Well so far Captain Cold is the moral center. And like I mentioned earlier, Why is Ray there?

Liberty's Edge

I think Ray is there entirely as comic relief.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Because paladins are HIlarious.

;-)

Well, they are the way I play them.

:-P

I think it's OK. It's still really new, has a relatively large cast, and also deals with both time travel AND superpowers. So even the norms have "weird" (period) clothing and mannerisms and motivations.

Amazing Red wrote:

The idea of Captain Cold as the Moral Center... should be a very sad thing indeed...

Ray needs to grow a bit more backbone and competence and take that role back.

The way it's going now... I predict one more attempt at Savage... which will inevitably fail... Cold and Mick will will murder Rip, Ray and maybe the professor... take the time ship and Loot throughout history.

And yet he is, I say that with no sarcasm. He was the one to

spoilers:

convince Sara to not kill Stein and convinces Mick to keep fighting the good fight as opposed to staying in the Post apocalypse version of Star city.

I just want Ray to stop making everything worse and to be good at something.

Nope! I'm there with ya. I thought he did a fine job as Superman. My only complaint with him, was that his costume was too dark...

Ohhh how I miss that costume now. :(

I thought it was funny when I was watching one of the later seasons of 'Chuck' that had him on it. I was just staring at him and thought 'He'd make a great Superman....' then Imdb'ed it and realized that it was Routh!!

I think he looked a LITTLE young... but 3-4 years down the road, he really would have nailed it.

That does not mean that I loved the MOVIE... I think he was an awesome Superman/Clark Kent... but the whole knocking up Lois and then abandoning earth.. and love triangle needing to bust up a happy family was absolute garbage.

There were MASSIVE flaws with the script, but the actors themselves I thought did a great job in that show. Well... at least Spacey and Routhe... I didn't care for lois much there either. She was much to young for a '5 years later' story.

** spoiler omitted **

Oh... I agree. He totally is. I just find it sad that the high point of the moral center is 'Lets not screw EACH OTHER over... Ok?'

He's fine with screwing every else... robbing the past... getting past people killed... threatening the space/time continuum.... but just not stabbing his own crew in the back.

>.<

And... yeah... that's about as noble as we've seen so far :D

Liberty's Edge

Mick does shift the morality line way to the bad side though. Don't think of Leo as the moral center so much as the moral median.

I loved the plot that used Kryptonian crystal technology to make a new landmass. I don't read comic books, so I don't know if they ever used it for that before, but I thought that was genius. It took a pre-existing concept and used it for something really unique. Also, it's the perfect Evil Genius Plan. It causes global catastrophes, but would also be really profitable and give a megalomaniac somewhere new to rule.

The love triangle was kind of meh. And I didn't dig that Lois Lane. Should have been Jennifer Connelly.

Sounds good all around there!

If they had cut out Cyclops and the kid, I think it would have been an instant classic at least on par with the early Reeves movies. And that plane crashing scene is still probably my favorite Superman scene filmed yet.

Liberty's Edge

Spoiler:
I kind of don't think Snart's going to go through with it but he might.

On one hand I'd be glad that they're continuing to cull the bloated cast. On the other hand, Mick's one of the better developed characters on the show. =/

Spoiler:

Yea, he arguably has the most character development. He's close to being my favorite cast member.

Liberty's Edge

Spoiler:
One possibility... Snart could be 'cryo freezing' Rory. Then they could put 'Rory popsicle' somewhere on the Waverider to keep him frozen and eventually have Gideon revive him when the mission is done. Thus avoiding the 'cannot let him roam around here' and 'cannot let him roam around where our families live' conundrum without killing him.

Of course, taking him off the ship would seem a pointless waste of effort if that was the plan.

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32, 2011 Top 16

I somehow don't think Rory is dead, but that he'll be out of commission for a while, and then come back helping Vandal Savage. At that point, either he'll switch side to help Snart, or Snart will realize he really does need to kill him.

Also, read yesterday that there's already discussions of cycling cast members, but hadn't expected it could happen this soon. Now that Rory is out, that leaves an opening they could fill potentially. Characters I've seen under discussion are Connor Hawk/2046 Green Arrow, Vixen, and Constantine. Could also be just about any non-A-lister from DC's roster.

No guess as to what's being done with Rory. Dropping him off in 2046 might be the least of several bad choices, but leaving him there and picking up Connor Hawke kind of sucks for Star City '46, and might constitute a change in history.

I'd be happy to see Vixen replace Rory. Her animal abilities give her a wide range of skills, as opposed to essentially being a walking flamethrower who's never allowed to cut loose for fear he might kill someone important to the timeline. The "criminal buddies" dynamic can be replaced with a similar "walk on the dark side" shared experience between Snart and Sara.

I don't care to see Connor Hawke on this team. Too damn many archers as it is, even if one or two aren't around at the moment: Ollie, Thea, Roy, Malcolm, Nyssa, Cupid...

I'm not a huge Constantine fan, but I think he works best as a solo act with occasional guest appearances. I don't feel he'd mesh well with the "pseudo-science action adventure" team we have here, even given the magic already represented by Hawkgirl and [perhaps] Vixen. Plus, I can only take so many British accents at a time. :)

Perhaps someone from the Suicide Squad (no one from the upcoming movie) or Forgotten Heroes (of which Rip Hunter was himself a member) would be a good addition?

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32, 2011 Top 16

I agree that another archer isn't needed. I'd love Constantine to join, but not now. If season 1 ends with them beating Savage, but then finding out some other big bad filled the vacuum, and they need to beat them instead, that could warrant a change in team - so if the new threat is magical in nature, recruiting Constantine then would make more sense.

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32, 2010 Top 8

Because I love the character....

I'd love to see them get saved by this mysterious woman who seems to be a thorn in Savage's side, a melee fighter like Sara, but more tactical as well. A natural leader. Bonus if they stop Savage and can dump Hawkbarrista somewhere.

Then they find out her name is Scandal...

So...I've seen some news about the writers wanting to change the main cast...

I think this is a good idea. This series is pretty weak as it is... We only have 2~4 good characters so right now. The rest is either dull or completely pointless, the villain is pretty boring and the plots has more holes than a swiss cheese in an acupuncture session.

I really want to like this show, but as it is... It's mediocre at best. :/

Liberty's Edge

Has it been confirmed somewhere that the cut characters were cut for good. If so, that's amazing!

I actually liked Mick but I'm okay with him leaving the cast if it means we can have a leaner cast and better told stories.

As long as CapCold, Stein and Ray stay on the team, I'm fine with it.... Sarah is pretty forgettable in this show, but at least she gets cool fight scenes.

Liberty's Edge

Eh. Unless the writers do a 180 with Ray I wouldn't miss him for a second. Thus far he's been the bumbling incompetent comic relief in most episodes.

Feral wrote:

That's fair... I mostly like him because of Arrow and his heroic disposition. It does annoy me that the guy who highhandedly built a shrinking Iron Man is portrayed as incompetent. :/

Liberty's Edge

I understand where you're coming from. I used to like Felicity but the writers character-assassinated her pretty thoroughly.

Feral wrote:

Felicity? The character from Arrow? Or did you mean Sarah and made a mistake?

Because I can understand (and partially agree) with both statements. :P

Liberty's Edge

I meant Felicity. I stopped watching Arrow because the tertiary characters' interpersonal drama started eating up half of each episode. That said, Felicity was never part of said CW-injected silliness drama back then. I semi-started watching Arrow again in light of the Flash crossovers only to see that Felicity has become Laurel 2.0.

Lemmy wrote:

I was pretty disappointed with Sarah at pretty much all times. For a reborn master league of Assassins member... She couldn't even take down Heat Wave WITHOUT his flamethrower??

That... is pretty sad. But yeah, you nailed my favorite three characters :)

Also... as much as I do love Stein.... I wish he played things just a BIT smarter. Firestorm is the biggest gun they have. I have no problem separating the characters to make some more drama... but when you finally fight off the time pirates and rescue your other half...

MERGE!!! Old man with a space gun is pretty dumb 'plan A' when you have Firestorm as an option...

although it's been reported as "new" news, I actually remember hearing that was the plan before the first ep ever aired

Of the current cast, I actually like Sarah, Snart, and Stein the best. Mick has been great the last few episodes as well.

Splitting Firestorm to me made perfect sense this past episode. Firestorm doesn't strike me as something you want to unleash in an enclosed space with potentially important and delicate machinery around. Seems a great way of blowing a hole in your vessel.

And Stein perfectly showed that Jackson is dead weight when it comes to his heroic escapades.

I would totally watch a Buck Rogers-esque show starring Stein.

Minor nitpick on this episode: TIME PIRATES? REALLY?

The Time Masters have to be the most incompetent chuckleheads on the face of the earth to allow that to be a thing.

Besides that, this was the first episode so far that made me feel anything but apathy. I could feel Snart's heart breaking on multiple occasions throughout the episode, and Mick's actor finally had time to shine, putting a lot of subtle emotion into him in quite a few scenes.

I'll be sad to see the back of Mick, really. It seems kinda like wasted potential to off him or have him go full villain with the character development that he was starting to get.

Stein is Jack Bristow reincarnated. The Time Pirates are doomed.

Sundakan wrote:

I disagree. I think that if time travel were to exist, then there would almost instantly be people using it to their own advantage, with little regard for consequences. What I find more unbelievable than "time pirates" existing in this show is that so many works of fiction exist that have time travel and do NOT have "time pirates".

Except, remember, the Time Masters are supposed to be the ONLY PEOPLE with time travel. Literally their entire purpose is protecting the timestream from people who might misuse that power.

If nobody else had that power, then there would be no need for an organization to prevent people from misusing it.

I'm still imagining Ma Hunkle on the ship with the rest of them as a permanent addition.

that would be so much fun.

Except the implication was always that they were the ones that invented this technology. So where did the pirates get it if not stealing it from them? And what do the pirates even DO? There can't be that many vessels just flying around in time to prey upon. Not enough to support apparently multiple groups of time pirates.

Especially given apparently Earth is the only planet with sentient creatures on it in the CW-verse...else why would Rip think the pirates would care if Earth was taken over by Savage?

Where did they get the tech? WHY did they get the tech? Why aren't the Time Masters making a concerted effort to try and eradicate them instead of flying around and waiting to get boarded? If people messing with the timestream is such a colossal issue a group of bandits puttering around space-time with one of their vessels (much less SEVERAL) should be pants-darkeningly concerning to the Time Masters given the amount of effort they've put into eradicating Rip and Co.

This all raises so many more questions than it answers.

It's almost like a time-travel show were full of plot holes... Who could expect that? XD

3 people marked this as a favorite.

I'm ready to accept a few plot holes, sure. Although, what's up with the whole "not knowing where Savage is" repeating story arcs? Savage isn't a time traveler, he's immortal. Remember when Rip got the drop on him in Ancient Egypt by himself, but couldn't pull the trigger (for whatever reason--he has no problem murdering lackeys every episode, but let me freeze when faced with the man who murdered my family)? Could we travel back to that location 5 minutes earlier, have Snart freeze Savage's legs, and have Kendra plant the dagger in his chest? That was quick.

Fine, whatever, you can't do that. My main issues are what should be a rich opportunity for several different stories has just been the same exact story EVERY EPISODE.

LoT Episodes 1- infinite
1) Crisis, we need to locate a macguffin.
2) Split up the team, leave the other half on the ship.
3) While Team A moves to secure the macguffin, Team B ditches out on a different task.
4) One of the teams gets in jeopardy.
5) Teams coalesce in an *epic battle and save each other, but Savage gets away.

*Epic battle = Ray flies in and shoots a couple random blasts! Hawkgirl swoops in and hits two mooks! Sarah knocks out a couple mooks with a stick! Firestorm flies in dramatically! Mick and Snart run in and...shoot their fire and ice over the heads of the mooks to "scare" them!

Seriously, you have a crazed arsonist and when he arrives with the cavalry he doesn't kill ANYONE? I guess you want it to be a "family show", but why aren't the villains on your team going for kill shots?

Second issue--Rip is the worst field general in history, but everyone who meets him who has heard of him treats him like he's time-traveler Batman.

Seriously, Vandal is tough, but why fight fair? Snart, freeze him. Kendra, kill him. Done.

Look at the last episode...

Rip's awesome tactics:

"Ok, so there's a ship that is holding our macguffin. We know it's a trap. Who should I take with me? Hmm. Ok, I'll take old guy, young guy with messed up ACL, and psychopath murderer."

"Captain, do you want to take the criminal mastermind who can keep the psychopath in check?"

"Nah."

"How about the master assassin who is great at stealth, or the super genius who has a suit that can both shrink and allow him to sneak around, or bring amazing weapons to the fight?

"Nah, we're good. I mean, if need be, old guy and hurt guy can form a nuclear powerhouse."

---5 min later----
"Crap, we need to leave someone on the ship. Old guy, you stay here. I'll take hurt guy and psychopath."

"But, then you don't have nuclear powerhouse anymore..."

"It's cool, I have a pistol and psychopath has a fire gun. Plus, hurt guy is a mechanic, so he can disable any futuristic technology we might face. We got this."

Absurd.

It's...I don't know WHY Rip keeps thinking Jackson can do all the things he thinks he can. He's a F#&!ING MECHANIC. Not even a mechanical engineer, he works on CARS for a living. Not space/time ships, not future tech that hasn't even begun to be invented by the time his natural lifespan expires, none of that.

CARS. Motorcycles in a pinch, but combustion vehicles of SOME kind.

The guy seems to be pretty smart (though he clearly dumped Wis hard), and good at what he does, but he's not a miracle worker. He can't magically learn this stuff 5 seconds after seeing it!

This all raises so many more questions than it answers.

Raising questions in episode 4 or 5 and not answering them isnt' the end of the world.

I'm firmly in the camp that says if OTHER people haven't found time travel... there would be no need for Time Masters. As a people who are forbidden to change time... what would they be protecting it from? JUST Themselves?

Honestly, I laughed aloud when I heard the phrase "Time Pirates". It's just... so COOL! I'm hoping we find out a lot more about the concept in coming weeks. But yeah, whatever is or is not possible with the timeline... They NEED Time Masters... and a lot of them just flying around.

I also disagree with the concept of CW being 'Earth Only'... Just by the nature of the Time Masters HAVING 'Space' ships. If it was Earth only thenthey could get away with a Delorian or something... breaching Space wouldn't be an issue.

Not even counting Rip's comments about the Man of Steel confirms a Krypton SOMEWHERE...

Liberty's Edge

Jackson is basically Cyborg with Stein instead of implants.

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32, 2011 Top 16

Well, a few episodes ago, Jackson did say that he spent down time reading the instruction manual on the ship's engines. If they had a good manual on repair and service, it wouldn't be completely outlandish for him to be able to use his skill with fixing cars to fix the ship's engines. He'd be much slower and less efficient on the time ship, but if he has a good intuitive grasp on working on cars, it could apply to other mechanical/electrical devices. Don't forget that modern cars are far from mechanical only machines. There's a ton of electrical and computerized parts to cars now, and a good car mechanic can fix them as well. Different story if it was a mechanic from the 1950s.

Sundakan wrote:

That episode name-dropped Kanjar Ro, and Hunter has previously alluded to Superman, so the CW-verse isn't just Earth. It just isn't casually interstellar like the comics are.

He probably expected the pirates to care about Earth because they were human; that is, Terran.
