I know it has been discussed before, but did anyone ever actually figure out about how many submissions are turned in each year?
Paizo never says how many are in the first round of the contest. Many people keep track of the unique items that they see, but based on this voting system I don't think even the Champion Voters saw every Item last year. In part because after a certain point they dropped off a certain percentage of items that had gotten the lowest votes. That also doesn't include any number of items that were DQ'd before the open voting began. They miss some every year, but most of the over word count, not a Wondrous Items get pulled from the list before we even begin voting. They have said it gets bigger every year and the last guesses I have seen put the number between 1,200 to 2,000 entries.

Also repeats so even if you voted 5,000 times doesn't mean you saw 10,000 items.

This is a lot of fun! I didn't really do much voting last year, but work is slow and so I'm using my time productively by voting in between phone calls.
It's also cool to see items that I can relate to other peoples' comments, which initially don't make any sense, then are hilarious when I see the item in question.

And finally, my own item. The perfect reason to take a long break from voting.
Approaching dedicated, still no sight of mine. You are a lucky man.
Weirdly, I am feeling that I may have been DQ'd but I cannot see why when I look at my item as so far, not one comment in this thread can be applied to my item.
(I've normally hit 3 or 4 comments by now).
Started getting a batch of new items... fingers crossed.

Could be it is just that good. so, no one commented on it?
Also if you want to pm, I could tell you if I saw it. (I think that is ok. as people were seeing others items before sending in)

Oh MY! I don't want a item which makes me suffer from it. Cursed!
When did this become a thing that items aren't supposed to have drawbacks? Is that in the rules/advice somewhere (aside from avoiding drawbacks that aren't really) or do people just have a stick up their butt about it? Shouldn't having to balance positive and negative effects make the choice of using an item more rather than less interesting? Was the goblin skull bomb not considered "cursed?"

No one has said this yet...
There is this thing that occurs during voting sessions, it's called Voter Fatigue. What this means is, voters get tired towards the end of their voting session and therefore will start scanning items and making decisions on how they will vote possibly without reading the whole item.
This means you MUST put the COOL power FIRST.
If you start with bonus to skill, stat, AC, DR, Saves - these are mundane, boring run of the mill benefits. They don't excite. If you put the exciting powers first you will get more votes - voter fatigue wont hit you and you wont turn off tired voters with boring lead in powers.
So please, please, put the COOL first.

I've been doing this since I got my first pair of items. There already are so many "standard" items to enhance the vital character stats, and if an items falls into that category I am not impressed. If you can do something that is interesting, not easily replaceable by casting a spell, and maybe even something you want to have outside of combat, I am all for it.

OK, I'm sorry, but what is with all the farming stuff? Gardener's tools, seeds, and other paraphernalia for growing trees, shrubs, and vegetables. I'm a viticulturist and a horticulturalist in real life and I see no adventure in either areas.
Don't get me wrong, I'm passionate about what I do for a living. But I really don't think "pruning the verge" makes for great adventure writing.

It's so bizarre how these themes pop up every year. Like some kind of collective unconscious effect...

Oh big yes on gardeners as heroes! :D
Just didn't see him pulling out the secateurs to prune back orcs and giant spiders.

We should do a "Player's Guide to Camping and Gardening" at the end of the first round, there are enough etnries floating around to even consider a second volume "Seed and Soup - Moar Camping and Gardening".
Don't forget cooking. We could get Gordon Ramsay to host a very special edition of Hell's Kitchen, where the losers are turned into material components for some of the dishes.

I guess including a real drawback without pushing the item into the cursed item category is a very, very fine line to walk.
Much like making an item fun(ny) without turning it into a joke item.
The goblin skull bomb somehow, amazingly, manages to pull of both of these things. Oddly enough, I think the latter "quirk" justifies the former.
