Headhunter - Barbarian / Rogue Hybrid Class

Homebrew and House Rules

Here's an idea I came up with for a Hybrid class I thought I would share:

Headhunter Hybrid Class

Comments/Suggestions are appreciated.

I like the idea, but one question.

Why is it a 3/4 bab class?
Given the fact that one half is barbarian, and the sneak attack follows the slayer progression, I can't see it as anything but a full bab class.

Other than that, silent rage is awesome, and the improved stealth idea is a great one.

I did the 3/4 BAB because I didn't want it to be broken. After taking another look at the Slayer, I think you are right, the Full BAB would be better.

Here's a revised version:

Headhunter Hybrid Class - Revised

Amazing work. Seriously.

*dot*

I think the core chassis looks alright. I mean, it seems balanced and all. It would be sorta cool though if the headhunter techniques were reduced to a pre-made list of rage powers and rogue talents and you instead created some unique headhunter techniques. That's just a thought, though, to add a bit more originality to the class. Otherwise, great work and looks totally fun to play. I too am a fan of silent rage.

You can remove the last sentance of the second paragraph of Silent Rage. It's redundant. Also, I'm not sure that UMD fits into the class.

I agree that you should make some custom techniques

I agree about making a custom technique list; it is something I have been ruminating on. Just thought I'd throw the idea out there first.

I'm not sure if UMD fits either, that will require thought.

Thanks for the feedback. hope to have further revisions posted soon.

Okay, here's what I have come up with so far. The list of techniques is added to the bottom. Those marked in Bold and Italics are the original ones I've been thinking on (though some are similar to other existing powers/feats).

The list does look a bit long to me, so any suggestions on whittling it down would be appreciated. And let me know if anything looks a broken.

Headhunter Hybrid Class V3

I like the new talents you've made, and I think your selection of rogue and barbarian ones looks good as well. I don't necessarily think it needs whittling down. It's a good-sized but not bloated list. I really like the visuals of Greater Mantis Technique. This definitely adds some much-needed unique flavor to the class.

Was it intentional that Raging Sneaker stacks with Lesser Mantis Technique?

Oh, I was gonna say. Is it usual to give full class level as a bonus to skills? I'm thinking especially one as powerful as Stealth? I usually tend to see 1/2 level. If they are meant to stack, I definitely think that would be more appropriate. Could possibly add it to one or two other fitting skills too, like Bluff for feinting maybe or Acrobatics to get into flanking easier without provoking? I dunno. Just ideas.

The "Raging" rage powers do tend to add full class level to the skill checks.

I saw the "Raging" skills and thought one should be there for Stealth, but I didn't even register that I had two for Stealth.

On closer look "Raging Sneaker" should go, and instead put in "Raging Tumbler: When silent raging, the headhunter adds her level as an enhancement bonus on all Acrobatics skill checks made to move through a threatened space."

Bluff can't be used while raging, it's a Charisma-based skill. Do you think a technique that allows feinting while raging would be too much?

While I'm looking at it, maybe add Raging Flyer from the rage powers? And create "Raging Escape: When silent raging, the headhunter adds her level as an enhancement bonus on all Escape Artist skill checks"?

I think both Raging Tumbler and a Raging Feinter power that makes an exception to the "no Charisma skills" rage rule would both be cool and useful powers to have, along with Raging Sneaker. I'd rather suggest changing the first Mantis Technique to something else. Just my take, though.

You were right about the Lesser Mantis Technique. I just noticed a glaring hole in the idea, which I hope this fixes.

Headhunter v4

Just food for thought, yes there are rage powers that grant +level to the skill, but not all skills are equal. The barbarian can get it for Swim or Climb, but those aren't as good as skills like Use Magic Device or Perception. Gaining +level to Acrobatics would make tumbling really, really easy, but only granting the bonus to jumping puts it more in line with the Climb and Swim bonuses. For many skills, granting a bonus to a specific use of the skill - instead of the entire skill - makes +level easier to swallow.

As far as Stealth goes, I dunno. It can be a good or poor skill. Just depends on how the GM decides Stealth can be used, and the style of campaign. Personally I would recommend applying only 1/2 level, or some other perk such as subtracting your level from the penalty for sniping.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Raging Sneaker already was a 1/2 level bonus, but I think you are right about the Raging Tumbler, so I reduced it to 1/2 level as well.

As far as sniping bonuses, those are listed under the Rogue's Advanced talents. Like the Slayer and the Investigator, I wanted to leave the Advanced Talents exclusively to the Rogue.

Headhunter V5

Now the question is, How do I get Paizo to consider publishing it? LOL :P

I would very much like the Google doc of this homebrew class, if you can provide it, because it sounds interesting.
