Alpha Torrent

Please tell me that when you release the Alpha client(s) to Alpha members that you will release it as some sort of torrent download - whether through a downloader/patcher client program (home-grown or otherwise), or just through "normal" torrent avenues (if you don't care who gets their hands on it - doubtful considering no NDA)?

In my opinion, this could:
1) drastically reduce the amount of outbound traffic you suffer,
2) reduce overall download time for Alpha members as a whole,
3) practically ensure that the client gets to all Alphas, even if the original download is taken down for a short bit (e.g. technical issues), and
4) potentially drastically reduce download time for some Alpha members.

At worst:
a) you will have as much outbound traffic as you would have if every Alpha downloaded it statically from you once each, and
b) some clients may not have access to torrents due to heightened security policies restricting their internet connections (a static download link could still be provided).

Just a thought, but I would really like to hear that the Goblinworks team has at least put some thought into this - especially considering that we Alpha members will be downloading the whole client at least a few times throughout the Alpha.

I am very much in favor of this for all client releases before the auto patcher is implemented as I like to torment myself by having the game client on my PC long before I am able to log into the game.

And a sarcastic as this may sound this is actually a real thing that I do. It usually has the added benefit of being able to log in the instant my account is able to do so without waiting for the download to finish but this point is of course moot without an auto patcher.

I'm not invested in torrent but am not averse to its use.

I do have a worry that peer-to-peer may open holes in a firewall.

Normal torrent avenues is a bad idea for a MMO. All it takes is one creative individual to put a keylogger into the files and upload their version with a similar name as what goblinworks used and people will be screaming and wailing.

If they have their own launcher that uses peer to peer like Blizzard does with WoW, it shouldn't cause any issues though.

Your spell fizzles. There is no additional information to be gained about torrent downloads by summing Nihimon.

It is my understanding of torrents/peer-to-peer that the hash/signature would be changed. If the end-user is paying attention, then there'd be no risk.

But regardless, yes, a custom client for peer-to-peer would pretty much eliminate any chance of this (e.g. it checks those signatures for you so the end-user doesn't need worry).

Thank you, Nihimon for your appearance. Here's a cookie.

P.S.: I'm not a huge fan of "torrenting everything" - I respect peoples' property. I just think that this sort of thing is "the way to go" when distributing large files like this to the masses - just as Crash_00 pointed out with Blizzard (and other companies doing the same).

Goblin Squad Member

I agree, there wouldn't be risk if people pay attention, but that isn't as common of a state as it should be. Just look at the kind of scams that plague the player bases of other MMOs. WoW players get keylogged constantly for replying to emails with addresses like b1izzard@gmail.com.

One of the philosophies of security is that the weakest element is the human element. Software development has a similar philosophy involving the human operator.

Sweet God of Mussarela. Too much food in a torrent post. I'm hungry now ¬¬

Well, torrent-like download native or real-torrent download using BitTorent?

I guess the porpuse now is launching the game. After thw game is playable by all us, we can implement things while they will be needed. My opinion is that is just a regular torrent don't need time from our precious programmers ;)

Native torrent like download will be a trouble for after (not alpha), but it's a nice idea to have such an opition (in my experiences, my location and my "Murphy's Law", torrent always been slower than direct download. ¬¬ )

Exactly. No need to write a custom downloader client until later. For now, just release a .torrent and have one or two servers seed it (that would already be offering the "normal" download anyway). Tell the Alpha people about the regular download, and give the option to "advanced users" to download the .torrent.

Magnet links. How do they work?

Goblin Squad Member

I'm not 100% sure on the specifics (I haven't done a whole lot of research into the details). But when you have a good torrent client installed, magnet links, when clicked, will start your torrent client and start the torrent automatically (well, with a prompt for details first). No need to download/open a .torrent file - it just skips that step is all.

It was a joke. See this video (with explicit lyrics) to be in on the joke.

(thanks for explaining the reference so that I realize how dumb I sound!) ;)

And now, I've been educated. :P

Looks fine to me. That 'song', and possibly ICP in general, is a rather major fail.

Goblin Squad Member

With the entire game being 3 gigs, I don't think a torrent is necessary, and the subset of people using it will probably be too small to make an impact when it would help.

If the alpha crowd was ever to get too large to handle, it would be in late alpha when there will be an auto-patch client and GW should be putting together the EE server and better internet hookup for more bandwidth.

It wouldn't be a big deal for each person downloading, no. But get ~200 people downloading from the same source on the same day (likely) - might cause some "availability" issues. ;)

We'll see. It really ultimately depends on their bandwidth availability (or the bandwidth availability of whichever host they use).

This is so much better than ICP. There's a special bonus for 90s kids if you watch to the end.
