Combined, both Christina and Tim have written a number of books on witches and warlocks. Could you give us a breakdown on the different books, what makes them different, and what past works will most influence the current project and in what way? Has there been any thoughts about having Tim or Christina's other books as add-ons, stretch goals or other pledge levels. How about an Ultimate Witch Fan or Multi-System Witch pledge level that includes pdf and/or print copies of The Witch, Way of the Witch, Liber Mysterium, and Eldritch Witchery or some other combination of the above?

Oh man, this came at the worst possible time for me... I want to back it, but between moving costs, bills, a trip to the Soundwave festival planned months in advance and having a wedding to go to that requires a three day stay at a fairly pricey (though admittedly lovely) manor house hotel, I'm going to be struggling... guess we'll have to see what I can do.

Will it include anything like the 3.5 Hexblade? Such as my own Witchblade . . . because I'd LOVE to see something similar in (semi-) official print.

goeticgeek,
I'd love to be able to offer those too. I will need to talk with my publisher at Elf Lair Games.
Ok so what makes UW&W, well...Ultimate?
The Ultimate Witch & Warlock began a number of years ago for me. I was working on collecting everything I had done for witches for various games that never saw print (Buffy, WitchCraft RPG, Ghosts of Albion), items from my blog and what I considered the best of the best OGC.
When the whole Old School thing hit, I shelved UW&W and produced "The Witch for Basic Era Games" and then later "Eldritch Witchery".
Christina approached me about a potential Pathfinder book and asked if I had material. I turned around and gave her 500+ pages of things I have been working on.
UW&W is the spiritual successor to "Liber Mysterium", but also to "Way of the Witch" a product I very much loved. If you liked either of those then you are likely to like this one. With Liber I have had another 10 years of playing witches in a d20/3.x game and have made many tweaks that only real play can afford you.
Let me say this. I am so excited about this. Not only do I have a ton of great material, but the idea of getting it all together for the first time in one book is fantastic.
Hope that helps!

Tim Brannan talks about what he liked and disliked about the various D20 witches on the Misfit Studios blog.
Oceanshieldwolf |
@Christina - Not sure why, but the links to the Kickstarter aren't working on the blog.
@TimBrannan - the Kickstarter table of contents for the book for Chapter 3 mentions Multi-Class Paths. Are these similar to Paizo's recently play tested Hybrid classes or Multiclass Archetypes?
Bardess |
Tim forgot to talk about his Complete Netbook of Witches and Warlocks for 2E. I loved it, and I hope to find the same flavor in this new work. I would have liked to be a Witch Priestess and contribute to the book, but... pocket-money is not enough ^^;
Will Morgan's chapter feature some love for the Hexcrafter magus archetype? I really hope so.

Btw, some folks have asked why we are asking for 20,000.
Putting a large publication-quality book like this together is not cheap. We aren't skipping any process here. There are people who need to get paid who are involved in this project. While we all love our hobby, we want to get paid for our time.
So, who gets paid for Strange Brew?
1. Cover artist
2. Logo artist (the logo is not yet on the site)
3. Author--we wouldn't have a book without the author--and additional sign-on authors.
4. Developer--Someone needs to put everything in a cohesive order and make sure the mechanics are sound.
5. Editor--The editor ensures the book reads professionally.
6. The artists. A big chunk of the art will be done by Jacob Blackmon. I've contracted him to do 100 new images, just for the main book. Any stretch goals will require their own art, of course. Peter Bradley will do two scenes for the book, as well, and we may find some usable stock art. But 90% will be new art.
7. Layout person
8. Kickstarter takes 10%
9. A buffer for miscellaneous unexpected costs
10. Printing
11. Shipping and shipping products costs
12. Labor to help ship the product
13. Hero Lab programmer costs
Hope that helps you understand what all is involved in a book like this.

Not exactly.
These were something I came up with for Liber Mysterium back in 2003.
Basically they were a layout of classes and levels to get a desired effect.
So for example I had a "Green Witch" which was a multi-classed Witch and Druid. I believe 15 levels of witch and 5 levels of druid. I replotted the BAB, saves and spell and power progression. Yes it was mechanically a multi-class, but thematically something new.
Hope that helps.

Thanks! I loved it too!
But I was focusing just on the d20 stuff for this post.As for the Hexcrafter...well I have read so much over the last few months that I am sure it is there somewhere, but I need to look again.

We will consider various ideas, but the Ultimate Shaman, the book up next by Rich Howard, will venture into witchdoctor territory.
Allow me to say that I REALLY psyched about the Ultimate Shaman. I think it is going to be a great book too. I'll be the first on to pledge on that kickstarter.
TimBrannan |
Are you going to do something for the Witchdoctor or some sort of voodoo esque thing.
It would be cool if you can have like as a Warlock thing like a Coven Commander or something.
I like Voodoo. A lot.
But I go back and forth on it a lot too.
Yes, I have stuff written for it, not sure if it will make the cut yet or not.

Thanks Tim. Sounds like multicclass builds to achieve certain concepts, with some tweaking.

Hey folks!
After checking with Christina and making sure the post to my website the other day about my contribution to this Kickstarter wasn't too revealing, I put together an article on the Ennie-nominated NERDTrek regarding Quarrels in Quorakkis.
It is located HERE!

I think it's unfair to charge 10$ for Talented Witch, when Owen Stephens charges 5$ for his talented line pdfs. But, I'm not gonna back this, so it probably doesn't matter.
Note that the extra $10 is for all stretch goals, which will include 3 books, not just the Talented Witch. I'll have a post from Morgan Boehringer about his book very soon.
Thanks for the input, though.

and perhaps the stunningly handsome writer he brought in to help work on it.

I've added a cover concept into the body of the Strange Brew kickstarter now. Peter Bradley has further colorized the cover. Let me know what you like or don't like on the lettering. This isn't a final version.
Changing Man |
Hmm... not a big fan of the font used for the lettering- it really doesn't say 'Witchy' to me. And the cauldron between 'strange' and 'brew' reminds me of a swinger club-pub's logo down the street. Also, the male figure seems too 'bright' or 'lit' in the colorized version; to be honest, I liked the subdued shadows of the mono-color version better.

Thanks for the input! Morgan Boehringer happens to be studying graphic design, so he wants to tackle a different banner. I'm not sure what to do about the lit guy. I may use the monochrome version for the Book of Shadows.

If you are on the borderline about backing this project, please let us know what would make you a backer.
Honestly....and at the risk of sounding like a complete newb....I have absolutlely no idea what is going on ?
I'm used to....
PDF is released at X cost.
If I'm interested in what is in PDF...I buy PDF.
I'm interested in the Gauntlet witch update that is supposedly in here somewhere....but completely confused by all the "stretch goal" and "backing" stuff :(
I have been silently watching...to see if I can just figure it out...but frankly I'm still lost.
It "appears" to me that this is more like a fund raiser...and that your donation towards the project determines how much you get...?

Kickstarter is about raising funds to produce product. For the most part, you hedge your bet that you will get more bang for your buck paying up front to help a publisher make a series of products exist. Here, you will have a book of witches/warlocks, battle witches, a book of shadows, The Talented Witch, and Hero Lab files at $35 dollars. Print copies, if you pitch in more money.
So, yes, a fundraiser with benefits. Thanks for asking.

So....for example...I back the project at $35 dollars assuming the content I'm interested in is in the "battle witches" section, and that the rest is icing on the cake...
So what happens if you don't hit goal ?

Yes, you back at $35 and get the entire shebang in PDF. If it doesn't make, you are not charged with kickstarter.
Changing Man |
What she said.
But also, by pledging and helping reach certain stretch goals, you can also help make a project/product even bigger and better, as extra funding results in being able to 'upgrade' the books and such. That's what happened with the Advanced Bestiary, Deep Magic, Ultimate Psionics (and Miniatures), and... well, lots of Kickstarters. Not only are you helping yourself get cool loot, you're paying it forward for future gamers as well :)
