Link to Marius' Character Sheet Could make some modifications, but here's the basic idea.
Godfrey Leitner |
Ok, I've finished up my backstory and other items. I've included a section describing Godfrey's ties to the objects that give him his implement powers. Also, I'd like to expand on his motivation/suspicions (e.g. the shadowy cult-like stuff he might have seen while acting as a detective), but I'm not sure what would be appropriate from your perspective. :) We can discuss that if I'm chosen, perhaps? I've copied everything below for convenience.
Edit: Wanted to add that I have a little bit of mundane gear left to add to my profile, but I have it down on my personal character sheet. It's just late here and I don't have the energy right this moment. :)
There's something rotten growing in his city. Everything that Godfrey Leitner has seen and felt the past months has left him certain of it. But there's also little doubt that he'll be unable to pursue his hunch. There are petty thefts, stabbings, and shootings that all merit investigation, according to his superiors. But it's damned odd that the missing persons, unusual rumors of skulking horrors in darkened alleys, and the whisperings of devil pacts or worse don't merit anything either. All of it disregarded as hearsay, never mind that their finest investigator feels there's substance. So Godfrey clenches his jaw and goes about his work, but he's at a snapping point, and he may well resign his commission if he can just find something more solid to base his suspicions on.
Godfrey Leitner is a long standing member of the Absalom Guard and has a reputation as a skilled investigator. He's effectively a native to the city, though he was technically born in the port city of Westcrown in Cheliax. He doesn't consider himself a citizen of that nation, and only blood ties him to its shores. His mother and father, Aspexia and Izkrael Leitner respectively, lived most of their lives on that shore. They survived the chaos of civil war and eked out a living until the birth of their son, and growing worries at the diabolical influence in the country, prompted them to flee. His mother was a native Cheliaxian, the daughter of a merchant, who grew to love his elven father whose own parents studied in the Arcane university there. They fled from the city and made a new life in Absalom, with his father taking up his own magical studies again.
Godfrey was pushed from a young age to master magic as his father's family always had. He was a precocious child, and he had mastered a handful of cantrips by the time he was fourteen, but then his progress halted and after a time backslid. Frustrated, and assuming that his son wasn't applying himself, his father pushed harder and harder at the youth, but no matter how much he time he spent tutoring or berating his son, the boy did not grow stronger in the magical arts. Finally giving up, after having destroyed what was once a loving relationship, his father left his son to his own devices while he focused on his work. He hired a tutor, a elderly Abadaran priest, and hoped that his son would make some other life for himself.
It was then, when he was no longer pressured by his father, that Godfrey's potential would finally assert itself. When studying the teachings of Abadar with his tutor, Eudonius, Godfrey fell into a trance-like state. With his hand on the copy of The Order of Numbers, he felt a pulsing sensation that seemed to emanate from the book. Though he would later swear he had moved his hand, he 'pulled' at the book with his mind and suddenly found himself focused and empowered. With another moment's focus, he was able to start to discerning the magical auras in the room, as he had before. Ecstatic, he explained his revelation to his tutor, who indulgently allowed his pupil to keep the tome that he might further explore this newfound revelation.
Over the following years, as he continued to study with Eudonius, Godfrey would unlock his magical potential, though it always required his copy of The Order of Numbers. Under Eudonius' wise hand, he learned the laws of the city, of religion, magic, and nature. He also learned to fight, at Eudonius' urging, as a form of exercise and as a form of self-defense training. On his own time, he explored his hard-won powers, though he kept them secret from his father, remembering his harsh treatment at his hands before. By the time he had reached the age of majority, he had become remarkably proficient at using the tome as a focus for his unique powers.
With little else to do, and not wishing to formally pursue a magical education, Godfrey devoted himself to upholding the law as Abadar (whom he had grown to greatly respect) had commanded. His father greatly disapproved of his entry into the Guard, but his opinion had long since lost its potency with his son. Over the years, Godfrey would continue to refine his power, learning of its nature through his own perseverance. The unique history of the Abadaran holy book, it was a venerable tome which had been passed down through the hands of generations of clerics, gave Godfrey a means of focus that he had previously lacked. He continued to seek out unique items that seemed to draw him to them, and he has amassed an impressive collection.
In recent years, Godfrey has begun to serve as a uniquely skilled investigator and detective. His unique magics and encyclopedic knowledge have led him to take increasingly difficult cases. Of late, he has found that seemingly simple disappearances and crimes have a more sinister undertone. Though he has not been able to prove it, he believes he has found traces of a cult that is abducting people. To what end, he has not been able to determine. Added to the rumors he's been hearing in the city, he has grown worried that there is danger for his city lurking in the shadows. His superiors think that he's chasing a conspiracy, and have not given him leave to pursue the matter further. Frustrated, he grows increasingly restless in his position and soon, he may well leave the guard to seek the truths to be found in the shadows himself.
Godfrey Leitner comes from a long line of robust Chelaxian stock, and it seems that it is this side that he primarily takes after. He is tall, at just over six feet in height, with a robust, strong build that belies his elven heritage. He is a handsome man, with long, thick black hair, a fairly pale complexion, and dark blue eyes. He has acquired a fighting man's scars from his time in the guard, with a few from some early mishaps with his magical experimentation. He typically dresses in a guard's uniform, but prefers simple, quality attire when he is off duty. He carries a number of items on his person at all times, all of which act as focuses for his magical powers. The odd mix-match of items seems unusual to many who meet him, but he doesn't give much credence to such trivialities.
That Godfrey has but a handful of friends should speak to his gruff and uncompromising nature. Brilliant, but prone to be stubborn and set in his own ways, Godrey fails to see why he should bend on matters that he has decided. In the face of reason, evidence, and patience, he is willing to rethink his own positions, but few are willing to go so far. He is devoted to the protection of his fellow citizens, though he cynically views most of them as self-involved at best, dangerously deluded idiots and criminals at worst. The lack of support and the wariness he's experienced his entire life as a half-elf and guard have left him few other views to hold.
He has a strong keen sense of duty that at times irks those who know him. His belief in Abadar, and his time in the guard, have left him with a strong respect for the rule of law. His service in the Guard has been marked by many instances of heroism, and his desire to protect the city and its people is unflagging.
He is still close friends with his tutor Eudonius, who is more of a father figure then his own father. His mother passed some seven years ago, and he still mourns her loss. They were close in his youth, and he misses her caring warmth and jovial manner. He rarely deigns to meet with his father, though the furious anger of his youth has simmered down to a cold dislike. Secretly, he is bitter that his increasing mastery of a form of magic that at times befuddles his father has not earned him greater respect. He would not freely admit it, nor even to himself, but he yearns for his father's approval.
I thought it would be interesting to specify what Godfrey's items of power are and to give a little bit of information about how he acquired them. Technically I only need 3 (one for each implement), but I've also added others that make sense for Mental Focus Powers.
The Order of Numbers [Divination: Implement] - This gold-inlaid, leather-bound tome was gifted to Godfrey by Eudonious. It has been passed down from cleric of Abadar to cleric of Abadar for tens, if not hundreds, of years. In its time, it has been present for the curing of kings, slaying of undead, quelling of riots and healing of the sick. It has seen a great deal of history and it's past speaks to Godfrey.
alchemical goggles [Divination: Danger Sight] - These goggles were confiscated from a notorious drug dealer and chemist who Godfrey helped to apprehend. The man, ratfolk in actually, had given the authorities the slip time and time again. When he was finally cornered, he managed to slip into the sewers and lead the guard on a lengthy chase before Godfrey and his Dwarven parter, Stigmar, were able to catch him. Godfrey instantly felt a connection to the goggles on taking them from the ratfolk and has carried them ever since.
Redemption [Transmutation: Implement] - This magical greatsword was confiscated from a murderer-for-hire who made a point of targeting the Guard when he could. With no next of kin and no will that could be found, it was given to Godfrey after he was last promoted. The blade glows faintly, though the color of its glow is difficult to pin down. Godfrey gave the blade its new name after he was given it, and it has served him well since.
Quick-Runner's Shirt [Transmutation: Quickness and Sudden Speed] - Godfrey bought this shirt after having been drawn in to the shop that had it from the street. The shirt, a thin silken thing intended for an athlete, has proven remarkably helpful when Godfrey has had to pursue fleeing criminals on foot.
golden holy symbol of Abadar [Abjuration: Implement] - This holy symbol was gifted to Godfrey by his tutor and father figure, Eudonius, after he joined the guard. Godfrey carried it for years before he unlocked its potential. Beset by a trio of thugs, he tripped and found himself flat on his back and at their mercy. In a burst of desperation, he was able to turn the thug's blades away, holy symbol blazing brightly as he did so. He has since been able to spend time mastering this power, and can protect himself with a shield that saps his foe's swings of power.

Psst, Godfrey.
I have no idea if you've read up on other people's characters or not, but my character, Ajit, was initially raised to be a cult's test subject. While he's turned to a band of thieves for company, and you are a (possibly ex-)city guard, our characters seem to have similar goals. Godfrey wishes to prove the existence of a cult that may or may not be abducting people, and Ajit was the victim of a cult that was once doing just that. I can see them working together to learn of/take down this sinister, shadowy cult. It should be mentioned, however, that even though Ajit was forced to be this cult's test subject, he doesn't know much about their motives and goals. He was simply experimented on by these awful folks and now wants to know why.
Just thought that mentioning this might lead to some interesting character interactions.
Cheers!
Edit: Oh my god, these characters would have the best personality combination ever. One is a stubborn, cynical man of logic, and the other is quite literally a monkey who is far too trusting of others, curious, nonsensical, and kleptomaniacal.

Definitely could be interesting. :) If we're both selected it could make some good sense to add a point of contact between our characters. We'd probably want to hash some of that out with GM Spooky though.

On the other hand, if we are still on: Man, I want to see Lyj and Ajit interact as well. Ajit would drive Lyj nuts, but he would freakin' have to see how he ticked. Heck, I would wonder if Ajit was a result of some of the forbidden knowledge being stolen from the Library.
