Bleah. I hope the costume ends up with more color than that photo suggests. Mostly B&W with a few pale gold touches...that doesn't say "Aquaman" to me, it says "Black Manta."
Yeah. I like the look, but this recent "everyone needs to have muted/dark colors on their costumes, like Batman!" trend in DC movies is getting really old. The Marvel movies have proven you can make characters with costumes that involve the bright colors of their comic counterparts and still have it work. (Though I don't blame them for putting Hawkeye in black with purple highlights instead of his goofy pointy-masked purple comics getup.)
I mean, I fully support ditching the orange shirt (and it has a precedence in both the comics and the DCAU) but blacks and grays don't scream Aquaman. There needs to be some green and gold in there.

Hey, orange is the new black. :)
No, I realize the producers are going to see a need to make some characters' costumes less garish; your example of Hawkeye, and similar considerations with Mockingbird's mask and sleeves in some versions of that character, apply. One (fortunately failed) treatment of Superman some years back would have had him in a black costume. No. I'm sorry, you don't get to redecorate Superman
But I digress.
The problem I have with Aquaman's costume is that with very slight variations, he's only had two costumes in the past 70-ish years: the usual orange-and-green, and that awful blue-and-white "wave camo" pattern from the mid-'80s. Anything but something very close to the orange-and-green is going to feel like a radical departure -- and we're already getting a decidedly not fair-skinned blond in Jason Momoa. I find that casting interesting, but I can only be expected to accept so much change in a long-established character.

Hot damn. He's like a natural evolution of where Jonothan Frakes!Aquamam was going. Dig this.
While I'd be down with a regal gold and green scheme, it is far too easy to make aquaman look ridiculous, painfully so. I can see why they went in the direction they did.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of the "mute all the colors, no fun allowed!" thing that Man of Steel!DC is stuck with, but I don't think I'd be enthusiastic about a straight port of the "iconic" Aquaman look either.
Then again I had doubts that the color trainwreck that is Vision could translate well to the screen and Marcel went and proved me wrong there.
I don't know, I'd just like to see Mamoaquaman in a more vibrant film. Something with The Guardians of the Maser's palette instead of the Watchmen film's.

I was referring to this look. Which seems to be part of what the movie look is based on.

I had not seen that one, but then I pretty much ignored DC after the lead-up to 52 (not the New52 Universe, but "52" the weekly comic series.)
And God, do I hate that harpoon hand he got back in...Atlantis Chronicles? Time & Tide?

I'm pretty sure that was his look in the late '90s, early 2000s? It's definitely the look that the DCAU used for him in Justice League and Unlimited. (Minus the armored sleeve.) They went back to the Orange and Green look for the New 52 (and perhaps before that.)

First Justice League episode I saw was the part 2 of the Aquaman story. When he goes "I believe this is mine," and walks away leaving Ocean Master to die, I went "Superfriends, we are not."

one of the best lines in the entire series.
Excellent treatment of aquaman.

I'm moderately optimistic. I actually liked MoS quite a bit, and if they can make it as good as that, this should be a good movie.
Sure he won't be the best Aquaman, but he might just be good.

I really liked Man of Steel as well. I know it has detractors, but I worry a lot of people viewed it through lenses set to nostalgia. It was darker but not hopeless or depressing. And Cavill is a great superman!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
What got me was the sadness as Superman did what he had to in the fight against Zod. Imagine meeting someone of your own kind for the first time...well, ever, and he ends up being a space nazi. I'd be sad and horrified too.

It seems we really must disagree :(
I disliked Man of Steel. I actually fell asleep while watching it, which should be quite the proof of my extreme sense of boredom since it was very loud. It should be pointed out I never read a superman comic in my life and never watched a movie about him either.
The movie was bad because supermen didn't have a character - it literally skips between him as a space baby and him saving people from a burning freighter in the gap of a single scene, and throughout the movie we never learn about him as a person. Maybe that works for people who've seen many variations of his story before but for me that made the character so flat that I just couldn't care.
Then there were the action scenes which were the industry standard of toppling sky scrapers and destroying entire towns and killing thousands of bystanders without ever giving the fact a second thought. Not very heroic - as some people pointed out, it's less as if Superman is saving humanity and more as if two hostile aliens invaded Earth and chose it as their battleground, at the expense of the helpless natives.
Maybe there was some more character development and plot in the middle of the film. I wouldn't know, though, seeing as how I was asleep.

Man of Stell was excellently portrayed. If you were told to restrain yourself, never to act in anger, never to act out for your entire life, and then finally got to cut loose, your fight would look exactly like the Superman vs Zod fight.
And yes it is a newer Superman who's still learning his limits, which includes the ability to limit his destructive capabilities.

Really, the only thing about MoS that I disliked was how they portrayed Pa Kent. Pa Kent even suggesting that Clark shouldn't help people? WTF? Yeah, sure he backpedaled on that immediately but still.
I can understand fear for your kid and all but that and the stupid suicide scene were entirely unnecessary.
A second, minor complaint was how much time they wasted on Krypton and how useless the super-soldiers were against a scientist.

I completely agree. I think Superman is a horrible character to do the grimdark angle on. It works for Batman, because Batman is a dark vengeance driven character. It doesn't work for Superman, which ultimately is a more of an optimistic, hopeful character/comic.

Sorry, but I really take issue with this perspective. Superman is a superhero, bUT he isn't perfect.
It may be headcanon to some, but to me superman learned how to be a superhero as a young man by spending time with the Legion of Super Heroes in the far future, who showed him the basics. You really need to learn how to avoid property damage when fighting someone with a power level like superman- you don't start off being able to save everyone while beating up the bad guy without breaking a sweat, it takes lots and lots of practice. In a reality where this didn't happen, you would end up with what we saw in man of steel - keep in mind hen was attacked by someone just as powerful as he was for the first time EVER - he's not going to know what to do other than defend himself, which he did well. The scads of death that people attribute to superman was something done by zod and his legbreakers, primarily by knocking superman through things.

I will hardly call MoS grimdark. Darker than a lot of Superman, sure, but at the core it was about a guy who always struggled to accept himself and find his place in the world, who was abruptly thrust into a setting where he was struggling to tread water, faced by people as strong as he with the mindset to kill, and whose callous disregard for life is appalling, and when it came right down to it, Clark rose to the challenge and saved the world. He kept fighting against seemingly impervious foes and won. He wasn't perfect, he has a lot to learn but he's finally on his way to becoming Superman.
Because that's the point of the movie. He isn't Superman yet. He's Clark Kent trying to find out what he wants to be.

This was and remains my one major problem. This wasn't a good Pa Kent. It was a different take on the character - something really hard to do - but it was fraught with bad decision making and bad parenting.
Pa Kent was usually an amazing father, and it was something I looked up to. (NOTE: I have not seen the Smallville series past the first season, so, I dunno what he's like there.) In this one? As a father, I just kept going, "No, no, No, NO! Not that way! ARG!"
(It didn't help that I strongly disagreed with his decision to save the dog, but die himself. Bad choices.)
Don't get me wrong - I understand his choices. He wanted to protect his son, wanted to make sure he had the maturity before he got the exposure. I get it. It wasn't handled or displayed well.
The Pa Kent thing aside, I genuinely did enjoy MoS. I think I've waffled on it from time to time - allowing my opinion to be swayed by others one way or the other - but Pa was the only thing that at all really made it difficult to enjoy the film. If that had been changed or slightly altered, I think I would have been a more ardent defender.

I have always preferred DC over Marvel. That said, I have loved what they have done with Marvelverse.
As for the upcoming Man of Steel sequel Dawn of Justice, I have a lot of concerns that they are using it as a launching point for a Justice League movie. Cameo appearances by Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Cyborg. However, I must admit, I agree with the OP. I think the casting of Jason Mamoa and the look they have given Aquaman are great. No, he's not the blonde haired, fair skinned, cheesy sonar calling Aquaman of the Comics. Quite honestly, for me, anything they could have done would have been better than the Aquaman of the comics, at least for me, ymmv.

Yeah, I think casting Momoa is a great move - he's already got a badass credibility that tells me he's not going to be playing Aquaman as any sort of joke, but a peer of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
DC has the opportunity to cast some really great actors in the movies they have slated - Momoa would be a controversial choice for some but I think it's inspired. I do think they've dropped the ball a little on the upcoming Shazam movie - Dwayne Johnson would have been an amazing choice for Captain Marvel. Instead, they took the obvious route and cast him as Black Adam. I don't doubt he'll do a great job, but I think they missed an opportunity there.

From what I heard, they did have him picked as Captain Marvel, but he decided he'd prefer Black Adam.

I'm just hoping he doesn't look quite so washed out. Maybe some blues and more prominent golds in the costume, because it appears that the only thing DC took away from their failure with the Green Lantern movie is: 1) the colors were too bright, so we need to tone those down, and 2) people don't want humor in their superhero movies.
Seriously, the Wonder Woman promo shot looks like Xena goes to Hell, and this one is one step away from a black and white photo. I really want to be optimistic about this one, but it's difficult. DC does better TV (at least until Daredevil is released, maybe). Marvel still owns the silver screen.
