Only Using the PRD this year?

RPG Superstar™ General Discussion

I'm not sure if this is a different rule this year, or if I just don't recall it from previous years. So if I wanted to use a spell from Inner Sea Magic as a requirement to create my magic item, would I be up for disqualification?

If you can find it on the PRD, it's fair game and I think if it's in a publicly released official Paizo product (i.e. not someone elses product, not beta product, nor playtest product) it is also fair game, so I think you would be fine.

I am sure one of the moderators will tell us if I'm wrong :)

Just be careful not to reveal things too specific about what you intend to use or reference as that way runs the risk of identifying your item and getting DQ'd.

It's at the end of the first paragraph of the Open Call Rules.

The rules specifically says PRD, so I would NOT use something not from that source (even if it's Paizo). This makes me sad as it means no Occult Adventures material.

The rules also exclude anything from the Tech Guide.

Yeah, I was sad about that tech guide exclusion.

My bazooka of goblin launching will have to wait for another year :P

If I get a spare half hour, I'll make it up as an example entry and post to the forums - I can't promise a quick turn around as I am working on my actual entry at the momemt.

Paizo PRD

While it's safe to assume people generally know where the PRD is... I thought I might supply it for any who don't know/have it, to avoid silly disqualifications.

I am looking forward to seeing the number of disqualifications this year due to people not reading the rules (as always)...

I was in the same boat as you Chris, which is why I asked. I often take a look at new spells for inspiration and I was reading a book that is not in the PRD when I read that line in the rules.

I imagine there will be a lot less of that this year. There are several of the '8 times' entrants who have not posted since April. They may miss it altogether because they haven't read or even seen the rules. Those who have noticed the biggest twist, have probably already seen the rules.

I really hope RPGSS Season 9 leads Friday's letter.

I honestly feel that it should have its rightful place next to Sean's advice :-)

No you didn't, write something for the next Wayfinder that uses it as part of the submission! And then, there is always unleashing it on unsuspecting players :p

Since it was brought up earlier in this thread....

Liz Courts just weighed in saying that yes, spells/etc also need to be in the PRD. So, no using non-PRD spells, even if they are from an official Paizo product.

Scarab Sages Developer

While you can be inspired by anything, no don't use any game mechanics that aren't in the PRD.

To be clear, Golarion lore is fine. It's only rules we're restricting to the PRD.

Frankly, items that used obscure non-PRD subsystems without book cites are a pretty significant trap when it comes to voters who will have no idea what you mean. I saw a fair number of those last year.

It's not just a trap for RPGSS. It's a trap for published sourcebooks as well. I recall several months ago I purchased a supplement which made an off-hand reference to 'cards' without further explanation. I had to ask the author what it meant on the forums. The supplement in question was written by some 'Mark Seifter' guy:)

Point being, if you are writing or publishing an RPG supplement, you can't always assume your audience knows every subsystem out there. If you are entering RPGSS, you are practicing to be an RPG writer, so you also can't assume your audience knows every subsystem out there.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16 , Marathon Voter Season 8, Dedicated Voter Season 9 aka dien

I think 'subsystems' is a completely valid thing-- and it's how I was originally reading the restriction, that it was designed to reduce reliance on unusual/obscure subsystems.

It's just that this decision also takes a lot of spells out of the running that have no such 'subsystems'. My question used in the other thread, for example purposes, was Burst of Radiance. It's a spell that introduces nothing new mechanically, just good ol' terms already in use, but since it's not on the PRD, I have a direct statement from Liz Courts saying not to use it, etc.

Fortunately for my sake, it wasn't a spell I was actually planning on using in my item. But I can see this rule catching a lot of people offguard, because as worded in the Open Call rules...

Open Call wrote:
"any rules not available"

Burst of Radiance does not use any such rules-- it introduces no new mechanics or conditions or types of saves, etc. Yet it's still an ineligible spell by the criteria laid out here on the boards/contest moderators.

I think it's a reasonable reading for someone to only read the Open Call rules, and come away from that thinking that Burst of Radiance/other-spells-in-that-non-PRD-space are legal design tools, and who have not seen this forum in order to realize that, no, it's not. So I hope that those people check the board, I guess, rather than making what I think is a reasonable and well-intended interpretation of the rules as given. *shrug*

Darn. New weapons or armours aimed at an Occult class, like the occultist, would have been cool. There's nothing in that book for them.

Eliminating non-PRD sources makes sense to prevent obscure stuff from being used and simplify the research required, but it's a shame to eliminate a book because it hasn't made it onto the website yet.

Scarab Sages Contributor , Star Voter Season 8

Shoot, I'm glad I saw this - I was about to reference a spell in a non-PRD Paizo source!

I wouldn't touch on its mechanics, but still...whew.
