What would you say your favorite part of Golarion to write about is?

As far as what I like writing about, I love talking about how societies work on a personal level. What life is like for average, non-adventuring citizens of Golarion. That's part of why I love writing gazetteers for cities. I also love writing superstitions and mythologies--not religious beliefs but the fables and fairytales and urban legends people tell each other.

As far as regions I like writing about, I like Garund in general, and the many city-states within the Mwangi Expanse in particular, as well as Lirgen and Yamasa (or what's left of it now).

Just got my copy of In Hell's Bright Shadow and I wanna say this:

Pure unadulterated gushing ahead, you have been warned!:
EHR! MAGERD! This is so incredibly awesome! You really made Kintargo a place a PC can care about, and your characterizations of the NPCs are beautiful! Even Barzilli Thrune, a real rotter! You made him someone I think even the most Lawful PC think, "yeah, this guy's a real piece o' s#*$!" I totally imagine him doing something like eating roasted ravens just to spite the PCs, telling his aide they taste like chicken or something with a disdainful sneer! Thank you for this awesome start to an awesome AP!

What's your next big project? :)

What was Rexus' name before he underwent the change? I realize this would be very uncouth to ask an actual trans person, but:

A. Rexus isn't real.
B. There'd probably be some way that PCs could learn that the Victocora nobles never had a son, so knowing that would be a good backup piece of information to have. Also, any time you can give a friendly NPC secrets that they want to keep from the party, however innocent those secrets may be, is always a good thing!

Oh, that's good. I'm stealing that for the office game!

I have a few small things in production right now, but since joining the Paizo staff fulltime I don't have as much time to freelance. I'm wrapping up a Freeport adventure and a few PF articles, and contributing to the new edition of Blue Rose as well. I have a few self-published products that I hope to start releasing soon for Mutants and Masterminds as well. Nothing big at the moment, and I'm hoping to leave myself some breathing room for a few months to recharge my batteries.

I never actually wrote a deadname name for Rexus; he's always been Rexus in my mind, and named after his grandfather. It was probably something multisyllabic, beginning with a C and ending in an "ine" or an "ivia," giving Chelish naming traditions. I doubt he'd be incredibly embarrassed by it, but I imagine he'd still hate it as much as you'd hate an embarrassing childhood nickname; probably something he wouldn't want to bring up, but wouldn't necessarily sneak around to cover up. If any of your PCs are nobles, they probably even heard scandalous rumors about the Victocora daughter a few years back.

Oh wow.... This one doesn't require a soul as payment (though donations are always happily accepted by my friendly staff), but it's a hard one. I've been gaming for 21 years at this point.

There are a lot of great worlds out there that I adore: Silver Age Sentinels, Planescape, Darksun, Shadowrun Seattle, Freeport, Rifts, Nightspawn, Little Wizards, Blue Rose, Eclipse Phase...

I'm going to limit myself and disqualify any licensed settings (sorry Ninja Turtles RPG; I love the Leg ninjas and Bio-Spawn corporation, but you have an unfair advantage) and any setting I've personally worked on and say the Freedom City universe for Mutants & Masterminds. It's just such a fun and loving homage to so many comic books, it's hard not to love it.

Planescape and Darksun are to close to call for a personal favourite of mine, just too much awesome to chose, so, gotta say, you have excellent taste Crystal :) (guess I like my campaign settings strange and harsh, not sure what that says bout me LOL)

So I thought you might be amused by this:

I was reading over the pamphlet mentioning all the events at Dragoncon and there was one called The Masters of Game Design. Under speakers it mentions an I. Frazier.

Directly underneath that name is where it takes place, the Crystal Ballroom.

I squeed aloud when I saw it... and then I made myself sad when I reread it.

Ahh, it happened again under Fantasy World Building.

Ok, so I maybe offered Crystal a soul that wasn't mine to give for a pretty easy question answer.

I may, or may not, have been extremely sleep deprived and suffering from RPGSS hangover. If I disturbed or offended anyone (and yes that includes Frank, it is his soul after all) I apologize.

Anyways, enjoy your time off (if you actually get any Crystal) I know I am in the office on this hot and sunny Labor Day in Rochester, NY, it pretty much sux.

Given the new archetypes in Occult Origins tied to the Esoteric Order of the Palatine Eye utilize the Harrow in their class features, I was wondering what that means for the Harrow. Is that an aspect of Ustalav's Varisian heritage creeping into their rites, or does it mean the Harrow's even older and more universal than we previously believed, Osirian like the Order's other rites or even passing from the Fallen Angel Tabris himself?!

Also (sorry for the double-post, but I had another question), James Jacobs mentioned your awesome work on Anuli in Distant Shores (I agree that it was awesome, especially that clever bit about how the people of Holomog depict Asmodeus as a woman sticking it to that misogynist, when I read that I actually laughed "HA!" out loud and my brother looked at me weird). Since you directly worked on Distant Shores, do you know who wrote the chapter on Segada? I have some questions regarding both it and the greater culture of Degasi as a whole (namely, which indigenous cultures Degasi and Segada are based off of so I can conduct further research to more accurately and respectfully roleplay a character hailing from Segada).

Oh, no no no, nothing at all like that. Those archetypes aren't related to one-another in-world; they just ended up in the same spread because they're all archetypes for Advanced Class Guide hybrid classes. The only archetype related to the Palantine Eye--the True Silver Throne--doesn't draw power from the Harrow specifically (although given the Order's habit of stealing magical traditions from other cultures, I can totally see individual members of the Silver Throne cribbing Varisian magic).

The Harrowed Society is a secret society introduced in Inner Sea Magic and unrelated to the Esoteric Order of the Palantine Eye (unless you want them to be in your campaign). Instead, they operate from a private school, and are dedicated to understanding the Harrow, though very few members of this school/secret society are ethnically Varisian.

The Harrow itself is still very, very old, predating Ancient Osirion and being contemporary with Thassilon and Azlant. It's a folk magic developed by common people rather than high and mighty wizards or magical beings, hailing from superstition and faith and generations of refinement. We've probably explored the Harrow's origins a lot more than Golarion's other occult mysteries, and its very much an artifact of the native people who inhabited Varisia before Xin conquered it, and developed into its more modern form during the Age of Darkness thanks to those same nomadic people.

I just noticed that after I couldn't edit it. I'd seen the Harrowed Society archetype with a Palatine member illustrated next to it and got confused. Sorry! And thank you for the answers regardless! *blushes embarrassedly*

Lanowar wrote:
For those who missed out on Paizocon can you give us a possible run-down of the rather excellent sounding Goblins and Dinosaurs adventure? The idea of Goblins shooting lasers on the back of Dinosaurs is too intriguing not to enquire about!

The PCs were enjoying a lovely day in Sandpoint when suddenly, goblin attack! Except one goblin has a laser pistol and is running around shooting anything flammable with it. Then goblins on pteranadons swoop in; some of them continue the attack while others raid the storehouses, flying away with jars full of pickles.

As the PCs are cleaning up, a goblin in a '56 Cadillac pulls up and says "Get in, losers." He explains that he happens to be immortal, and has watched the universe die and restart a half-dozen times, going mad over and over again. To alleviate his boredom and ennui he built a temple of elemental time, from which he could pull out interesting toys, pets, and friends. Sadly, the Birdcruncher tribe found his temple, called him a nerd, and kicked him out. Now the Birdcrunchers are going to use the mobius at the heart of the temple to re-write reality by inserting pickled vegetables into key points of the universe's birth, creating a reality where everything that isn't goblins is pickles.

Their new friend drops the PCs off outside his temple, and they fought robot guards, goblins using VR rigs to control velociraptors, the nerd's uplifted triceratops girlfriend, strange rents in time and space, and goblin gunslingers. Finally, they reach the center of the temple and discover Warchief Gnashtooth--clad in space marine armor, surrounded by goblin cyborgs, and commanding a T-rex, about to install the final pickle.

They defeat Gnashtooth in a climactic battle and restore the balance of time, at which point, their goblin ally reveals that he is, in fact, a kobold, and only pretended to be a goblin because everyone seems to be more fond of goblins in this version of the universe. Then he introduces himself as Meepo.

... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand now I'm trying to put this into context in Blue Rose, despite that said setting has no goblins, no lasers, and no dinosaurs. And totally doesn't fit the setting. Dang it. I might have to steal this for a one-off (with permission) at some point. :)

*grumbles half-heartedly about too many great game ideas and not enough time*

Hey, welcome back Crystal!

Burning thing of the day, cats, dogs, other creature, or none, what sort of pet person are you?

3 people marked this as a favorite.

So Crystal, I have an interesting character concept. Not sure about the race or class, but the concept is solid.

Concept:

The Athonis family has protected the common folk of Ustalav against the dangers of the night for generations. Although their men were great warriors, they could not match the women, whose supernatural might granted them abilities above and beyond the normal. They could all be identified by a (insert outsider/fey/whatever type here) rune on the palms of their hands, and it grew and became more complex as they themselves grew in power. So imagine Matriarch Khana's surprise when one day a male was born with the marks.

At first it was thought a fluke. Nothing more than an accident of birth. But the boy displayed the unnatural strength of the line, and so, reluctantly, the elders started training him.

The boy took to it like a fish to water. His ability to harness the power was unrivaled by any of his peers, and he soon began to join the hunt with the elders.

However, the boy never felt... right. His skin always felt ill-fitting, and he never fit in with the jocular boys who were rather to angry and irrational for his tastes. Eventually, he consulted the matriarch about these feelings.

Khana quickly made the connection between the boy's feeling and his marks. She knew that she must discover her true self on her own, in order to come to terms with it, and although Khana helped the girl a little bit, Khana eventually sent her off on a journey, hoping that she would come to better understand herself on her own.

I originally based this concept of off an idea for a Buffy fanfiction about a transgendered Slayer.

What do you think?

I am a dog person. You can trust a dog, whereas cats always play the long game and bird... birds have never forgotten they were dinosaurs, and it makes them bitter. We have a corgi at home named Calamity who helps us get a lot of exercise, even on rainy days.

The dirty secret of the game industry is that you have very little time to play once you work in it fulltime, and I've had the time to run my game exactly once since Bestiary 5 released, thanks to family commitments, deadlines, and freelancing. Some of the monsters that we pulled form past issues of the Adventure Path, like Vescavores and Woolipeds, I've used in my games, but I haven't had the chance to try out any of the brand new monsters yet

That said, as a fan of the 1980s series Amazing Stories, the animate hair is the best monster in this or any other Bestiary, followed shortly by the apallie.

I know the Harrow isn't directly tied to the celestials, but what celestial type would be most interested in it, in such a way that any aasimar descendants they might have are drawn to its mysteries?

Removed a scorpion from our hotel room while at Lava Tubes national park caving, a plastic cup and a post card ='s one saved bark scorpion, and safe sleeping for all involved. :)

Liberty's Edge Assistant Developer

The Harrow's themes revolve around allegory and insight through experience and personal growth. The more you've seen and learned and experienced, the more likely you can interpret the cards in meaningful ways. Personal growth, insight, and enlightenment is the agathion bailiwick, and aasimars descended from that line would probably be more drawn to the Harrow, though they might not have any greater potential to use it.

owww, a reason to play an alt aasimar and use harrow, I call that a win!
