adding cards to deck

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Sovereign Court

can I add cards from the box between scenarios to replace cards I have?

Say I want a specific ally from the basic set, can I just replace the ally the is supposed to be a part of the basic set up for a PC?

Does that make sense?

Not between scenarios no. The only time you can go to the box is if at the end of a scenario you are short a card to rebuild your deck and no character that finished the scenario with you has an extra card of that type.

After each scenario, you must rebuild your character deck. Start by combining your discard pile with your hand, your character deck, and any cards you buried under your character card; you may then freely trade cards with other players. Your deck must end up meeting the Cards List requirements on your character card, along with any deck adjustments on your role card, if you have one...If you can’t construct a valid deck from the cards your group has available because you don’t have enough of certain card types, choose the extra cards you need from the box, choosing only cards with the Basic trait.

Before you start a character, you can build your own deck instead of using the recommended deck list. Just choose only cards with the Basic trait. But once you start adventuring you build your deck from the cards you acquire and can't swap what you've got for something in the box.

That means if you have to banish a card (say to close a location) you have to wrestle with the fact that you might not be seeing that card again for a while.

Interesting. When we played with the Paizo peeps at BGG.con, we were allowed to swap out some cards before starting the next Scenario (the folks before us had kind of nerfed the Kyra and Ezren decks, not to mention someone giving Kyra a +1 to Dexterity for some reason [we didn't change that since the whole idea was to mark in pen and go forth]). I assumed that was par for the course but maybe they were just trying to make sure we had fun?

To clarify, we were in Fortress, so we were allowed to grab cards that were 2 and lower and swap them out.

Do not presume anything from our BGG.Con games. Strange things happen when you're running 30 scenarios in 5 breakneck days.

Gotcha. Thanks, Mike!

This is very true. My group recently tried to run 23 in 2 days. While we did not swap people in and out and everything like that, we did have a few issues with decision making towards the end of the run.
