Still Training at 2nd Level

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

Grand Lodge

I am using Pathbuilder 2e and it tells me that you get Skill Training at 2nd level, but I cannot find that anywhere in the book. It is not listed on the Fighter class (my current character is a Fighter) and I cannot find it in the Introduction (under Leveling Up), nor in the Skills chapter.

Is this a mistake? I am currently looking in the 4th printing PDF of the Core Rulebook.

Thanks for any help!

No, a fighter does not get training in a skill at 2nd level.

Instead, the fighter's proficiency bonus in skills that the character trained at 1st level increase by 1, because the proficiency bonus in a trained skill equals 2+level, and level increased from 1 to 2. The fighter does not gain any increase in proficiency in untrained skills. That proficiency bonus is stuck at +0 until the proficiency becomes trained.

Also, the fighter gains a skill feat at 2nd level. A skill feat is a feat rather than training. Most skill feats require being trained in the associated skill, so the fighter's choices are limited. However, one of those skill feats is called Skill Training, and it trains the character in a skill. This is probably what Pathbuilder 2e is referring to.

Most players don't take the Skill Training feat, because at 3rd level the fighter gains a skill increase. That can be used to train an untrained skill or it can improve a trained skill to expert.

So any idea why both Pathbuilder and Wanderer's Guide offer training in a skill at 2nd level? Was this something in the Playtest that they forgot to remove?

Skill Training is a skill feat that gives you training in a new skill.

I have not used Pathbuilder nor Wanderer's Guide. What they are supposed to offer a fighter character at 2nd level is a fighter and a skill feat. I presume that the software should offer a list of feats to choose from. One item in the list of skill feats ought to say "Skill Training," because that is the name of one skill feat. If it offers anything called skill training elsewhere, I would guess that that is an error, or that your character did not use up all their 1st-level skill training.

The playtest was back in 2018. Any bugs left over from the playtest will have been corrected by now.

They have a baked in Skill Training AND a Skill Feat. I tried a couple of different times and both offer free skill training at 2nd level. I will be sure to ignore them for my PFS character.

Thanks for the speedy responses!

What version of Pathbuilder2e are you using? I'm on version 192 and I only get a Class Feat and a Skill feat at 2nd level for a Fighter.

Did you perhaps take a Dedication Feat for your 2nd level Class Feat? Some dedications come with Skill Training.

Web version 65. Oh yeah, I did Monk Dedication... Good point! I better check!

EDIT: That's where it's from! Because I am already trained in Athletics and Acrobatics, it opened it up to everything! Thanks Pixel!!!
