Cavalier and mount friendly AP?

Jade Regent

Sovereign Court

Not looking for spoilers. I may be playing in this AP in a few weeks when my CC game wraps up. If I plan on a cavalier will I get use of the mount?

It's not exactly the most welcoming, really. Certain sections/books give you opportunities, but other times you're dealing with narrow hallways and stairs, which can be a little silly. Our mounted archer eventually changed over to a Zen Archer.

Overall, it's going to be very effective in portions of the AP, but unusable a lot more of the time.

As a player I can confirm what wu nakita said.

There are parts where the mount will shine. And with that I mean dominate the battlefield and leave the footsloggers in awe....

(we had a mounted samurai)

And then you reach indoor areas/dungeons/buildings/crowded cities. Probably the bigger part of my play experience so far (your mileage may vary).

And we are close to ending the 3rd book or so the DM has told me.

After book three the chances for mounted combat outside buildings evaporate quickly.

As I recall, the majority of indoor areas have ten foot wide doors and corridors - 'one square = ten feet' on many maps. Possibly not in the dungeons in the first two books - it's been a while since I played those.

Man, I'm going to give you the ultimate in "non-answers."

Also, I'll preface this with: I'm the GM for our group's journey through Jade Regent. I don't read beyond the current book for spoilers issues since I have a problem keeping my mouth shut... Anyway, just for you - literally - I checked out the interactive maps to get an idea of what kinds of terrain are present in the AP.

For a mount, it's tricky. Yes, a lot of the maps are HUGE, with 10'x10' squares or just generally open floor plans, but many of these huge areas are caverns or inside.

A mount would probably do well in the scenario, especially if you're small. If you're medium, you could pull it off, knowing that there will be places where your animal companion is inappropriate. Provided your GM's not running a magic-starved game, I'd make hosteling armor your priority; YES, I mean it's more important than your weapon. Given some of the rugged terrain the party will face, having your GM ask about how you're transporting your horse is not something you want slowing down the party.

As another thing to note, a lot of the 10'x10' squares are hallways that are 10'x10'. If your mount is large, and there's an encounter in such a tight space, you'll either get squeezed out or you'll block the rest of the party because of choke-point. Mounted classes get some cool things, so I'm not saying "Don't do it." Just keep in mind that a horse inside a holy temple may not be appropriate, or he may not be sufficiently limber to be in combat on a boat, et cetera.

But seriously, if you can't get hosteling armor, carry companion, or a medium mount, you'll probably be off your mount more often than not. I don't think I'd even consider the Mammoth Rider PrC, and as a GM, I may not allow it just to alleviate headache; there simply isn't the space for a huge mount in the AP's settings.

Actually I was thinking of an emissary cavalier of the cockatrice order. The mount wouldn't be everything but it would be a big part of the characters ability. I appreciate the tips everyone.

Unless your flying, Reign of Winter isn't all that friendly. Even when flying you are going to have to make sure your fly checks are good.

If your mount has a lot of ways to overcome difficult train, then maybe Reign of Winter. It has tons of outdoor fighting; which actually would make Mammoth Rider viable for a change.

The best person to ask is your GM really. I've been running JR (we just started Forest of Spirits) and the party includes a paladin with his mount. I've worked fairly well to ensure the player can actually use their mount regularly and think its been working well. Sometimes the player uses the mount indoors but not always. That said there's been some memorable mounted battles (nothing like charging frost giants on horseback) and I think out of many of the APs JR gives more chances for mounted characters to shine.

I have spoken to my GM and he says not to be too worried. The gist I am getting from my friends familair with the AP is dont put all the tricks in one basket. So I am going to try and build a cavalier suited for on and off horseback. I really apreciate the help without the spoilers folks you are the best!
