Seoni: Element Master or Corruptor

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

So I'm leaning toward Element Master but am undecided. With Element Master's two powers I'd be getting +4 on every check I wanted, which is really nice. But beyond that combo most of the powers seem lackluster. There haven't (to my knowledge) been any cards printed so far that have the mastered trait, so the value of her damage absorption is unknown. I'm not too keen on her elemental powers either because I don't want be forced to add fire/cold/acid/electricity to a check if I want to get the +4.

The Corruptor role I'm lukewarm on as well. It seems that you would get a combination of powers to become an exploring machine, but I don't know how well that would play out in game since you're really burning through your deck to do something like that. Furthermore, as more cards become redeemed the value of most of her corrupted powers diminishes as well.

Xexyz: The mastered trait refers to whichever elemental feats you've taken: fire/cold/acid/electricity. If you've mastered Fire, you reduce Fire damage taken.

And you can master more than one...

However I am with you, Seoni seems really underpowered compared to my other WotR characters

Playing her through AD4-6 will be interesting

Ok, now I understand how this all works (I think). Bleh, that makes the role worse than I thought, since you'll need to get several power feats just for it to do anything.

But after 3 power feats (master fire, you may add 1 mastered trait to your check, add 4 to your check with a mastered trait), she's adding 4 to every check she makes. :D

We're going with Corruptor for the Seoni in our party; two feats in, converting all corrupted cards into the best blessing in the blessing discard pile seems really good. High odds of 2-dice blessings in a lot of situations, and things like Nethys/Deskari coming up makes you really happy (as a stream of Nethys explores lets you do things like fully loot a location of cards underneath the villain).

It also has the benefit of letting you effectively run these wild-card blessings (with an additional, if costly, option) in other card slots using the spare corrupt items (ghoulhide armor, etc.), turning undesirable items into great ones for you. Expanding the pool of 'great' boons for one character is really beneficial for the party, in the same way that Damiel was not only powerful, but upped the average item quality of other party members b/c he wasn't competing for any of the same cards.

And remember, you only have to redeem cards if you want to :). But anyway, a stack of Abraxas blessings and otherwise-undesirable cursed items is all you need to make good use of Corruptor (it's fine to redeem the actually-good corrupt items for their primary use).

As for WotR Seoni being underpowered in general, I think her spell-recursion power is where most of her strength lies. Being able to pull out a Life Drain for an easy fight, a Create Spiked Pit for an annoying monster with auto-damage, and a Dismissal for outsiders is *really* good.

Yeah, mid-AD5 (assuming normal feat rate, which may or may not be safe), Element Master goes from really mediocre (small elemental resistance, recharge mastered-element-non-attack-spells if you don't want it in your discard to recur) to really solid (a Lini/Heggal-like universal boost).

How do people feel about how soon you need to get a role's payoff for it to be worth the wait along the way? I'm generally fine with roles that need a 2nd power feat to 'get there' (as that's less than one AD to wait), but things that only come into play mid-AD5 (or worse, AD-6) just remind me of trying to play Diablo 2 with a crippled character to try to save skill points for later. Which is to say: it's definitely less fun.

Now, it would be *awesome* if there were an AP (or OP season, or homebrew AP balanced around this) that gave you your roles earlier than usual, for greater customization through more of the game.

Well, even without other power feats, each time you choose a mastered type you get:

1. Discard a card to draw a card with that trait from your discard pile.
2. Automatically recharge spells(/items) with that trait.
3. When you acquire a card with that trait, draw a card.
4. Reduce damage of that type by 2.

That seems like about the right return for 1 power feat - taking the other power feats just adds more synergy.

You already can recharge attack spells, etc.

It's a very small power at first.

As you say the more feats you put in the more it pays off. So it will be interesting to see what I think of her during the next three adventure packs.

1. I have a question regarding "Create Spiked Pit". Can you really pull it out like this? Seoni's ability must be used "before your combat check", but if you want to evade a monster then there will be no combat check. Thus it seems to me that Seoni cannot use her ability to pull the "Create Spiked Pit" from her discard to evade. Do you agree?

2. Also, I think that if Corruptor Seoni uses a Corrupted card to copy the top card of the blessing deck, that card cannot be recharged, because the cards do not match. Is this correct?

Thank you in advance for your replies. I'm playing Seoni myself and soon I will have to choose a role, but I am still undecided.

Right. Create Spiked Pit's evasion power has to be played during the "Apply any evasion effects" step. And that is before Seoni can use her swap power. At least, that is how I'd play it.

Right again. Seoni's power lets her treat a card like it has that blessing's powers, but she doesn't change which card she has in hand. Just imagine as if the powers text on her card was replaced with the powers text on the blessing. That doesn't make them the same card, just two different cards that do the exact same thing.

1. Your interpretation is correct, you can only use the power after you determine you're attempting a Combat check, which is far after evasion happens (and is even after Before You Act powers trigger). In my interpretation, "before your combat check" means that you can activate the power in your choice of "Determine Which Skill You're Using", "Determine the Difficulty", and "Play Cards and Use Powers That Affect Your Check" as all of these are steps of a check before you actually attempt the roll itself. Limiting it to any particular step would limit what types of cards Seoni could pull with the power, which does not (to me) seem like the intent.

2. Correct, you are only copying the powers of the top card of the blessings deck, not the name. Basically treat Corrupted cards in your hand exactly as you would Blessing of the Gods in previous sets for the purposes of power-copying.

I'm thinking that when I eventually play through with Seoni, I'll want to go Corruptor (and have Fallen Areshalae in the same party) just for the flavor of two relatively evil-ish characters fighting alongside the paladin and cleric to stop a plot to destroy everything. I can definitely imagine the Blessings of Nocticula coming in handy for Seoni.

Thank you all for clarifying this for me!

I need to clarify one more thing about Corruptor Seoni, please. Let's say I checked this power feat:

"You may treat a card in your hand that has the Corrupted trait as if it has the same powers as the top card in the blessings discard pile. This counts as playing a blessing."

Now let's say that I want to play the unredeemed Black Robe as a blessing. The Black Robe says that you have to bury a random card from your discard pile when you play it. But do I have to do it if I play it as a blessing? Or I should ignore the original powers on the corrupted card when I play it as a blessing? In other words the powers from the copied blessing replace the original powers or they are in addition to them?

It replaces the powers, nothing on the original card applies. On the flip side, if the top card of the blessings discard requires you to discard a card to play it (a la Blessing of Shax), you'd need to discard a card due to that power.
