Not if you're concerned with optimizing space for multiple class decks either sleeved or unsleeved. The empty boxes are just not something you want to bring with you. And while I understand the original intent was for this to be for people at home, if you compromise to make it a viable solution for those at home and those carrying multiple class decks to varied locations then you want the space available to be for cards.
(Although I do like the idea of a section for minis.)
Theryon Stormrune |
Maybe something like this?
Not sure that foam trays are the way to go with PACG. hmmmm
Myfly |
You keep them if you want to keep your eyes, but if a box would actually be made, it'd be one that is for bringing your decks with you to games, and in those cases box storage is a waste and hurts portability.
As much as I dislike having the boxes just sit out, there just doesn't seem to be a viable alternative.
My idea was for home storage.... Your proposed solution could be easily realized with a MTG deck box (or the already available ultrapro pacg bix), right? How many class decks do you play when you go to a pacg op session. I guess ONE only at a time.

If it's for home storage then holding all class decks becomes even more important. So sure, holding the boxes makes sense in that case, but now the base set box size doesn't because you have to hold at least 11 class decks, and it really needs to have room for expansion. That's going to be a pretty big box.

With the capacity of 10 class decks, I would be happy.
Simply, you have to buy a second class deck atorage box if you own more ;)JohnF |
The assumption that the box only needs to hold one copy of any particular class deck is questionable, anyway. Quite apart from the fact that our household has more than one player of the PACG, it's easy to have more than one variant of the deck. I've got two rogue decks (one for Lesath, one for Jirelle). My wife has a different rogue deck. We also have ready-built decks for walk-ins at game days using the pregen builds from the rulebook.

Our class decks as currently in white deck boxes, which fit nicely into the main boxes, I might add. I would love to have a box for storing those in the same size as the base game. It could also hold the mats, etc. Forget Sajan santa, I would like to see a Ranzak promo mini. I am playing with a custom one, but just seems an appropriate promo mini.

I currently have 7 binders for my own characters. I'll be adding one more when I'm done Season of the Shackles and I unlock Enora. So that's 8 for my characters. I've sleeved all my cards. (I'd need room for that.)
Then I have 7 deck boxes for my loaner class decks. I bring all of this with me when I am running scenarios.
I actually am happy with my solution. Another big box is just an annoyance because it is so much easier just pulling a binder out for my character I'm playing or handing over a single class deck box if someone needs to borrow. A big box would be inconvenient when actually playing at store locations.

Yes, so it is...
Big box for home storage. ;)
Portable box for deck & dice is already available for PACG.
Further, UltraPro Adventure case (if it will be ever released) will be also a portable solution for multiple class decks.
So what we are missing is a big box solution for class deck paper boxes and as well 110 sleeved card packs for home storage. Similar solution to the base set insert in standard PACG box.

You would be happy, but the product wouldn't sell, and in the end that's what matters. If a product knowingly won't sell, it's not going to be made. Remember what Theryon said, your die idea caught on because it became about what the community wanted from the product, not just what you wanted.
If you make a home storage box, at a bare minimum it needs to hold what is known to be available. At the moment, that's 11, and we can all agree there's a good chance of it going past that. So why would you make a product that, for the people who would actually get a use out of it (those that buy more than a deck or two), are most likely going to need to buy another? That wouldn't make sense, you make it hold what exists, plus room for expansion if you expect that need to come up.
I'm not saying we need it to hold, what, 32 decks? But at a minimum it needs 11, and to be a decent product it needs at least another 4 or 5 past that for expansion.

We have chucked the inserts and have custom wooden dividers in the current box in use - Skull and Shackles right now. Foam core would also work.
The class decks are in card boxes - the size that just fits the base box, as are all the RoRL cards - those are in the RoRL base box as it isn't currently in play.
We sleeve all cards due to constant shuffling by my son. Also just easier to pile shuffle small decks.
Adventure deck and character deck boxes are cut up to make dividers within the larger white card boxes. Due to sleeves they cannot stay in the original boxes. We can fit several character sets, sleeved, in one of those card boxes.
Decks for travel go to separate smaller plastic deck boxes as needed.
I would love another box the size as the base game to store stuff when not in use or not traveling. It would be great to organize in.
Theryon Stormrune |
MyFly, we're not disagreeing with you. We're disagreeing with what it should hold.
10 class decks is not enough if you are going to collect all of them: Bard, Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Wizard, Paladin, Monk then probably Druid and Barbarian. So you'll need room for 11 class decks minimum for a home storage box. You'll need to be able to hold 11 * 110 sleeved cards for those that want to sleeve their cards. You can't assume that people won't sleeve them nor that they'd remove the sleeves when storing.
So if that means you don't have storage for empty boxes, then that's the way it has to be. A base set box would hold up to 6 empty boxes? I don't think it had room for the Character Add-on deck box. 10 or 11 empty boxes is a LOT of wasted space.
The idea of a space for related minis is a good idea.
This is what I meant about adjusting your expectations in order to get the community behind a project.
Andrew L Klein |
Yea the base set box hold 7 boxes (it does hold the add on). Increasing that by at least 4 (or even 3 if we choose not to even hold all the decks for whatever weird reason) is just nuts and is even more space you're taking from the decks themselves.
Personally, I think that based on its intended use, the adventure path box that is being worked will be a good use for this. It fits sleeved cards, and likely will have good space to store minis, and I don't think it's using space on the boxes which means even more class decks. Obviously we won't know until it releases, but I think it will do exactly what we want here (minus holding deck boxes for those that want it)

I got the mtg mox cube. If you don't sleeve your cards it will hold all of the 31 class decks I'm almost sure of it. Mine holds 8 class decks on the top and bottom. So 16 class decks means I need 2 of them for my style of storage. And there is room for dice and markers and other various things. The only down side is that they are $90 each.
Andrew L Klein |
It holds 900 double sleeved cards, so I'd guess it wouldn't go past 20, if even lucky enough for that. Each deck is 110 cards (109 not counting the rules card of course). I hadn't thought of using that in the meantime though, until a Pathfinder or a larger box comes out, that has to be able to hold the 11 we know of.
Myfly |
How many unsleeved cards fit in the base set insert? 1200, i think.
How many empty deck boxes fit into one row. May be 11.
So in unsleeved condition it should be no problem holding both deck boxes and cards for all 11 class decks. This collectors box is intended for home store (so unsleeved) whereas the adventure case is for sleeved cards and ready-to-go-n-play solution.
JohnF |
This collectors box is intended for home store (so unsleeved) . . .
Another unwarranted assumption. I know several players who sleeve all their cards. That's fairly common, actually - that's why there's an insert being made for the original base set box to hold sleeved cards.
I'd guess there's a fairly strong correlation between the folks who are prepared to pay the extra 25% or so to sleeve their cards and the folks who would pay extra for a box to store their card decks.
Andrew L Klein |
Yea I'm just gonna repeat what's been said, that's a bad assumption. Most sleevers aren't going to unsleeve just for storage.
Also, you aren't going to fit 11 boxes in a row unless you stand them straight, which means adding noticeable height to the box, to the point that now it just looks ugly.
Alienating the majority of sleevers isn't going to sell a product.
I know you want to store the boxes, but it just isn't feasible in a good product with this purpose.

I'd never heard of this before. Coincidentally, though, my FLGS got one in today in their Ultra Pro delivery, so I was able to take a look at it (or, at least, at the outer wrapping).
It looks intriguing, but I really wish it didn't come with all the MTG artwork! I went to some lengths to get the plain Pro Tower box(es), so I wouldn't really want MTG artwork on anything I bought for the PACG.
I wasn't able to open it up, so I couldn't find out if an Ultra Pro Clear Deck Protector (100) would fit in the compartments. If anyone has the answer to that question, I'd appreciate it if they'd let me know.

Pacg ultrapro sleeves are 120usd for an entire path... i do it like hawkmoon: got the actual adv path sleeved whereas RotR rests in its original plastic insert...
Therefore sleeved class decks go in the upcoming ultrapro adventure Case... and for home storage unsleeved in my proposed premium class deck storage box ... this is paizos strategy so far: *remember* all base set boxes are designed to fit only all unsleeved cards.

The reason they fit unsleeved cards is Paizo didn't consider sleeving when they designed it.

I don't think it wasn't that they didn't consider it but that if they had designed it with cards sleeved, it would be a bigger box. Some companies design their boxes and inserts to allow sleeved product, some don't. I'm glad the box isn't bigger. But it does mean that my set is housed in a different box than the original (which simply contains empty boxes).

MyFly, I think you're going to have to understand that:
1) Paizo doesn't make boxes nor inserts. They license accessories through other companies like Ultra-Pro.
2) They're* (still) designing a generic storage box which will hopefully be out soon. [NOTE: My cardboard box holding my S&S set is showing a bit of wear-n-tear!] And hopefully it will hold all the base set and adventure decks sleeved. (Plus a few extra cards.)
3) If you really want a product that will hold class decks, you will have to come up with something on your own like you did with the plunder dice. Which means ...
4) You need a product that people will buy into. So you have to get past your assumptions about unsleeved cards and storing empty boxes. Come up with a design that will work.

Lets turn to other issues than weight limitation:
There is definetly use of empty class deck boxes!!! E.g. within these boxes I will store my old class deck cards which have been errataed! I dont throw these away due to the fear of getting my eyes poked out :)))))
So we definetly need those empty class boxes(and the art on these is sooo pretty) in the big storage box for the errata cards.
Andrew L Klein |
Now you open another factor that's going to vary heavily among players.
A lot of players will trash the errata cards once they are reprinted with corrections. Of the players that keep them (myself included), how many are going to want them taking up valuable collection box space? I certainly don't, and I have a hard time believing the number that do is going to be very high.
Myfly |
Have you found a manufacturer to make the box?
First we need some opinion from VIC, if Paizo is interested in producing just the empty game box with appropriate art on it.
If so, then BrokenToken may do some insert variations, such as insert for
- empty paper boxes plus cards unsleeved
- standard PACG insert (already available)
- insert for Iconic heroes miniatures
- etc.
This could be a new joint business for Paizo and BrokenToken as well!!
If Paizo is not interested, then we have two options
I) you buy a base set of Skull&shackles and throw the content away - just for the box ;-) LOL and we print a sticker which goes over the box lid and sides of the box
II) theryon and andrew visit Paizo to spy out the US box factory contact data and we will do a box of our own
Sandslice |
There's a simpler way if it's just for storing cards and decks. There are ordinary cardboard boxes used for mass storage of CCG cards (Magic, Pokemon, etc) in various sizes. At the nearest FLGS to me, I can buy a 12" box, which can store almost a thousand such cards unsleeved, for just over $1 US.
A 15" box can store a whole AP (or a full set of Class decks) sleeved, and doesn't cost much more than that.
I can also say that the weight of a loaded box (if that's a significant concern) is less than that of the game boxes we have. The only caveat to this option is that accessibility (dividers and suchlike) isn't the easiest to work out; you'd need to get creative or something.
Andrew L Klein |
First go to a manufacturer to see if it'll be made. Worry about art afterwards.
I'm pretty sure Paizo is pretty linked to UltraPro for this stuff, so most likely a partnership with BrokenToken (especially as small as they are) is out of the question.
If the Adventure Case is a different size, I'd be interested to see if BrokenToken does anything for that.

If it is a german manufacturer, it wont help...
Shipping the big boxes would cost a lot to the US.For myself, i would buy a played and used copy of skull&shackles ... Or the german pacg version. Box is the same size. Create a sticker with pacg for cover box lid.
Use foam board to build the insert. Finished.

Above mentioned is the personally-customized version explained.
A professional realization would be if
- paizo designs and manufactures the box (just same game box as base set with different art) - victory point games did it the same way for the game "darkest night". They named the box "collectors box" and added a game-thematic dice tower to it. It is a cool solution. Paizo could add a special class deck or/and a pacg dice tower.
- whatever you want to do with this box is up to you. Customized foamboard solution or broken token insert. Different inserts could be offered for eg. For class decks or for miniatures or the standard pacg insert to carry a sleeved adventure path.
So there are plenty opportunities for such a collectors box... and a variety of addons ...
I would be happy if Paizo would give a statement if they are interested or not.
