I think her next step is being the first woman to develop a Pathfinder Adventure Path. Yes, I know, if I travelled back to 2007 and told you folks a lady is gonna be in charge an AP everybody would laugh at me. ;-)
Next step will indeed by developing my own AP start to finish. And being a terrible SJW, I plan on filling it with terrible things like killing monsters, stealing treasure, and crawling through dungeons. I may even push the limit and includes elves and dwarves.

Miss Crystal? How do you come up with names for your characters?
It depends on the character. If we have a lot of examples of a particular race's names, I look those up and try to figure out the way they put sounds together. Orc names have a lot of harsh consonants and stops, while elven names tend to be longer with lots of lilting, soft sounds like L's and E's and I's.
A lot of times I use real names from friends or family or celebrities, and tinkering with the spelling of cadence or looking up older versions of the name.
Some days I just say "screw it" and use the most obvious name in the world. In Hell's Bright Shadow, for example, Rexus Victocora is supposed to be confidant and excitable and really get the PCs excited about fighting back; he's rebellious teenage spirit and optimism, and his name is a bastardization of Rex Uictoria; literally "King of Victory." Meanwhile Korvadro is a crow-woman, and her name is just a tweak on corvidae; she's literally named "crow".

For Anuli and Holomog, I looked at a lot of Igbo and Yoruba words and names, not necessarily to lift words whole-clothe, but to get some ideas for common syllables, consonants, and vowels.

What video games do you enjoy playing, if you enjoy playing them at all?
What video games are you currently playing?
I'm a child of the 80s, and consequently I love platformers. Played a ton of Megaman and Metroid growing up, and plenty of Mario Brothers. I also love games with tons of exploration and quirky characters, like the Legend of Zelda or the various LucasArts adventure games. Never got much into the Final Fantasy series, sadly; something about the grinding always made them feel more like work than fun.
I still love video games, but between the day job and the freelancing I don't have a lot of time for them anymore. I'm currently replaying Dragon Age Inquisition, and about halfway through my first playthrough of BioShock: Infinite. Tetris and Pokemon Y are my current standby games on my DS (Sylveon FTW), and when I just need to blow fifteen minutes I still really love FTL even though I've beaten it a few times now.

Played Undertale yet? If not, you should. It's an indie RPG on Steam with rich (and original!) lore, memorable characters, and no requirement for grinding. Not to mention a soundtrack that's to die for.
I can 99% guarantee you will fall completely in love with it.

Good suggestion Jiggy, torn between Undertale and Salt & Sanctuary as my new "buying this game, don't care if I should or not" myself currently.
Don't know anything about Salt & Sanctuary, but I recommend Undertale if:
• You like learning the original lore of a new world• You enjoy a strong narrative in your gaming
• You like a game with memorable, interesting characters
• You like the general JRPG format, but could do with less grinding and more engaging combat gameplay
• You can appreciate old-school pixel-art graphics, ala the NES and SNES eras
• You want a game that will affect you forever without you having to devote hundreds of hours to it
------------------------
If that list seems mostly positive to you, then you should play Undertale ASAP (and try really hard not to run into any spoilers). If instead that list seems mostly negative (hate old-school graphics, looking for something you can play regularly for years to come, prefer grinding over narrative, etc), then Undertale might not be a priority right now.
But if you don't play Undertale, then there will eventually come a point where you can't really call yourself an RPG gamer anymore. Just sayin'. ;)

I picked up Undertale a few months ago and started playing, but I keep getting distracted from it by other projects >.<

Hrm. I was thinking Swahili-Zulu, but I can see your choices better now. Back to le proverbial drawing board!

@ Alayern Speaking horn mayhaps...? ;)
Ack Crystal, you should ask the T-Rex for additional video game time guaranteed via contract, as I imagine video games giving me the sad kitten eyes when I do not play them enough (pure torture). And I know I most certainly need my video game down time, I find it hard to write or layout, or work at all, unless I have had my pixel fix.
Actually Crystal, speaking of old games, I was curious how you feel about the old SSI, Black Isle Studios, etc days of PC fantasy gaming. Did you ever play and enjoy games like Darksun: Shattered Lands, the Baldur's Gate series, the Eye of the Beholder series, Menzoberranzan, etc?

I played very little of the classic D&D computer games. I played a little Eye of the Beholder, and recently re-played it with Wes and James and Lissa, but asside from that I never really picked them up, so I don't have that nostalgic love. A lot of it comes down to me being very bad at party management. I picked up Beamdog's Baldur's Gate remake ages ago, but still haven't done anything beyond play through the tutorial, mostly because the interface feels so alien to me, not having grown up with it.
GM_Beernorg |
Fair nuff...had similar feelings when the interface changed in Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, I was so used to ES: Morrowind and Oblivion that I put the game down for a long while after failing badly first attempt, got used to it after some improvements to the interface, but I totally get what you mean.
More nostalgia for me... ;)
(Baldur's gate is worth pushing through, as it is a great game and story, though as you noted, video game time seems tight for you, which I can also understand whole heartedly)
oww, I should play some Gate tonight after I finish the required several hours of editing and layout for Flying Pincushion Games, as a reward for working so dang hard.

Will we ever see more of Flork Fumblepot? He's ADORABLE!
I love all three of the goblin NPCs I wrote up for Dynamite's Goblins series, but I'm honestly not sure if he's a character we get to use again or if he has to live in the comic book universe. I suppose either way I could write up a few new goblin NPCs and make James add them to adventures.
Who wants a 17th level goblin cavalier?

I filmed that at 2am. I had to film 20 takes to say "GenCon 2016" correctly, and then they ended up not even using it XD

Wow, the announcement for Ironfang Invasion blew my mind! Ever since I read the campaign setting for the first time I envisioned a long guerrilla campaign between Nirmathas and Molthune and you guys sure are delivering it! The fact you are developing it is just the cherry on top!
Can you say anything about the AP? Even broad strokes? Are the PCs from Nirmathas, Molthune or anywhere else?

I can't say too much more than what we've publicly announced, except that we're finally going to have an AP with a lot of dwarfy-elements (mostly just in one volume), and that makes me happy. I'm personally a huge fan of hobgoblins, too, because they're one of the few monster races we haven't spelled out as being fairly sexist in one direction or the other; hobgoblins don't care about your gender, they only care if you can hold a sword and not turn tail in a fight. That means lots of cool female hobgoblin soldier art!
The PCs are generally expected to be Nirmathi, as the invasion begins in Nirmathas and the AP itself is fairly wilderness-focused (three of the six APs being mostly set in the wilderness). There's absolutely no reason you can't shift the first volume south to take place in the Backar Forest, however, or play a PC who is secretly a Molthuni spy or sympathizer in Nirmathas who has to make peace with their mortal enemies to stop a larger threat.
