.

^ 100% THIS. Works SO well for casters who want to mix it up in melee. Though you only need a one-handed weapon to make it work.

The feat itself doesn't reduce you to one hand or reduce your damage. The reason your ACP for the shield applies is cause the shield on the arm that you're using gets in the way.

in PFS they changed the feat to have you wield the weapon with one hand and thus get reduced damage.

I was thinking both of these options were problematic per RAW. Whether, not, or how you have a Shield attached to your off-hand, when you attack with a 2 handed weapon, you are attacking with the hand that has the shield on it, and so in that round you you attack you won't get the AC Bonus due to Shield. But if you're sure it kosher, then go ahead.

Take 2 levels in Alchemist. Take Vestigial Arm. Use a 2 handed weapon in 2 of your hands. Use your Shield in your 3rd.

There is the Animated Shield Enchantment. Like Dancing, but for Shields.

Edit: oops, I see you have this one already.

Take 3 levels in Fighter with the Phalanx Soldier Archetype. You will be able to wield a Pole Arm--2 handed weapon--in one hand and a Shield in the other.

There is the Thunder and Fang Feat. You can wield a Klar in one hand and an Earthbreaker in the other. An Earthbreaker is a 2 handed weapon.

Losing your shield bonus if you make an attack with that hand is only a rule for the buckler, not a general shield rule.

Granted, it might fall under the "Hands of Effort" FAQ, but that's a whole can of worms we don't want to open.

+X: Race --> Kasatha: You have 4 arms, so 2 of them can hold a two-handed weapon and 1 can hold a shield, and you have 1 free for something else (an off-hand weapon, Metamagic Rod, Wand, etc.).

+X: Spell --> Alter Self: Choose Kasatha (see above).

+X: Spell --> Monstrous Physique series (I - IV): Choose any Monstrous Humanoid that has 4 or more arms (works like Kasatha above, but should be legal even if Kasatha is banned or house-ruled/Errata'd to be Monstrous Humanoid instead of Humanoid).

+X: Barbarian (Titan Mauler) --> Level 2 Jotungrip, although when it lets you wield a two-handed weapon in one hand (which imposes a penalty that takes several more levels to mitigate), you then end up treating it as a one-handed weapon.

Also note that when you get WAY up in levels, Skirnir Magus lets you keep your Shield Bonus with any type of shield even when using your shield hand to cast spells with Somatic components, but well before you get that far, you should be able to cast Monstrous Physique (actually Monstrous Physique I is a 3rd level spell, so you even get ability to cast it 1 level before you get Shielded Spell Combat).

I was thinking about that Hands-of-Effort-action-ecomony FAQ. I don't want to derail good Mr. Risner's thread with a rules debate: that would be wrong.

But even if it is technically correct--the best kind of correct--I thought it would be useful to point out that some GMs would have a problem with those character build features and explain why.

Link me a thread talking about "buckler not shield" rule.

The hands of effort issue is what this thread is attempting to avoid. SKR has said a 3rd arm = goes against RAI but allowed with rules as written now in the vestigial arm thread.

You won't be getting two handed damage for the earth breaker when you wield it like that. I suspect the OP wants both the shield bonus AND the two handed damage.

The Psychic-only spells Mental Barrier I-V give a scaling shield bonus (from +4 to +8) for 1 round as an immediate action and at the highest levels also give a chance to ignore sneak attacks/crits.

You won't get the 2 handed, +1.5 Strength bonus, but the Earthbreaker will still do 2d6, won't it? Where is the rule that says it doesn't?

It'll still do the 2d6, but it's the 1.5x str and 1-for-3 power attack tradeoffs that'll get you the most bang for your buck.

I'm not sure if it got mentioned, but you can just use a shield as a two-handed weapon. Nothing restricts doing so.

The imagery is a bit silly, but it works.

The Exchange Owner - D20 Hobbies

I'm interested in 1.5x and 1-for-3 PA, so "one-handed" is out.
What's the RAW on losing your AC if you attack using the shield arm? Is that only on buckler?

    Liberty's Edge

Only the buckler allow you to have the shield at the same time you attack but looses the shield bonus.
d20pfsrd doesn't show the shield feats from armor master's handbook, but I think Unhinged shield did something about keeping the buckler shield bonus while attack with that hand.

The Exchange Owner - D20 Hobbies

I'm thinking more for Quick shield and ring of force shield. Is there any rule saying you lose the AC of the shield if you used your off-hand to wield a weapon this turn? Like there is in the buckler write up?

I'd say no. It says wielded as a heavy shield which states it can't be used for anything else.

Small grey area in that it says it's so heavy as the reason you can't, and obviously that shield is weightless. But it falls under hand action economy as "wield as" to me.

Look up the description on bucklers.

It's not mentioned for other shields, because you absolutely can not wield both a two handed weapon and a shield larger than a buckler unless you have more than two fully functional arms*.

Drahliana, you can with say Ring of Force Shield (turn off, attack with 2HW, turn on) and you can with Quickdraw Light Shield (with Quick Draw feat, stow, attack with 2HW, draw and don).

Question is there a rule forbidding this?

That is never the correct question. The question is is there a rule that enables this.

The answer is that the force shield is not the rule that will do this for you as the ring is wielded as a heavy shield which means that it requires the FULL use of the off hand to do so.

Which brings you back to the three fully functional arm requirement to do what you want... even with this ring.

That is correct from the general rule that anything hanging off the same arm as one bearing a weapon imposes that penalty.

And James, the fact that normally Bucklers are the only things you can normally do these things with does suggest an intention in the rules on how things should work with Shields that are even heavier than Bucklers.

And while normally I generally don't care about rules intent, you do.

Although, you only lose the AC bonus for your Buckler after you use it and only until the start of the next round. That means that if you lose Initiative or Delay Action you can take advantage of the Free Action game mechanic to gain this mechanical advantage.

And if you have no problem exploiting Free Actions in order to gain mechanical advantage with a shield, I have an additional suggestion.

    But you know that.

Interestingly enough, you also take that -1 to Attack whenever you attack with a Scizore, which also grants a +1 Shield Bonus to AC. This is a bit of a tangent from what the OP is asking for, but it's interesting to think of the Scizore as sort of a Bastard Sword wielded with a Buckler attached to the same arm.

Does wielding a shield while attacking with a Dancing two-handed weapon count? (Note: The weapon property description doesn't say whether the Dancing weapon keeps using your Strength bonus or feats.)

I think Dancing will have a lot of table variance in what is the Strength bonus and whether or not feats apply.
