THIS IS AN INTEREST CHECK. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT CHARACTERS! A SEPARATE RECRUITMENT THREAD WILL FOLLOW IF ENOUGH PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED.
The mission is simple; descend into the Abyss, steal the wand of Orcus, and return it to the Seven Heavens for destruction. Easy-peasy, right?
Right...
This will be a very high-level adventure for six characters of 20th level with Tier 1 mythic abilities. The setting is the Forgotten Realms, but we will be using the Pathfinder rules (much of the action takes place in the Outer Planes, anyway).
Make no mistake; this adventure is deadly! There will be character deaths and your odds of success are slim (though it is not impossible). The original adventure was a 1st edition affair written for character levels 18-100! I will pull no punches and the rules will be strictly applied.
With that in mind, are there any interested parties?

The idea is of interest peaking quality and I've not set foot in the realms of forgotten in some time. Would the general concept be that we progress in power by gaining wealth and mythic tiers or would we transcend the 20th-Level threshold as well?

Okay, I am planning on doing a little bit of 3.5 conversions simply because some of the required critters don't exist in PF. Beyond what must be converted, I'll be using standard PF rules.
I'd rather not use 3rd party stuff simply because I don't have access to a lot of it (aside from PFSRD). By necessity, there will be a few 3PP things (because the Tome of Horrors has statted out several of the critters that Paizo has not).
By the nature of the adventure, there will not be a lot of progression (this is a single module), though I might have the characters go up in mythic tiers a little bit.

Would you be ok with psionics?
I imagine that creating something like a Psion Nomad who is constantly shifting around and is movement personified would be fun :)
Or go into the Psion Uncarnate prestige class and become a being of pure thought alone would be really cool :)
Actually I should just be looking at some of the prestige classes in general and see what capstone abilities I can find there :)
You say that we are returning to the Seven Heavens to have this thing destroyed, are we originally angels or something? A group of epic leveled heroes would be odd in itself, but if we are all angels or something it would make a lot more sense :)

Any alignment restrictions? Are the powers that chose this quest picky about not taking anyone evil? I have several concepts floating around my head for an NE or maybe even LE character who got 'an offer he couldnt refuse' from the upper planes and is now on a (probabley doomed) mission to upset the cosmic balance of power. Loyal to the party, loyal to the cause, just different motivations.

Decided I didn't feel like fiddling with a Kineticist. Tossing around ideas for someone who's hard to keep dead, either a Monk of the Four Winds or a Clone Master Alchemist. Leaning towards the latter.
Did we just decide we felt like getting the Wand of Orcus, or is there some larger reason we want to destroy it, or did someone give us the mission, etc.?

Paladins get pretty damn sweet at 20th. Swift action Maximized Lay on Hands? Noice.
With Fey Foundling and Greater Mercy you're healing 88 damage a pop. Make that a whopping 104 per if Bracers of the Avenging Knight boost the LoH beyond 20th.
You're basically unstoppable unless something kills you in one round. And even then, Hero's Defiance can deliver that 88-104 as an immediate.
Of course by the description...you're gonna NEED that kind of durability in one form or another, be it super healing, massive DR ala a Barbarian, or just plain being able to pop back to life.

Dude, a hundred damage is peanuts at level 20.

For enemies? Most enemies barely deal that much on a full attack, as far as CR 20 creatures go. A Void Yai rocks about the highest per swing and still only reaches 4 attacks at 3d8+43 apiece. Assuming everything hits (a big if as a Paladin, considering its last two attacks are at a measly +23 and +18) that's still only around 200 damage. Drop 40 because DR 10/Evil but we'll assume that doesn't apply to most other enemies.
Most things, even of higher CRs, don't hit for much more.
Being able to halve or entirely negate a full attack nearly at-will if you're smart and pumped Cha is nothing to sneeze at. You can laugh at a Balor, since its damage is pitiful and its spells will probably ricochet off your gleaming perfect Paladin teeth.
I imagine we're going to be running into Balors as mooks and highly customized foes as bosses but stopping the mooks from leaving you weakened for the important fights is pretty darn important.

The bad guys need to be pretty customized as npcs in order to make it a challenge for high level pcs like this.
Stock monsters out of the book will really just melt in the face of what those characters can do.
Or there have to be so many of the enemy that it just becomes ridiculous. A fight between the hypothetical paladin and a twenty horned devils could be fun in theory as they wear him down, but it's not very practical.
WhtKnt |
There is a little of both. There are places where there are insane numbers of bad guys, and some NPCs that have been highly customized. I've made several changes and pumped it up a little to make it challenging to characters of that level.
In the old days, where a dragon capped at 88 hit points, yes, it could be a cakewalk, but under PF rules, they are a wee bit more challenging, and as I said, I've tweaked a few things as well. I should warn everyone that there are some "save of die" moments, which runs contrary to 3.5/PF standards, but as they really fit the flavor, I've modified them only slightly.
Okay, give me a few days and I will post a full set of rules for character generation and background. I'll link to the recruitment thread from here for convenience.

100th level in 2nd Edition are substantially different from 100th level characters in 3.5/Pathfinder.

Im just trying to wrap my head around a lvl 100 pathfinder character. Something like a fighter or barbarian you could feasibly extrapolate up to 100 (with something like 19 iterative attacks... think of the 2 weapon fighter!!!) but I am scratching my head on a wizard ^-^ would he just use the regular spells but with sky high DCs and unlimited castings?
Could be fun to try out anyways :)

Lv 100 was not the power boost in 1st edn that it is in PF or 3rd. Skills and effects tended to stop around 20th, except for magic who stopped spell use gain at 30. After 20 hp gain was a set number, and con no longer boosted it. Fighters got two attacks a round (unless you used the optional weapon specializing rules which made it 5/2 over two rounds (i think, it was a loooong time ago))
Magic users and clerics of course had no level cap on spells: we used to joke about water cooling your finger with magic missile (40+ at level 100), or 100d6 fireballs (no evasion btw)
fireball: 100d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 6, 1, 4, 6, 1, 2, 1, 1, 1, 3, 3, 2, 1, 5, 3, 1, 5, 4, 4, 4, 2, 6, 3, 2, 6, 6, 4, 1, 5, 4, 4, 5, 5, 3, 1, 3, 2, 2, 6, 4, 3, 3, 3, 4, 5, 1, 3, 6, 2, 6, 6, 5, 1, 1, 3, 6, 2, 3, 4, 6, 2, 3, 1, 5, 6, 4, 5, 3, 4, 2, 2, 6, 3, 1, 3, 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 3, 5, 1, 3, 4, 4, 1, 1, 4, 2, 4, 3, 1, 6, 3, 5, 6, 4) = 338
magic missile: 44d4 + 44 ⇒ (3, 2, 3, 4, 3, 3, 3, 2, 1, 4, 1, 3, 4, 4, 2, 2, 1, 3, 1, 1, 3, 4, 1, 3, 3, 1, 2, 1, 3, 4, 1, 1, 1, 3, 3, 3, 1, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1, 4, 1) + 44 = 146
Eat that fire power
But a level 100 magic user had only 60hp more than a 30th, and level 1 to 20 was d4's, what ever you rolled, 1 to 4. A high con could give 2/lv more, so 170 on average, barring magic. 130hp sans con. Look at that hp score in relation to damage output.
It was fun though

I've never played higher than 15th level, but I'm a huge forgotten realms buff and I'm looking for one more pbp so I'd love to throw my hat in. Anyone got a list of characters so far? I'm thinking a drow ranger, who has turned away from evil and fled to the surface. He's spent a bit of time with a dwarf, halfling and a couple of humans, and he has a magical...tiger...in a wondrous figurine. Oh, and scimitars, he uses... 3 scimitars :P pretty original, right?
