A combination of that action economy sink and a statistically superior on the average but extremely bad on the worst case decision by a GM-run pregen Kyra to split up damage between two swarms (since one of them had only 1 hp left, but it's turn was next, so she attacked the one with more health instead) led to Doli the horse dying.
IIRC, the swarm had 3hp, but was still on fire from the last flask. So it had a 5 in 6 chance of snuffing it the following round. And of course when it came time to roll damage for the burn, I rolled a 1. :/

Yeah, that's definitely right. I thought it had more than 1 hp, but I couldn't remember, based on that, why it was silly on average to target the injured swarm but also better in the worst case, so I concluded it must have been lower on hp than I thought; it was indeed because it was still on fire.

Mark,
Will we ever see another player-driven book like the Advanced Class Guide or Advanced Players Guide that expands on options for almost all classes?
On another note, will we ever see anymore alternate classes?
The Ultimate books also have options for a bunch of classes. As far as future books, the currently-announced pair are focused on other topics, though they should be pretty cool.

I used to watch the Adult Swim version with my little brother and it seemed to start at what appeared to be the beginning in terms of plot points. The main plot doesn't really move much, though, so it could have done that at first and then skipped farther in.

Hi Mark! Got a quick question regarding the Duelist's Vambraces.
** spoiler omitted **
The (unchained) rogue in one of my parties wants to know if the Vambrace is intended to work on multiple off-hand attacks?
There's a short thread discussing the question here, but there's no clear consensus.
Huh, yeah, that's pretty weird wording. Once per round is clearly attached to ignoring the penalty, and it has no action cost, but more damningly for the interpretation than it applies on more than one roll, it also has no duration (it says you can do it once per round, but not that it lasts for that round or anything like that). Also, if it was just supposed to ignore the penalty all the time, it could just say that without being worded in such a complicated fashion. I'm going to agree with the tentative majority on that thread that it's meant to apply to one attack per round.

I've got a question for you, as this has come up in one of my games, and I'd like to know your opinion (Not opinion and not a ruling) on it.
I have a player who has an animal companion (Acquired through feats) and would like to have his animal companion speak. He has raised it's intelligence to above three (Using an intelligence headband) to acquire the Gold Nodule Ioun Stone, which allows the user to understand, speak, and write one language. Would you agree that works for an Animal? And also, would you say that his animal is capable of Human-like Sentience?
Thank you for taking the time to read this! And I appreciate any insight you can bring.
This looks like a case of specific over general. Most rules about languages are written for the general majority of characters, who are capable of speech already. The Linguistics skill is an example, as even though it says "you learn to speak and read a new language" this doesn't mean that a creature that can understand languages but can't speak would become able to speak if it put ranks in Linguistics. Abilities that specifically allow non-speaking creatures to speak (like beastspeak) call out that they specifically allow such creatures to speak by naming the animal type in the ability.

Hey Mark, I've asked about this in the rules forums a while back but got contradicting answers. What range can the kineticist's wall infusion appear in and what shape(s) can it take? Every other wall effect gives the exact options for shapes but the infusion only gives the dimensions. Also the infusion says it must appear within 30 feet but does this mean the entire wall must be in 30 feet or just some part of it? By the strictest interpretation that it can only be a vertical plane and the entire wall must be within 30 feet the longer option (120 feet long and 10 feet high versus 60 feet long and 20 feet high) would be useless as the only way to achieve the maximum length of the shortest option is to drop the wall right on top of yourself.
I would say vertical plane, but the range limitation would apply to the center point of the wall, not its edges.

Hi Mark, I want to make sure I am doing mythic spell casting right. I cast a quickened spell on my turn then a spell with my standard action then on my opponents turn I cast another mythic spell that says that I can cast it with an immediate action.
Is this right? Can I use a metamagic rod on the second spell?
In general, you can cast a quickened spell, standard spell, and then after your turn an immediate spell, yes. Though you then wouldn't have your swift action on your next turn. In terms of metamagic rods, you would need the rod in hand, but it doesn't appear to change your action economy unless you're a sorcerer (in which case, you wouldn't be able to use it on an immediate action spell because it becomes a full-round action).

Mark, does an amulet of undetectable alignment mask ones aura if you have an overwhelming evil aura, My character is an 16th level inquisitor mythic 1 Hierophant custom devil that is lawful evil.
I'm not aware of that magic item in particular, but the spell effect of undetectable alignment should indeed do the trick of masking your overwhelming aura.

Hey Mark, so this may have been asked before and I may have missed it but with the aether kineticist what influenced the decision to make the force blast composite blast deal damage as a simple blast?
Also was the decision really necessary, 2 burn seems much steeper (not completely unreasonable but still quite steep) price when it's only half the damage of everything else at its tier, is the fact that force damage is hard to mitigate really worth that much?
I would love to hear your opinion's on the matter and get your perspective if you don't mind.
Good question! It's part of a complex equation involving the five elements and their areas of focus. It's certainly true that force is an extremely advantageous damage type (1 creature in the game with resistance or immunity, and that the aether elemental that came out after OA and is tied to the element, plus it deals full damage to incorporeal things), which is part of it. To get the big damage, you can use disintegrating infusion. The goal would be to make all elements awesome in their own ways and distinct enough to feel like you're at one with a different element, rather than just a palette swap of the other elements. I've enjoyed the fact that different people have different favorite elements or elements they think are the best (I worried that I might have missed something that made one element problematically ahead), though one thing I've noticed is that aether has tended to be claimed as "best element" a little more often that the others, so in that sense it seems like having the composite blast being more of a reliability/versatility option than a more-powerful higher-damage option like blue flame blast seems to have in retrospect been a good thing for element balance overall.

Hi Mark,
I posted some random questions about how Delay Kinetic Blast works here but I think the timing of the post was bad and it got buried while everyone was off at PaizoCon/Roll20Con.
If you have any answers to those questions, I would be highly appreciative :D Thanks!
I tend to agree with you and Gary Bush on the second and third; blade/whip/fist don't work, and you could hit yourself assuming you were in the right spot to do so.
As to ride, I could see it not working (most likely) or working only if you are still at the origin point (close but not quite as compelling), but certainly not otherwise. The reason it seems like it wouldn't work is that in essence you're setting up the energy flow and elemental matter ahead of time (the magic is there and dispellable), so you couldn't have been sending yourself along with it; it's out of your hands. If a GM running my kineticist was to rule that you could do it from the origin point (but presumably only if you were conscious and capable of choosing to do so), I certainly wouldn't object to that either.

Hm. This one definitively doesn't start at the beginning. It starts at a semi-arbitrary point and just kind of expects you to figure out who everyone is along the way. The Detective Conan/Case Closed wiki has been invaluable in helping me figure out who is who. That said, it also starts with a few teaser/mild cases to let you get used to the group dynamics, so it's fairly reasonable. Still, I'd rather have seen the beginning, even if the art and animation has changed!
Regardless, each individual case is compelling - they have a masterful sense of using environments and clever tricks to generate mystery plots. For this reason alone, I find it worth watching, when I can.
(Though, seriously, at 750+ cases solved, more than a year or two needs to have passed. At least now, a few mysteries are being strung out over multiple episodes. I don't know if that was normal in the older one, but in this segment, it's pretty common. Also, a recent case was actually a flashback to his adult self, and though a different one I just saw took place over multiple days, it, unlike most such, could reasonably have happened simultaneously with a few other cases. Still pushing it with that timeframe, though.)

It's either my favorite or second favorite d100-based system (the other being Word Mill's Mythic Roleplaying.) Combat is fast-paced and enjoyable, character creation is a lot more flexible than in games like Pathfinder. I particularly like Legend's action economy system (I doubt it could be retro-fitted into Pathfinder as it stands, but if you're ever designing a game from the ground up, I think Legend's action system is a good model to start from.) If you're curious, the core rules are only $1 on OBS (but then you'd actually need to find time to read the rules and then try playing with them, which is always a thing to be weary of:D).

4) I know you've done some work with third party publishers in the past; is there any third party material you haven't worked on that you enjoy, either in general, or for your own games?
1) Hmm...as always, hard to pick favorite classes. I think I'll go with Unchained monk, ranger, and avenger vigilante.
2) A few pages back, Dragon78 asked for my favorite classes overall, and the ones I picked using my semi-arbitrary metric turned out to all be 3/4 BAB, though there were 6. Those were the three I worked on the most, kineticist, medium, and vigilante (non-avenger), and the three I played in full APs, alchemist, bard, and summoner.
3) I don't make those kinds of decisions, so what I think would be an interesting choice probably wouldn't give you a clear picture anyway (though in the case of Unchained, other than the class selection, even though I was hired after the outline was ordered and text came in, everybody was super flexible in humoring the newbie when I kept asking to add in sections like Automatic Bonus Progression, Dynamic Magic Item Creation, Removing Alignment, and Unchained Poisons and Diseases). I honestly would pick the fighter, which I also suggested last time around. I think that now even moreso than at the time of Unchained, it's sitting in a situation like the monk was back then where books have come out that give extremely-better-than-what-you-give-up trade-offs as an attempted assistance in order to compensate for the starting chassis (much like the monk archetypes that did this), so it would be better to just have a class with an adjusted chassis that does everything we want on its own so that everyone can play with that character, not just those who located and selected the extremely-better-than-what-you-give-up trade-offs by combing a variety of sources. So pretty much like the Unchained monk in that regard.
4) I've enjoyed reading 3pp stuff in the past, though since working here, I've stopped doing so in case I'm ever working on something similar myself. I probably still have never actually used 3pp in my own games with a frequency that reflects how much I like them simply because I always homebrewed a lot of my own stuff, like the time back in 3.5 I wrote over 100 new classes for a home campaign. However, I definitely used Green Ronin's Advanced Bestiary and Silverthorne Games's Book of Templates a bunch in 3.5 for templates, and I've used Legendary Games plug-in mini-adventures for my slow-XP Jade Regent game. Rules-independent (or mostly independent) books like Frog God's Tome of Adventure Design with all its fun charts or Expeditious Retreat's Magical Medieval Society with its analysis of social and economic situations in a magical world are also generally fun and useful even for someone who homebrews the rules part most of the time. There's more too, but I wanted to limit myself to what I could think of off the top of my head without looking at my shelves or downloads at all.

a) Thank you for the answer.
b) Do you know of any items that allow an animal companion to speak continuously?
c) Failing the above, are there any other options for communication between the character and his companion? Assuming the companion can learn Common but not speak it, can the character and companion not work out a series of (for example) barks that the animal can speak, and the character can understand but not speak? Failing all of that, can an intelligent companion with a high enough bluff get the gist of what they are trying to convey across?
d) You didn't touch on the question about sentience. Is sentience an entirely separate thing from mental abilities, or is it directly tied to them? Is a 10 Cha, 10 Int, 10 Wis wolf who has been properly socialized as sentient as a 10 Cha, 10 Int, 10 Wis human (Or atleast in the same ballpark)? A 7/7/7 human? Or utterly incomparable?
Thanks again.

If you could make a gestalt character for a game, what would you make?
I'd probably make a character from one of the classes I mentioned in my previous post (they were all balanced with gestalt characters), but that's because I've had those on the brain lately, as dusting off that old setting is in contention for my group now that Jade Regent is over. Perhaps a Runemaiden (somewhat reminiscent to wizard//paladin but with weird runes and a bunch of other different abilities). They're pretty cool, though they're also pretty MAD. So I guess it depends on the ability score generation, and on what I roll if it's roll-based. I could play something like a Siren or a Dragonlord if I wanted to be based on fewer ability scores.

Yeah, Pathfinder's action economy is pretty rigid in many ways, with major drop-offs between certain action types that aren't necessarily intuitive either. The Unchained action economy is a lot more elegant, though admittedly it isn't the action economy around which the game was balanced, so it changes a lot of things, especially balance-related.
Anyway, sounds cool. In contrast to, as mentioned above, not really reading Pathfinder 3pp books nowadays, much as I'd like to, in case I wind up having a similar assignment, I've tried to look at more other games to learn more about game design in general, rather than our particular microcosm in Pathfinder.

Circlet of speaking from Animal Archive should do the trick. It looks like your group allows Player Companions from the use of the ioun stone, so the source should be fine.
As to the rest, there's a blog FAQ about it. It's a little hard to explain why the things you suggest wouldn't work if the animal understands a language, but the blog states that animals increasing their Intelligence still need to be handled with Handle Animal anyway. It's a blog FAQ I've never truly groked in terms of how it's explained.

The rules say they "see through your disguise", rather than saying something like "notice your disguise" which seems like it would allow them to recognize you (assuming they would recognize you without a disguise), and certainly the rules for various other things seem to work along that line of reasoning. In the case of literal transformations, it seems unlikely that this extends to somehow true seeing the transformed creature, so I'd probably describe it as recognizing things like distinctive idioms or body language, which sounds really hard to pull off, and thus in line with the massive bonus the disguiser receives.

A GM should, however, make exceptions in the case of how such an intelligent animal might react in absence of instructions. It might not know to unlock a door to escape a burning building—as that's a fact that's learned over time and experience—but a smart animal might have a better chance of finding a way out.
So if I am reading that right, an animal definitely gains more independent decision making, reasoning, and problem solving skills as it increases in intelligence (which may bring it closer to sentience), correct? At which point it can generally be trusted to act sensibly, and handle animal only becomes a problem if it is a) doing something you don't want it to do, or b) isn't doing something you want it to do?

Mr. Mark Seifter,
What is your favorite corruption from Horror Adventures?
Also, would stacking the mythic tiers with the Hellbound corruption allow for a player slowly turning into a Malbranche or new Archduke of Hell?
I don't know; I tend to think of the corruptions together to the point that it's hard to pick out one. This time, I think I'll pick Accursed since it's alphabetically first, so it winds up being the first one I think of when I think of the section.
You could definitely stack mythic tiers with the Hellbound corruption for that kind of character. I suppose most characters seeking to become a malebranche would probably be at the final catalyst stage already.

It seems, especially from later commentary in the thread that it isn't a replacement for using Handle Animal in combat to get it to do things like attack, though. I'm not the right person to ask on this one. Then again, I'd say run it however works best for your home group!

With stats like those, I think I could definitely get behind a Runemaiden. Since it's based off the 3.5 classes, I'll need all 6 ability scores at least a little unless I converted it to Pathfinder and removed the Wis dependency, in which case that could be the 10 pretty easily.

Are you sure it doesn't start at the beginning? When I watched it on Adult Swim something like 13 years ago, it started off with the main protagonist in his teenage years solving crimes while a narrator explained who other characters were. Specifically, the crime I recAll was the death of a person in a carnival/horror ride. Then it goes on to show him getting involved with another r case and getting turned into a child.
Is that not the beginning of the anime? If not, then I don't think anyone picked up on it. It was extremely easy for me to follow the plot along as a young teen. My siblings and I all used to love watching it, and my youngest sibling is 8 years younger.

Netflix starts off with a case where Conan (already shrunk) and the kids go to a new kid's apartment, and a murder happens next store; side-plot being two officers are (apparently?) in a relationship and/or married (I still don't know, exactly) with a pregnancy thing going on.
The Title of "S1E1" (as Netflix calls it) is Metropolitan Police Love Story Part 9 or something. I'd looked it up on Wikipedia. It was episode seven hundred something. As of S1E31, they have not gone back to the beginning to show what happened, though there was a "pre-Conan" flashback show (entirely new show talking about him before he was Conan), and just now, it's starting a five-part mystery involving a guy from The Organization relating to... something Conan was involved in - seemingly an old episode, but one that it did not show us in this selection of episodes.
So while Adult Swim might have started at the beginning (I dunno; as I said, I didn't watch it, though it certainly sounds like it), Netflix definitely doesn't. Sorry if it wasn't clear which I was talking about before.
As a weird aside: I only see the subtitle version available for Netflix, but... two of the English voice actors are mentioned on the title page. I can't figure a way to switch between sub and dub, but that's kind of a strange inclusion.

I'll go ahead and put the link here.
The title, as per Netflix, is "Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story: Confessions" (episode 748 - I mis-typed, before that it was 749).
Going by that same Wikipedia article, every episode since then has, one-for-one followed from that episode right up to episode 779 "The Scarlet Prologue" noted as "S1E32" - and continues beyond that (though S795-aka-S1E49 has it's name significantly changed) and ends at episode 799, called S1E52 by Netflix (dropping off the last three episodes of Season 24).
So... the Netflix version starts about a quarter of the way into Season 24 and ends three episodes before the end of Season 24. Definitely doesn't start at the beginning or do time-skips.
I'm guessing that's not the Adult Swim version in this case.
Anyway, all that aside, It's a really good series, because each episode is compelling enough to make you want to stay still and watch it - the mysteries are interesting (and I've even solved a few!), but I don't think Mark has the time to seriously watch it, soooooooo... I'd imagine he'd prefer if I stopped cluttering his thread. Sorry, Mark!
(Though if you're in the mood for a compelling mystery, I recommend grabbing an episode on occasion!)

if you look into a crystal ball today, do you see a FAQ in the near future?
Our FAQ slot for today wound up being for a highly-asked no FAQ required question about whether the effective size increase FAQ applies in a specific instance. So simultaneously yes and no, depending on if you count the FAQ discussion slot or whether it winds up as a FAQ.

What character that you've played was the most fun for you, personally?
Hmm...I don't know. Before PFRPG came out, I actually had rarely been able to play in a long-term campaign, so for long-term characters, I'm probably limited to Alcyone, my halfling archivist from Shackled City, Elysiel, my tiefling summoner from Council of Thieves, Rell, my elven alchemist from Curse of the Crimson Throne, or Edward, my half-elf bard from Kingmaker. Probably Elysiel or Edward because Shackled City died in the middle and Curse has had a lot of hiatuses.

Mark, on the topic of Variant Channeling, can you only take them if the variant is in your deity's domain/portfolio? Or if you could conceivably explain how it would tie into your deity?
(For example, Calistria is all about lust, and alcohol is often a component in seduction and the like, so could a cleric of Calistria take the Ale/Wine variant?)
EDIT: What if you have the Separatist archetype?
On the other hand, could a cleric who follows instead a philosophy choose any that are in accordance with their philosophy?
EDIT 2: How about someone like an Oracle of Life with Channel?
Thanks!

The intro text indicates that it would need to be in the deity's portfolio, also using terms like "a fire deity". While I would call Cayden an "ale deity", I don't think it would be accurate to call Calistria an "ale deity" or a "wine deity". She'd presumably use Beauty/Love/Lust and Revenge/Vengeance.
Separatist grants you a specific benefit of having an off-deity domain, but it doesn't say it changes the deity's portfolio or granted powers for any other purpose, so I would think no there too.
The text actually later mentions that if you don't serve a deity, you don't get variant channeling (though serving multiple deities, like an oracle who serves all the deities listed as thematic in their mystery, is mentioned as OK; at that point, I'd imagine you'd pick any of those).

Wikipedia says Funimation has the rights, so it's possible Funimation have it on their site. Wikipedia says they began streaming in 2013.

Sorry to keep asking dumb rules questions but this one is really nagging me. The Heavy wrist launcher is a cool weapon and I keep trying to come up with character ideas centered around them, so...
Are wrist launchers crossbows? Can I take crossbow mastery with them? Rapid Reload? You wear the on your wrist, so can you have a wrist launcher and hold a weapon in that same hand? If you do can you still attack with that wrist launcher? Can you attack with both in the same round? Since it's on your forearm rather than in your hand does it interfere with your hand or wrist magic item slots? What about shields?

Mr. Mark Seifter,
How would the deep one corruption compare to taking the aberrant heritage feats from the 3.5 book Lords of Madness? Besides the fact that the corruption system wouldn't cost you feats.
Also, would the hive corruption work well with the Kiliks, Joiners, and specifically a character like Vector Hyllus from Star Wars?
