The titles says it all. If you have a familiar, and you say, use UMD to cast a scroll of cure light wounds, or use a wand, can you have the familiar deliver the touch spell for you? also, can you say, use a scroll of enlarge person on your familiar? or do these abilities only work with spells you cast yourself? looking for RAW here.

Bump. and also curious if you can use Spell-like abilities on familiars.

Wands, definitely not. You are not casting a spell, you're activating a spell trigger item.

Scrolls, probably. Using a scroll is practically casting a spell in every relevant way. Even if you have to use UMD, I don't see why you couldn't designate your Familiar as your "toucher".

Regarding spell-like abilities... Good question.

I second all.three of these!

I was just wondering sla's for my home game where I had pirate monkey familiars delivering frigid touch slas. I wasn't sure if it was legal or not but decided what the heck, touch attack monkeys are awesome!

I think SLAs are good. since you are 'casting' them. you have to make concentration, they can be interrupted, etc.

Liberty's Edge

is there an official ruling on this, since I got a familiar and want to be sure I can make him deliver Breath of Life from a scroll. Yes I'm a cleric with a familiar

Silver Crusade

I was wondering the same thing, but for more low level reasons. I have a druid with a familiar and want to know if I can tap him with my wand of Longstrider when I hit myself with it.

Quote:

Items as Spells: Does using a potion, scroll, staff, or wand count as "casting a spell" for purposes of feats and special abilities like Augment Summoning, Spell Focus, an evoker's ability to do extra damage with evocation spells, bloodline abilities, and so on?

No. Unless they specifically state otherwise, feats and abilities that modify spells you cast only affect actual spellcasting, not using magic items that emulate spellcasting or work like spellcasting.

It doesn't work, unfortunately. Also, this FAQ predates when this was originally asked.

and for reference

The druid may cast a spell with a target of “You” on her animal companion (as a touch range spell) instead of on herself. A druid may cast spells on her animal companion even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the companion's type (animal). Spells cast in this way must come from a class that grants an animal companion. This ability does not allow the animal to share abilities that are not spells, even if they function like spells.

Emphasis all mine.

Hmmm... that language in the Share Spells ability for druid animal companions isn't in the wizard familiar section, which is where I was looking. My PC will have a domain that gives a familiar, not an animal companion, so I wasn't even looking in the druid AC rules.

But that FAQ should cover it. Thanks.

Ah, you're right, I missed the latter part of "druid with a familiar". But yeah, it's unfortunate. I really wanted scrolls to work for one of my characters. My reasoning being that's closer to casting a spell than a wand (i.e. it's a spell completion), but it unfortunately doesn't work.

The Familiar Share Spells ability has fewer restrictions than the Animal Companion ability. I believe SLAs work for Familiars.
