Alagoran’s Gem [open recuitement]

Recruitment

Many years ago, a merchant named Alagoran lived in the local village of Roderic's Cove. Thanks to his shrewd mind, he became filthy rich through many business deals with distant races; some were simply good deals, others more questionable. As time went on, he began to grow increasingly suspicious of others, worried they would steal his wealth. After a break-in whilst away resulted in the loss of thousands of gold worth of treasure, Alagoran decided it was best for him to keep his wealth upon his person, where he could always keep an eye on it. He searched far and wide for an investment which could be safely carried with him, wherever he may go, and one day, at the entrance to an old cave system not far from his home, he met a strange dwarf. The dwarf brought forth a gemstone to trade for the man's silver, gold, and platinum. After having the huge gemstone carefully inspected and appraised, Alagoran agreed to the trade, naming the gem "Alagoran’s Gem".

Rumors quickly spread of Alagoran and his rare gem, bringing scoundrels and treasure-hunters from all corners of Golarion to watch the merchant and his stone, and worse. Alagoran quickly realized he had to do something about it, and sold his mansion in town, intent on getting away for good. Using the money to hire the best masons and trapsmiths in the land, Alagoran located the small cave entrance where he had met the dwarf years before and began work building a vast dungeon. The structure would be an impenetrable vault and every nook and cranny would be filled with traps to protect his wealth. After years of living amid the construction, the dungeon was complete. Finally Alagoran would be left alone.

--------------------------------------------

Here it was that Alagoran lived for many more decades, continuing to amass his riches from his existing trading agreements. A single local merchant made the journey to the dungeon once per month to drop off food and packages, meeting Alagoran outside. No one knows exactly how Alagoran died, but one day he stopped showing up for his monthly meetings, never to be seen or heard from again. Within the year, there were rumors of the vast treasure within Alagoran’s Dungeon and the rare gem which must be hidden deep within.

I’m looking for 4-6 players interested in a classic style dungeon crawl. By classic style I mean Gygax-ian first edition dungeon crawl. To better understand what I'm talking about, please read this.

  • About Me:

I've been playing some variety of paper and pencil, face to face, RPG since the early 90's. Since about 2000, I have primarily been the GM for our weekly game. Unfortunately, life has grown complicated as gaming groups get older and our regular weekly games have become monthly games, then as schedules get crowded we wind up skipping months. Our last session was almost 8 months ago. So I've started playing PbP games here. Now it is time to share the wealth and pass on the good favor I have received, and start GMing. This is my first PbP GMing experience. I have a homebrew sandbox campaign I'd like to run, but I'm going to run a few modules first to get the kinks out.

Name: Enkidu Marelegs of the Shriikirri-Quah
    Race: Male Shoanti Human
    Alignment: CG
    Class: Oracle (Dual Cursed)
    Mystery: Nature
Backstory: Born into the animal-wise Shriikirri-Quah, Enkidu was given the derogatory name 'Marelegs' for his stunted legs, so weak that he could hold himself atop no horse. When he came of age he was informed that he had been chosen by a druid to act as herald to one of the nobles of the plains, the great and wise Shakka of the Glen. The two were bonded in the manner traditional for their people, and Enkidu follows his lord as he moves through the world, seeking to find out one day why he was chosen for this honor, or else earn it himself.

And his master, who blesses him with permission to ride upon him when travelling,

    Name: Shakka of the Glen
    Race: Male Horse (Totem Guide)
    Alignment: CG
    Class: Animal Companion
Backstory: An enigmatic and old horse, Shakka has bonded with Enkidu and seeks to venture into the world and see more of it. He is driven by reasons and causes known to few.

Sample post The pair stand at the rear of the group; Enkidu to the side of his mount's head, the horse's eyes trained on the complaining townsman. After a minute, the horse turns and mumbles a few grunts and horse-noises into Enkidu's ear, as he nods and steps forward. "My lord Shakka believes that he has some knowledge that may aid in this..." Sheet

Think I'll try an unchained rogue. Sounds like a good place for one.

    Background:
This is Tippy (Tipwell 'Tippy' Rogers), a halfling scoundrel who is a con artist and second story man. He leverages the fact that he looks like a human kid for all it is worth.

Tippy grew up on the streets, having to fare for himself. He found that begging worked fairly well, if enhanced by fast fingers. Over time as he aged, he began to leverage his size and appearance to be able to keep begging as a human child. This was enough to live on, but Tippy wanted more. He worked on other skills. He mastered a rapier, and traps, thinking it would get him invited on one of those fabled adventures. Eventually this did work, and he worked his way in that trade. He looted some tombs and followed the classic path of 'kill the goblins and take their stuff'. Over time he came to the conclusion that it was a bit more dangerous that he liked for the return, so he began to look for a better return. Then he heard of this gem- Alagoran's gem. Surely that would be the score of a lifetime and would set him up on easy street.

He has travelled to Roderic's cove in search of a team to join to approach the mission. He's simply not foolish enough to try such a task solo.

    Sample Post:
As the town guard is out looking for his party, Tippy plays his part. Standing in front of the ally in which the rest hide, he bluffs the guards "No good sirs, I've not see any such bad men. My mommy told me to keep away from bad men like that. I would go home right away if I saw men like that. "

    Interested, what about occult classes?
I want to test drive a Kineticist.

Interested in playing a Changling Witch again. Will have the fluff and crunch up by tomorrow.

Occult classes are fine. I'd also like to see how one plays.

I play a water Kineticist in PFS.

they are fun, but after a bit your will be thinking you are playing Avatar the last air bender.

Going to throw my hand in for a classic warrior type, though debating between fighter, ranger, and barbarian. Probably go straight human.

Think I'll submit an Occultist who wants to study the artifacts Alagoran has accrued over the years. Character sheet and full bio coming later.

Will Variant Multiclassing be available for use?

I'll say yes. You won't get much from it at this level, but it can add some depth to a character concept.

To everyone else, here's the list I have so far, please let me know if I've missed anything or anyone.

  • Enkidu, Male CG Human dual-cursed Oracle of Nature
  • Tippy, Male TN Halfling uRogue

I'll look over your submissions and give commentary if applicable in the next 24 hours.

The following people have expressed interest:

  • Corsario, Kineticist
  • Dalgar the Great, Changling Witch
  • Tara Ravenheart, Human warrior
  • Arachnofiend, Occultist
  • Alistus
  • zomblisham

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

  • I have an idea but was on the fence about applying as I am in several games and I wanted to be sure any new-commers had a chance.

My idea involved partnering with Tippy.

    a dread gnome ninja

Excellent, I'll be applying with a Hunter with variant multi class in barbarian. I'll have the crunch and backstory up tomorrow. I have a few variations of this character spread across various aliases if you want to check them out under this profile, but I've only actually played the character once for a one-shot mythic campaign.

Submitting my application as Davro Iramelis, level 4 Hunter with Variant Multiclass Barbarian. The following is a rough stat block of Davro, I still have a few hundred gold to spend and haven't decided entirely on the feat choice. Davro's trusty sidekick Doraga the badger is also not included, as I have a question pertaining to the use of the Automatic Bonus Progression ruleset. Will animal companions/familiars also be following the chart? In my previous iterations of this character I spent almost half of the allotted gold on Doraga as he was very important to not only the crunch of this character, but also the background(Which I'll have up tomorrow). I'm just hoping his AC and Con won't lag behind without magic to boost them.

    Poorly Organized Stat Block:

    Davro Iramelis
    Male Half-orc Hunter 4
    N medium humanoid
    Init +1 Senses Darkvision (60) Perception +9
    DEFENSE
    AC 16, touch 11, flat-footed 15
    hp 39
    Fort 8 Reflex 6 Will 4
    OFFENSE
    Speed 30 ft
    Melee +1 Falchion +7 (2d4+10/18-20/x2) or Bite +7 (1d4+4/x2) or Bite +2 (1d4+2/x2)
    Space 5 Reach 5
    STATISTICS
    STR 18 DEX 12 CON 16 INT 8 WIS 14 CHA 13
    BAB 3 CMB 7 CMD 18
    Feats Power Attack, Amplified Rage
    Skills Acrobatics 0, Appraise -1, Bluff 1, Climb 10, Diplomacy 1, Disguise 1, Escape Artist 0, Fly 0, Handle Animal 9, Heal 7, Intimidate 1, Knowledge (geography) 6, Knowledge (nature) 4, Perception 9, Ride 1, Sense Motive 2, Stealth 0, Survival 9, Swim 10
    Languages Orc, Common
Gear +1 Falchion, +1 Chain Shirt, Kit - Dungeoneering - deluxe, Key - Skeleton, Handy Haversack

Ok, after a bit of research, here's the solution I'll be going with:

If your class has a permanent companion such as an Eidolon or Animal Companion, you can choose to transfer any of your bonuses individually to your companion. (For example, if you're level 7 you could give your companion +2 strength and +1 resistance bonus, and keep +1 resistance bonus and the full amount of all other bonuses for yourself.) If you have a bonus that could be split normally (for example +2 Resistance), you may split that bonus between you and your companion. Odd bonuses would split to two even bonuses (for example, a +3 bonus would split to two +2 bonuses instead of a +2 and a +1).

    Grand Lodge

    Sweet, that'll save some bother.

Sounds like a good fix, Ill keep that in mind. I've finished the background for Davro, which I'll leave in a spoiler below.

    Background:

Davro was abandoned in the forest at a very young age, he never knew his parents and could barely fend for himself in the wild. One day Davro came upon a young badger foraging for food, the two helped eachother and soon became close friends. They traveled the land foraging and hunting for survival, and eventually worked up the courage to visit a small village. The villagers were amazed by the rare meats and pelts they had, trading top of the line equipment and goods. The two soon became local legends, hunting rare beasts for their furs and meats. Years later Davro seemed to have hunted and slain every type of rare creature imaginable, he longed for a creature worthy enough give him a true hunt. His travels lead him to the small village of Roderic's Cove, where he began hearing rumors of an elusive man in the possession of an even more elusive gem. Jewels meant nothing to Davro, but this would be a hunt worthy of his skill.

I apologize for my poor writing skills

Hmmm, my human ranger fills pretty much the exact same role as Alistus' half-orc hunter, so I am going to bow out. Best of luck all.

Sorry this took so long, we have three characters submitted and four others with expressed interest. Hopefully we'll pick up a few more players who are interested in a classic dungeon crawl.

I do have one comment for Enkidu: This will be a dungeon crawl, you will find it difficult to do a lot of riding. I know it seems fairly integral to the character, but I'm not certain how well it will work in play. I won't say it can't work, but it might cause some issues.

Tara, you're welcome to make your submission anyway with more than four openings there is room for overlapping roles.

Ok, so we are now six hours away from closing this recuitement and still only have three submissions. I may have to call this on lack of interest and try again some other time.

So, six (6) hours remaining to get in any last minute character submissions!

    Liberty's Edge

I won't finish in time, I will have to bow out. Good luck everyone.

I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe one week was too short. If we don't have enough submissions, I may wait a little bit and repost the recruitment with a longer timeframe. If I do, I will PM everyone who has expressed interest.

And midnight. Recuitement is now closed.

I'll give those of you who expressed interest the rest of the weekend to post a finished character, otherwise we'll just have to close this one and try again later.
