Elven Curved Blade art

Shadow Lodge

Is there any official art yet of someone using an Elven Curved Blade? The picture of it in Ultimate Equipment is not very good at relaying scale and looks like it's been bent against a rock a few times. (Actually, most of the weapons there look a bit... well they're certainly not masterwork weapons.)

Googling it comes up with a few pieces that look like they might be paizo art... but no guarantee's that what they're holding is an ECB. One of them notably is using an Aldori Dueling Sword.

It also comes up with a lot of Lord of the Rings style elven swords... which have huge handles and aren't nearly as curved as the one in Ultimate Equipment.

If you look at the Elves of Galarion book, there is someone leaping while wielding an Elven Curved Blade.

The guy in the background on the cover? Hmm. Seems more in line with the long-handled & straighter LotR style swords than the one in UE.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

"You see those Elves from Golarion? They've got curved swords!

Curved. Swords."

Shadow Lodge

lol

So far, I've only found one NPC in all of pathfinder who uses an Elven Curved Blade. Groval Thurson in Wayfinder 3. Still got a lot of books to go though.

It's kind of a weird weapon - a two-handed finesse blade. Most two-hander builds focus on strength, and don't require finesse.

I built an NPC rogue a while back to take advantage of sneak attack with the elven curved blade. Wondering now--don't have Ultimate Intrigue yet but having just seen people talking about Starry Grace, which I take it is for starknives specifically, being "starry" and all--if there's a feat out there like Starry Grace that would allow one to go DEX-and-a-half with the curved blade.

Sorry, no -- pretty much every Dex to damage feat only works with weapons that can be wielded in one hand. Slashing Grace would cover the elven curve blade if you could find a way to wield it as a one-handed weapon.

The Unchained Rogue gives Dex-to-damage and Weapon Finesse with a single weapon without feats. It was also FAQ'd that it does in fact give 1 1/2 Dex to damage for the rare two-handed finesse weapon. Like the Elven Curved Blade.

Of course, you have to take at least three levels of Unchained Rogue to get that benefit.

True, but if the inspiration for the character is a Rogue then that's a good thing, no?

Yes, I was just pointing that out for the benefit of anyone hoping to get this effect solely through feats.

Yeah, that'd be perfect. Thanks for pointing it out.

I never have picked up Unchained, either. Guess it's time.

This is what I've managed to find today. There are 5 pfs scenarios where someone wields has one. Only one of those has a picture, and that's of an archer who happens to have one as a backup... and looks like a shortsword.

Outside of scenarios, they show up 5 times, looking radically different each time. Do people not realize it's a two-handed weapon?

Oddly, these are wielded by: 2 elves, a drow, a ghoul half-elf, a dwarf, a half-orc, and fire elementals.

wayfinder 3____________Groval Thurson________very curved scimitar
melee tactics toolbox_____sword chart___________hook handle
inner sea combat________Calistrian Kiss_______scimitar
rival guide_____________derrak stoneskull_____two-handed kopesh
ultimate equipment______weapon description____bent scimitar

Here is a compilation of every confirmed ECB picture.

I suppose I should mention. My point of all this is I'm trying to make art for one of my characters, and figuring out how the sword should look. What I'm gathering is that there's really not a consensus on them.

The description of the elven curved blade is basically the same as a nodachi. If you want a visual just google "elf with nodachi".

...or Elf with nagamaki.

That is my thought too. The Elven curved blade is one of my favorite weapons and I've always pictured it looking like a nodachi.

At least someone found references this time. Last time I checked there were elven blades and there were curved blades, but the only blades that were both elven and curved were Drizzt's scimitars or Sheltiel's scimitar.

The Elven Curved Blade is just a generic port of the 3.5 Elven Courtblade from Races of the Wild (pg 164). I tried to find the image but my Google-fu is weak tonight.

this was the artwork for the 3.5 prestige class Champion of Corellon Larethian, a class that specialized in using the courtblade in that it got dex to damage with it. Though the depiction of the weapon elsewhere in the book was not as straight (and frankly fat)

Found it, hope the link works.

In my mind, the Elven Curve Blade is basically the same as the High Elf Greatswords from LOTR:

It's what makes the most sense to me based on the description and stats in the book.

Now, with more links!

The Elven Battle Training, Elven Battle Style, Elven Battle Focus line of feats will let you get 1.5 Int when two-handing traditional elven melee weapons.

I almost imagine it like the Naya Hushblade's weapon from Magic the Gathering. It's even an Elf Rogue creature two handing the weapon.
