The AOE thing hasn't worked like that for years.
Either you were flagged for PVP already or you targeted the PVP player before your triggered the skill.
It's possible that the Republic players telling me to disable my AoEs had no idea what they were talking about (which would hardly surprise me, there are still EQ players who believe that mobs won't spawn if you stand too close to their spawn point!), and the people running into fights to get flagged were hoping to get tag-targeted and shot or something. (Which the way I tab-target and shoot without looking, would work well on me. It's even worse in FFXIV, where tab-target *always* picks the targets farthest away or even behind you, and not the target punching you in the face...)
I don't do open world PVP (although I enjoy the PVP scenarios, except for Hutball, which I loathe...), so I'm not really up on how it works. But wannabe PVPers definitely charge into fights in the hopes of getting you flagged, so they can jump you. Happens all the time.
I find on the Hawk that the biggest problem is during Gree week because one mission almost requires you to go muck around in the OWPVP are on Illum. The biggest thing I see on my server (the Hawk) is Imps using the play dead emote in the Rakghoul tunnels during that event. I've seen a few lone PVPers try to pick a fight with my guild's op group when we were World Boss or Base Commander hunting.
But as a DPS I learned really early on to have auto-targeting off after the first time I accidentally pulled the next group in a FP.
But I constantly have to teach newbie Sharpshooters that, when you rip aggro, it's murder to run. Pop a DCD, DPS on, and dump aggro AFTER the tank taunts.

Yup, Gree week on Illum, that's the stuff. Because you end up running it with both Imperial and Republic characters to grind faction, you see the surreal differences between the two sides. Help one side kill their mob (mainly to get it over with and out of your way) and you get thanks, and then they stick around to help you with your mob(s). Help the other side kill their mob and get told 'You know you don't get anything for this.' and 'I didn't need your help.' as if their first conclusion is that you are trying to 'steal' their kill (which isn't generally an option anyway, and people should know by 50th level!).
Love that Gree armor though, all shiny and Tron!
MMOs pretty epitomize the old line 'hell is other people,' since it seems like 90% of what is annoying about those games is the jerks one runs into. I don't think that jerks gravitate to MMOs, over tabletop, just that it's harder to choose who you're playing with in an MMO, and you are gaming with several thousand other people, meaning that you are bound to run into more of 'that guy' than at the local gaming store or a convention. The number of people who will take time to explain some trick of your class, or how gear works, or even give you gear (that's probably junk to them, even if it's godlike to you!) is similarly increased, but, human nature being what it is, we remember the jerks who leave us angry or frustrated longer than the nice people who offer us helpful advice (they make armor out of silk for casters? what sorcery is this?) or give us stuff (a Skull of Jhentra *and* a Runed Totem Staff, both of which you probably got by accident running here, because mobs aggroed on you and your pet killed them? thanks!).
And now my guild has moved on from Final Fantasy XIV, so I'm probably going to be learning a new MMO, or going back to EQ2 or WoW or whatever they settle on, soon enough. It's less the game, and more the people.
Still kind of burned over City of Heroes/Villains being gone...

Chronicles of Elyria. Or at least the maelstrom of politics that is currently surrounding the guilds and nations.
They are all dancing to my strings...
(Well, not all of them. A significant portion. Okay. Two.)

Played WoW for a long time, my final bit was in a competitive raiding guild so I could see how good I was. Found out, gave them my 2 weeks notice (Yeah, I had a professional attitude about my personal performance.), spent my last raid night helping them defeat the big fire bird boss in Firelands. Great last night.
Since then, I moved in with my wife and do not have a computer to play. I played Destiny for a bit (does that count?) but I did not have a great way to organize groups. Their website was atrocious and after awhile I got tired of trying to fit into groups that disband after 2 failed tries at a raid boss. I constantly wonder why they couldn't use a guild system like any other successful MMO and allow people to group up like that. Wireless keyboards with USB connectors, USBs on the front of PS4s, *shrug*.
After that, I haven't bothered with any online games. Maybe after we move to a bigger house and I can get a computer.

Thanks for the info Krensky. If I get back into Destiny I'll have to check that website.
I'll have to check out FFXIV on the PS4 possibly. Right now my time is chewed up pretty good between work, house maintenance, and side projects for Pathfinder homebrew stuff.
Well the new expansion for Destiny is coming out next month, kicking off year three so that's a good time to consider gettingt back in the swing.
I forgot DC Universe Online is also on PS4.

I recently picked up the Marrowind expansion for ESO. I am impressed with how much the game has improved since launch. The quests in Marrowind feel impactful and meaningful.
If you have the expansion, new characters you create will start in Marrowind. Levels do not prevent grouping below trials (aka raids) as mobs are scaled to your level so you can go anywhere and group with anyone.
