Background:
Garra stood in front of the Pactmasters, truly afraid for the first time in years. She'd weathered storm after hellish storm since being sold in Absolom for a few coppers, but an audience before the Pactmasters, especially with one such as herself left one uneasy at the best of times.

These times were certainly not the best.

"Ah, welcome Garra. We have heard much about you." said one of the men in silken robes and dripping with jewels. His teeth gleamed in the smoky light as he spoke. She froze, paralyzed by terror as she tried to think of what to do while not focusing on why she was here in the first place.

She failed. Miserably.

"Yes much indeed. You are strong, and exotic in your own way. Many men have longed to have you in their beds for but a moment of passion. Imagine our surprise when we found that you still have your virtue intact!"

Her cheeks blazed crimson, and any response she wished to utter died as she squeaked in embarrassment.

Not that what she currently wore helped at all. They were slaves' clothes, just modest enough to avoid unnecessarily offending delicate sensibilities, but making sure to show off what they had offer.

Garra was suddenly very aware of a dozen stares in her direction. Tracing the curves of her body and drinking in the easily burnt paleness of her skin.

"Ah yes, but then again, you killed your former master to make sure of that, didn't you?" the man's voice became a thin cold dagger and Garra could do nothing but squirm as the judgement hovered on the tip of his tongue. She'd never deny that she killed the man. He was lech, and he'd been drunk, but she didn't mean to. Just to keep him from pawing her like some cheap whore.

"Yes, a rich merchant in his prime. A young man just beginning to live, and you killed him."

"I-it was an accident! I-i d-d-didn't mean to kill anyone!" she blurted out, only to be sent to her knees as a whip cracked in the bared small of her back.

"Ah but you did, and the penalty for that is death."

This was it. The moment she had dreaded since that night almost a week ago. In but a few short moments, she'd be dead. Her life-blood soaking into the floor in some dark dungeon.

"But there is another way to erase your sin."

Her mind screamed, it screamed for her to do something, to prove the word had not just gone mad.

Her eyes wide in shock stayed on the floor in front of the man's shoes. Her voice had left her.

"Yes, you see there is a town, Kelmarane, that we have recently reclaimed. But there are whispers, whispers of something that have us concerned. You will be granted your freedom, if you aid the heroes there in their quest. We believe that this will fit one of your... talents. Surely a gladiatrix from the pits will have no issue with a few gnolls. Once that is done, your crimes will be forgiven, and you may walk from here, free."

She was stunned, stunned for almost too long, but when she could speak again, she hastily accepted the offer.

Appearance:
Garra possesses the fair skin and dark hair of her Hallit heritage (which she has no clue since her first memories are of the orphanage whose owner later sold her into slavery.) She barely tops five and a quarter feet, but no one would mistake her for an easy mark. Her muscles are toned and hard from years spent in the ring. Her scars are remarkably few, the only notable one being the one that runs down her left cheek. Her eyes are deep sapphire that shows a wisdom that is at odds with what most think of her.

Personality:
When out of a fight or without something to cook, Garra is out of her element, and she is very aware of it. She doesn't know how to interact with most people and that leaves her looking, and feeling, like a dumb fool. Her nature is as blunt as the shield she uses and the way she often puts her foot in her mouth makes her feel even more like an idiot. and leading others to think her slow.

My submission:

Reta mem Sota -The Prince of Nothing

Background:
Reta mem Sota was born a Badawi prince. Fierce and prideful, his people raided and fought with their nomadic neighbours, and traded and intermingled with the Janni of the deepest desert. They brooked no insult and took their fill from those weaker than them, living life in the harsh sand swept plains of southern Katepesh to the fullest. And so it was until Reta’s people met ones stronger and fiercer than they. In a rocky canyon they were ambushed and overrun by gnolls in greater number than had ever gathered before.

Left for dead Reta Reta wander the desert alone for many moons. He would have died many times, but the spirits of the sands called to him on the scorching wind and taught him their secrets– the secrets of the viper, the vulture, and the scorpion.

For a time the proud Badawi prince was fuelled by vengeance. He hunted gnolls and exacted much blood for his fallen people, learning in time that the gnolls who murdered his people were led by the one who became known as the Carrion King.

But along the way, the “Prince of Nothing,” as he mockingly referred to himself, grew weary of vengeance. The blistering sun burned the hate from him. The blowing sand scoured away his boastful ways, and the cold nights of solitude cooled his wrath.

The trail of the Carrion King eventually led him to the ruins of Kelmarane, the trail went cold. Then people returned to the town and he learned that the quarry he had been half heartedly following for so long was dead. Unsure of what to do with his life next. Reta marches into the town, ending his long isolation to thank those who brought low the Carrion King and pledge to them his loyalty in return for the peace their deeds had brought his people.

Party Role:
Desert Druid 6. Reta will be a mobile wild shaping melee fighter who can support the party through buffing, occasional summons, and some healing. Though an animal companion would serve to further bolster front line combat, I’m quite willing to take the desert domain instead if the existing players/GM prefer not to deal with extra pets. Full crunch available if selected or upon request.

Thanks!

Due to a few unexpected things last night, I wasn't able to build a character -- and, further, looking at the party's needs, I think (increasingly) that the original idea for the Varisian (as much fun as it would be) wouldn't quite be the best fit -- as the party seems to want for a secondary melee sort of character [I got so far afield trying to make the concept work that I had a Half-Elven Cav 2 (Emissary)/Cleric (Varisian Pilgrim) 4 concept roughed out... which I liked, to be fair, but still...]

So, the new concept is somewhat less flashy -- a straight up battle-cleric of Cayden Cailean [Travel (Exploration) and Strength (Ferocity)] -- but I won't have the character ready likely for 4-6 hours at best -- and since I know there was an intent to select today, I totally understand if you'd rather not wait.

The list ( let me know if I missed anyone):

Void Dragon- Hector Starwatcher- Oracle 6
Wack-a-Rogue- Abdul al'Akbar- Pal 2/ Oracle 4
Vanulf Wolfson- Nasir ibn Al'Said- Paladin 6
Adam Warnock- Garra- Fighter 6
TarkXT- Aliyeh- Clr or Inquisitor 6
Chainmail- Luther Lightblade- Clr
Alistus- Ftr
Dread Pirate Hurley- Druid?
Iron Desk- Reta mem Sota- Drd 6
Tilnar- Clr+?

I'm really appreciating the backgrounds. Very creative and thank you for actually making them fit the setting.

Nominations will be open until tonight and we should be able to decide quickly thereafter.

Yeh, and we only have space for two more applications, because my selection device (aka a dartboard) only has twelve sections.

Hmmm, maybe it is not a dartboard, I wonder what the short and the long pointy things are for that rotate about.

If you put it outside and analyze the shadow the sun makes, it'll tell you the time. What time, you ask? I have no idea. :-(

Tonight, I can manage. Maybe I'll do what Tark did and build both characters anyway. :)

Yeh, right. Someone else told me to try that. I sat there and listened all day and the damn thing didn't tell me anything.

Did you clear your mind? It might be telepathic.

Clear my mind? First of all, I am a fighter, like I have a mind. And, second, the Carrion King sliced my head off. I am pretty sure my mind cleared out of my neck a few moments later as my head went bouncing across the floor.

Well with a clear mind I think you will at least get ahead in life.

I've got the character's crunch available -- and the base of the story forming in my mind (with some point-form there) -- I'll flesh that out over the next few hours, but people can look it over, at least.

She just has to be careful not to lose her head and keep her chin above her shoulders.

Through hard work, and dedication I think she will pull herself together.

Na, that is why I have a handy haversack. Just keep the head in there, and if I need it, which with a fighter is rare, I can always retrieve it as a move action.

Ok, I got the description up but somehow the history ate itself (I thought I was being good and saving after each paragraph, but apparently, I was previewing, and ... well, I'm feeling a mite depressed about that.)

I've put in the high-points in point form for now -- I can flesh it out later, but that's the general backstory -- and feel free to look at other aliases -- I'm usually pretty good at turning plot points into story, really. :)

Lol - been there, done that.

OK, Final tally:

Void Dragon- Hector Starwatcher- Oracle 6
Wack-a-Rogue- Abdul al'Akbar- Pal 2/ Oracle 4
Vanulf Wolfson- Nasir ibn Al'Said- Paladin 6
Adam Warnock- Garra- Fighter 6
TarkXT- Aliyeh- Clr or Inquisitor 6
Chainmail- Luther Lightblade- Clr?
Alistus- Ftr?
Dread Pirate Hurley- Druid?
Iron Desk- Reta mem Sota- Drd 6
Tilnar- Varkata- Clr 6

I'm going to close out the candidate process here and pow-wow with my players for a final decision in the next day or two. Thanks for all the great entries!

I'm not going to have time to put together a full submission, so I'll need to withdraw. Good luck everybody!

Alright, it looks to be a split decision. Some preferred the meaty/mendy mix of the paladin and others were intrigued by the exotic half-orc cleric. The GM is a little concerned that a party of 5 may give the advantage to the players which is something he can't stand!

but there you are.

Nasir and Tilnar- Would you care to join us at the Casbah?

here

Thanks everyone for the interesting candidates!

Ah well, I guess I'll be finishing my read through for the enjoyment then.

Thanks all for your consideration.

Happy gaming!
