What happens with demons when they are slain on the material plane?

Dark Archive

There are a couple of scenarios, that indicate that non-summoned (i.e. summon monster) demons do not vanish when slain. E.g. demons around the wordlwound. So what happens with their corpses? Do they stay? Do they decompose?

It depends on the setting. In Golarion they just die, leaving a nice corpse behind to be looted.

Their physical body is laid behind. They (themselves) cease to exist as their souls are connected to their bodies.

This is why demons/devils hate being on material plane and why they don't take over. They have an innate fear of ceasing to exist.

Silver Crusade

one would argue they don't take over due to fear of being Slain by the living of Golarion, since, if it would be easy.. ya know..

I always played it as when killed here on the prime plane, the body rapidly rots (but not so fast that you cannot harvest stuff from it) leaving any loot or whatever it carried, and its lifeforce spirit whatnot, returns to their own plane and reforms after a set time, if slain upon their own plane then they are destroyed.

But hey that's just my old-school take on it.

Edit:
Ahh so it seems in Demons revisited it states that the various summon monster spells bring magical duplicates, that poof away upon death.
But gate and planar ally bring them fully into this plane, and no poof upon death.
