It's distributed however you want. You may divide the experience by four. You may consult this Table: Experience Point Awards. You may award experience by session, by encounter, by section of the book. You may forgo experience altogether and tell your party when they level (per the recommended times in the book).

Personally (for my group going through Jade Regent), I consult the chart I linked to for my party of four-ish. I award experience after the party meets, i.e. after every Wednesday night session. I level them after they rest for the evening, and I award experience for only what the party faces. I do not give additional experience for "doing more damage" than the next guy or being the "only one with trap-finding" because that's unfair, additional book keeping, and (in my opinion) antiquated.

So if my party faces, in one encounter, two things worth 1600 XP and, later that same session, four things worth 3200 xp, I see that:
1600 (2) xp = 400 (2) xp per player
3200 (4) xp = 800 (4) xp per player

= 4000 xp per player for the given session

Raptortamer,

Also, if a CR1 Encounter says 400 xp, then the amount of xp 4 players earned is 400/4 = 100xp/player.

I also tend to give bonuses to XP after sessions depending on play. If it was a great session with alot of good roleplay and the party of 5 earned 10,000 xp then I'll bump it up to 15k and award everyone 3k experience.

downerbeautiful is right, it is distributed however you want, but be mindful of the progression. Particularly in Pathfinder it's not required to speed through the first 3 levels, there's some good content and RP at those low levels.

also especially if your running an ap, its often simpler to hand wave xp points and just tell the players at appropriate points to level up. The advancement notes in the intro to the adventure are helpful guides.
