Rage of Demons

4th Edition

Liberty's Edge

"Fight alongside Drizzt Do’Urden in the new Dungeons & Dragons storyline on computer, console or tabletop this Fall."

Drizzt is the next big thing for D&D 5E. But not for me. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Rage of Meh.

Sounds good to me

Table top bit is.....

Synopsis

Dare to descend into the Underdark in this adventure for the world’s greatest roleplaying game!

The Underdark is a subterranean wonderland, a vast and twisted labyrinth where fear reigns. It is the home of horrific monsters that have never seen the light of day. It is here that the dark elf Gromph Baenre, Archmage of Menzoberranzan, casts a foul spell meant to ignite a magical energy that suffuses the Underdark and tears open portals to the demonic Abyss. What steps through surprises even him, and from that moment on, the insanity that pervades the Underdark escalates and threatens to shake the Forgotten Realms to its foundations. Stop the madness before it consumes you!

A Dungeons & Dragons adventure for characters of levels 1–15

That was my reaction too, goldomark. I hate drow with a passion. I hated Second Darkness once it became nothing but drow, drow and more drow. 1st book wasn't bad. After that it went to crap. I have no interest in this and will pass on it.

I don't play 5th ed, but I may buy that just to read the story/lore...

Indeed

helping out the evil and chaotic, against something even worse.....its just like the real world, and intriguing

Oh goody. Your characters can tag along while Drizz't saves the day.

Maybe they can pull it off, but headlining an adventure with one of their main novel protagonists seems really hard to pull off to me.

Cool. I like the sound of this more than either of the last two stories (and I thought both of them were great). Have they said if it's being outsourced or written in-house?

I hope they do another player guide - my elemental evil PG just arrived and I think it's a neat way to expand player options for those that want them. An underdark theme will be much better (for me) than the elemental one.

Drizzt! Demons! Underdark! How original! Never done before! What's next, Elminster vs. spawn of Bhaal in Sword Coast? Or maybe ... evil white dragons in Icewind Dale? ;)

Supposedly being written by Green Ronin.

maybe we'll get against the giants next.

I saw something about needing to stop the incursion before Drizzt gives in to his darker impulses. Would be cool to see him become an über villain, or at least a force of destruction instead of happy shiny goodness (and angst).

Then again, when I was playing AD&D, I turned him from a CG Ranger to a CE Assassin, so maybe I'm not the most impartial guy to ask.

Either way, if it gives us another (free!) Player's Companion, I'll be a happy panda.

Yeah, they should totally do an adventure story called Giantkiller when you start with an orc raid upon a village and then fight increasingly harder giant types in various environments culminating with a battle against a mighty storm giant overlord in his cloud castle.

Hmmmm...........

You have played pathfinder right?

Read more detail, drizzt is just part of the whole theme, not the table top bit

I have, but I don't recall anything similar in a PF AP. What did I miss?

I suppose it's possible Drizz't won't be a major part of the table top adventure, but that's not clear unless you've got more information. And after the build up, some will be disappointed by that.

So Wisbro are doing "storylines" and this storyline Rage of Demons can be playedwith dice/real people as the 1-15 level Abyss thingy, or with new content for Neverwinter ("tentatively called Underdark") or the new Sword Coast game?

So a storyline is a seasonal metaplot like an Adventure Path, but spread through different media?

Fairly clever.

Plus they just released their Dragon+ app, though it seems to NOT be an app on my iPad, but a Magazine in my Bookstand (hey, look, I have a Bookstand!) and a new gamespace Fantasy Grounds Virtual Table.

Still hating on the content though. The art is not to my liking, the plot ideas derivative if not bankrupt and the culture just smells...off somehow. I am however, an egalitarian hater, so this should not be indicative of anything other than pure opinion and personal bias.

I do hope Paizo get their Virtual Gamespace happening...

Yep. They have a 6 monthly theme......tyranny, elemental evil, rage, etc

It entails novels, freebies online, computer games,....and for us table top stuff.....a big adventure, and themed adventure league!

I think the art is awesome......esp compared to some other d20 art

Art doesn't mean good fluff. Playability is something else.

Of course, you do not need to use an AP. You just need to buy it for it to be a success.

I have noticed that no one brought up the fact that this adventure path was inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Also, the creator of Adventure Time was brought in to help create the story.

While I am not super stoked about the Underdark, I am stoked about the Wonderland aspect. Chris Perkins released some pictures of some of the character art from a former Magic: the Gathering concept artist, and they look fun.

Here is the article on enWorld.

I really wish a Mary Sue character wasn't such a big part of this storyline.

Green Ronin made this adventure. The guy from Adventure Time is working on another project that is still secret. Probably a D&D cartoon since, you know, the guy works on cartoons.

Oh god if they make a D&D cartoon that looks like Adventure Time, I won't even bother. I don't even watch cartoons anymore (accept for the Avengers Assemble and new TMNT ones), because everything looks like Adventure Time, Regular Show, etc.

What I'm afraid of with a D&D cartoon is that we get a group of adventurers composed of a halfing rogue, a dwarf fighter, a elf wizard and a human cleric, running around without much a script.

What I'm sure of, is that if they are making a cartoon, it will be set in the Forgotten Realms. It is their default setting for quite sometime according to Nathan Stewart.

I don't have a problem with the Forgotten Realms or even the iconic class/race combos. "without much of a script" is a killer though.

Honestly a cartoon might be the best way to go. A live action (well, heavy CGI) series would be better, but probably too expensive to do justice to high fantasy. D&D is classically very serial and episodic in nature, showing the characters rising from humble beginnings to the heights of power. That can be done in a series much more easily than in a movie. Or even a series of movies, which would be harder to sell.

Anything Chris Perkins has a hand in I try and stay away from as much as possible.

I can't stand the silliness and humour he brings.

Oh, it will be set in the Forgotten Realms, if the cartoon is ever made. I will do you even one better: Not only will it be set in the Forgotten Realms, but it will be set in the Sword Coast, with a tie-in to the Neverwinter MMORPG. That second part may be false, but I can 99% guarantee it would be set in the Sword Coast region, as EVERYTHING released has been (thanks to the Neverwinter MMORPG).

I like 5e, but this just sounds terrible. Demon Lords rampaging in the Underdark? And being stuck assisting the most l33t D&D character of all timez? No thank you.

But not in the table top modules......

I don't know. It has been said that this adventure path was heavily influenced by Wonderland, and I feel that Adventure Time is a good representation of such. Though it is being written by Green Ronin, they still consulted Salvatore and the D & D team for the story and direction. It is possible that he was on that creative team meeting with Green Ronin.

As for the Drizzly issue, Perkins said that for the tabletop ap, the PCs are the heroes, not Drizzt. I take that to mean that the presence of Drizzly is expository at best, at least I am giving Wizards the benefit of the doubt.

I am interested in hearing more. Any particular products, or just stuff generally - like storyline stuff on the changeover from 3rd to 4th edition?

I do remember reading his DM Experience posts occasionally, but they seemed devoid of silliness or humor. Or anything... vaguely interesting. He had some good tips for staging and plot development from time to time.

Grand Lodge

I think a lot of the silliness of Acquisitions Inc is for the audience. I think his regular campaigns have a mood that is dependent on the players.

The Sword Coast has been the focal point of the Realms in CRPGs far longer than the Neverwinter MMO... Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 (though not their expansions)... Even Icewind Dale is really just the northernmost tip of the Sword Coast in my opinion.

It's interesting seeing which third parties the adventures are being licensed out to; it makes me curious who we'll see future adventures from. I'm personally hoping (but not too hard given the Realms focus) that we eventually see some Greyhawk love. I think Raging Swan Press and Frog God Games could be tapped to provide some excellent old school feeling Greyhawk adventures.

For me it is about too much of a good thing. I like the FR, even love them. Lots of good memories having adventures there. Nowadays we mostly travel between planes, so the FR just pops up now and then and that is perfect.

Golarion is interesting because it is one world with many settings on it. Numeria isn't Cheliax which isn't Osirion...

The FR could have some of that potential (Chult isn't Thay which isn't Cormyr...), but now everything is set on the Sword Coast. The only AP that I would buy from WotC would be if it was set in Selune's Tears on the Roc of Bral*. Never gonna happen, sadly.

Since Perkins said he was writting storylines for the next seven years, we might in for a lot of Sword Coast for a long time.

*Everything is getting Realmified. Rise of Tiamat was a DragonLance adventure. Elemental Evil was a Greyhawk adventure. Rage of Drizzt sounds and looks like Planescape. So Bral would be set in the Realms. Not that would mind since I palced it there in the first place and it needs an update. I bet the next AP is undead themed and Vecna is the summoned baddy at the end.

Personally, I'm holding out hope for Spelljammer to make its official return along with Mystara. I mean, if they don't go back to Mystara what was the point of authorizing the re-release of the two arcade games? As for Spelljammer, I just liked how gonzo the setting was. Don't know who I'd trust with those settings but there's got to be someone who'd do 'em justice.

As for the Realms, outside of small areas that never really got much attention such as Kara-Tur, Maztica, and Zakhara they're better left Forgotten as a campaign setting.

Scarab Sages

Just to raise this thread back from the dead to help the early drizzt nay Sayers and the ilk that thought the PCs tag along and watch drizzt win the day and ask for autographs later......umm you were wrong. He's barely mentioned in the adventure so grab a fork and start eating.

Um...I haven't read drizzt since the thousand orcs novel (which I know is far back in his storyline and I didn't even finish reading it to be honest), what do they mean by succumbing to his darker temptations? Is he gonna get even more angsty?

He's hardly likely to rejoin menzoberranzen (sp?) and even 'darker temptations' at worst probably just means he'll be killing drow alongside the demons so.....I don't see the darker temptations here.

Grand Lodge

You may run into him for a random encounter, is what I heard. Other than that, he isn't in the AP.

Of course, he showed up in the Aqcuisitions Inc. game at PAX Prime, and had succumbed to the "hunter" within (because of the spreading madness in the Underdark) and ended up almost killing Ommin!

I am really impressed so far with the Out of the Abyss adventure, but I have only read the first chapter. :)
