Heavy Armor Sword & Board Investigator?

Advice

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I wanted to write up a warrior who is incredibly well read and quick of wit, who has an encyclopedic knowledge of monsters and their weaknesses and wades into battle clad in steel and wielding sword and shield. Funny enough, the Investigator seems to be pretty good for this concept, with studied strike and inspiration being pretty useful, and extracts being somewhat favorable for a campaign setting where alchemy is by far the most common form of magic. There isn't anything in the Investigator class that out and out discourages heavy armor and a shield (other than the fact that I have to be careful about when to use extracts, since I lack a free hand when fighting), so I dipped a level of Fighter at first level to get heavy armor, shield, and martial weapon proficiency, 10 HP, and Power Attack. So, here's what I came up with at level 6, with 16000 gold:

Sheet

Did I do good with the build? Is there anything I should change to fit my concept of being really good at identifying monsters (and coming up with useful facts outside combat) and fighting, and reasonably good in social situations? Is there some disadvantage to heavy armor and shield as an Investigator that I have missed? How is this build liable to hold up as a primary melee damage dealer?

I have to ask, is this what your sheet at the table would look like? What I mean is, you don't have a line with Inspired Combat and Power Attack already factored in to your attack? That seems bothersome to me.

That said, one attack per round at +9 for 1d8+11 seems weak for a level 6 beatstick. Default level 6 beatstick goes something like +11/+6 for 2d6+16, plus whatever his class abilities are.

Your AC is good, but your saves, at least your good saves should be higher. I don't know how the investigator well, but I think the inspiration boost the attack bonus so your +9 should be ok.

Those stats assume two handed weapon, yes? I find I have a hard time playing two handed weapon warriors unless it's a polearm or a greataxe barb.

I have Studied Combat and Inspiration, but I have to pay double to use Inspiration in combat until 10th level.

...I have never actually considered doing something like that with character sheets.

I think maybe I should stop trying to compare to a primary damage dealer, and see how I compare to a Bard or Inquisitor or standard Investigator instead. A lot of my resources are spent on out of combat abilities, so that's probably more accurate.

If you are going to be a secondary combatant, then that is better, and your AC is really good. Your ability to hit is also more acceptable this way.

Student of War might be a good Prestige, otherwise I dont know what to suggest; the are no real Int martial classes in this game atm, so it's going to be hard to pull one off

I like it, and I would play it. Such a skill monkey. Games are made all the more better by characters such as this.
