Where did the pie charts go?

Seriously, what is happening to them? They seems to be all-but replaced by ring-shaped charts, which Google tells me are called "doughnut charts." I started noticing them on news shows when the talking heads would bring up charts, and those charts... were not pie. I don't remember the first time, but it couldn't have been more than a year.

Then I get a new computer with Windows 10, and when I right-click my c-drive to check its capacity, the chart I was shown? It was a doughnut! NO PIE!

It's like someone decided a year or so ago, that pie charts would be replaced by doughnut charts. And the rest of the world said "Yes! Although pie charts are perfectly functional and aesthetically pleasing, we will cease using them for no reason whatsoever. Now is the age of the doughnut chart!"

Am I the only one who has noticed this? I feel like Donald Sutherland in Invasion of the Body Snatchers or Rowdy Roddy Piper in They Live... except with charts instead of aliens. And probably not an imminent threat to mankind. But seriously sheeple, I'm giving you a choice: either put on these glasses or start eating that trash can.

I can't help but think that people aren't taking this seriously enough. Would it help my case if I fashioned a cardboard sign with pie-chart-related rants scrawled on it and wore it at an intersection while shouting at cars? Because I've got nothing going on tomorrow.

I find the doughnut charts weird, but not especially awful.

My guess is that it's a fad - hard to say whether it's a fad that will become a new, lasting norm, or just a fad that will later go the way of most such.

Incidentally, I like pie. And pi. And doughnuts.

Really though I know it's a tiny inconsequential dumb thing to notice, but I'm a guy on the internet so that's my forte. It's just weird how one day something can not exist at all, then the next day be everywhere. And while that is the definition of a fad, it's not like we're talking hair styles or jorts here (jorts are still in fashion right? Because that's literally all I own pant-wise).

A doughnut chart means you have to extrapolate the dividing lines between fields into the center. At least I have to. I suppose I find them less intuitive than pie charts. But then, pie charts are a central part of Powerpoint poisoning, so meh.
