Weapon of Choice

Advice

Lat night in our game a tournament was held where they winner receives a +2 weapon of choice or the equivalent in gold. (we are 7th level and under geared)

I won! I am a lawful good reach Cleric. Most of our enemies in this world are neutral actually (a lot of the plot revolves around an underground power struggle between the church of Iomedae (us) and the church of Pharasma (NPCs).

So... if you were me what weapon would you choose? Or would you take the gold and spend it on other stuff? I don't have any great gear other than a cloak of resist +1.

Thanks all!

I would take it for sure if they offered me something like a Greenwood Longspear +1 Keen. I would take the money if it had to be a +2 Longspear.

It depends on my character, and the rules set. I like claws and tentacles as weapons, so I might want an Amulet of Mighty Fists, or even a combination Mighty Fists/Natural Armor.

I have a character build that calls for Thunder and Fang, so an Adamantine Klar or a Mithril Earthbreaker.

I have a dream set of enchantments. I like Shatterspike and Maul of the Titans to go with Great Sunder.

Normally I would say longsword... since it's your goddess' favored weapon, but a longspear would be the optimal choice I believe. And if you don't currently have any magical weapons, take the offered weapon over the gold. You'll need magical weapons if you run into DR.

I am operating on the assumption that the OP is playing a Cleric of Iomedae with Combat Reflexes who uses a longspear and will be using the spell Greater Magic Weapon soon if not already. If any of that isn't true my advice will change too. When they offered the money did they mean 8,000 or 4,000? If it was 8,000 you are probably just as good if not better to take the money and buy stuff.

Well, unless you have access to other weapon choices (dip in a martial class, martial/exotic weapon proficiency), it would appear that you are pretty much stuck choosing a +2 longspear.

But for about the same price (8,305 gp), you could get a belt of +2 strength and a headband of +2 wisdom. With the belt, while you would miss out of an extra +1 to hit, you might still get the +2 to damage since you are 2handing and if the +2 to strength ends up getting you an even modifier. And adding more wisdom is always welcome, particularly if you ended up putting a lot into strength.

And heck, even after buying all that, you would still have 305 gp left over. Depending on your equipment, that could be a nice replacement of an armor (or upgrade since you could use the money to prepare masterwork transformation), a potion, or maybe some minor magical item.

For 8,000 you could buy a Mithril Breastplate +1 and a Greenwood Longspear +1. You can get good armor that you can upgrade later and get a good enough weapon that you can upgrade later.

You could go with Darkwood or one of the metals for the spear. I never know what special material to make weapons out of. I never guess right when I buy them, maybe others who have better luck could give better suggestions?

Grand Lodge

A +1 Spell Storing Long Spear

It is basically 1 extra 3rd level or lower spell a day.
Also a Quickened De-buff on hit.

You have access to Magic Vestment and Greater Magic Weapon. So you need only abilities added to your gear.

This is the weapon of choice you should take.

I definitely like Spell Storing. Conductive is a possibility depending on your domains.

Thanks everybody.

I should have stated that I use a dwarven longaxe as my weapon (10' reach, D12 Damage).

Can somebody help me understand why greenwood is a good choice?

Silver Crusade

What you really want is a +1 Grayflame enchanted dwarven longaxe. Its only useful to Clerics with at least 3d6 channels. For you, though, it's great! At 8th level you can increase the bonus to +2 (for free) with Greater Magic Weapon.

Your first action in most combats will be a Swift Action channel to charge your grayflame weapon. At 8th level Greater Magic Weapon makes your axe +2. Charged grayflame increases this to +3, +1d6 extra damage, and penetrates DR/Good. For the cost of a +2 weapon and a 4th level spell slot your weapon will be +3 to hit for an extra +1d6+3 damage and penetrates Evil Outsider DR.

Thanks Magda - I was thinking about Grayflame.

But is it better to have that for 16 rounds a day or just a basic flaming / shocking / Icy D6 on all attacks, all day?

I only suggested Greenwood before because you weren't paying for it. I probably wouldn't spend the money on it but it does give a minor benefit.

Are you fighting creatures with Evil or Cold Iron Damage reduction? If so Grayflame. Are you likely to be spending 20 or more rounds in combat each day against non DR foes? Then Corrosive. (Acid>Fire/Cold/Electric)

Why is corrosive better than all the others? Just bc less things have Acid Resist?

Christopher Walken was awesome in that video!

Pretty much. Acid is the least resisted/immune of the four major energy types.

I'd definitely take the Dancing Christopher Walken +2 over any other possible prize.

Even with pants up to his armpits, he's got moves.
