Why is Ghost Touch armor so expensive?

Ghost Touch is a +3 armor enhancement. Does it do anything else other than protect against touch attacks from incorporeal creatures? That is great when you run up against ghosts or shadows, but highly situational. I think it is way over priced. For that money I would expect it to protect against all touch attacks (corporeal or incorporeal). Am I better off just getting a straight +3 that will protect against the vast majority of attacks?

That's for you to decide depending on the opponents you expect to face.

Personally, in the campaigns I've played in, I didn't bother with Ghost Touch Armor. I guess if you are in a campaign where you know you are going to run into alot of incorporeal opponents, it might be a good buy.

On the other hand, if you are incorporeal, it's a pretty good buy, even at +3, because it lets you wear armor and get the benefit thereof.

When it's useful, it's really useful. I dont think it can reasonably be any cheaper with the impact it has when it does apply.

But then, in many cases mage armor or Death Ward are equally (or more) effective.

So I think it's one of these 'niche or NPC focused' enchants.

Yeah it's very situational. Depends on how often you plan to fight incorporeal things.

I was once in a high level game where the GM was fond of "20 specters pop out of the walls!" encounters. After a few times of the whole party taking 6-10 negative levels during the surprise round, you better bet I had both an armor and shield with ghost touch. Shut that "tactic" right down.

Was also very amusing when we rotated GMs and the new GM put together an encounter with ghost dragons that she thought would be super tough, then realized the whole party had ghost touch equipment only after the fight began.

It's due to price models from AD&D before there was a descrete enchantment bonus system for things beyond +s to hit and damage. The anti-ghost gear back then was expensive as ghosts and wraiths were high level opponents. Sadly they didn't take into account how the modular enhancement system would change things when they ported it over to 3rd edition. So it's basically the same reason ogre mages were so woefully underpowered in 3.5 and why vorpal and speed are so overpriced.

I don't think so. And yeah - highly situational. A simpler solution is to get your mage to give you mage armour. Won't stack with armour, but it applies to incorporeal touch attacks.

I think there's someone who underestimates the value of an instant-kill ability and on demand haste.
