I am an avid lurker. I scour most posts about this interesting game, read the banter (and arguments) between posters and pick through to try to grasp the underlying community.
The one consistent theme of every post; whether one will try to be a bandit, soldier, crafter or king; is passion. Every poster is passionate. Posted theories about how things should be handled, and how the 'meta' of the game should work.
What I am interested in, is why do you want to play? What makes you passionate about PFO? What do you look forward to enjoying.
I will start.
I have been an avid table top gamer since 1982. I have found many friends whom I still hang out with today. I started playing online games on the first day of Everquest, and was blown away by the granduer and freedom it provided.I have been playing pathfinder tabletop since it came to my FLGS. I am a member of Pathfinder Society (although I only have time to go about once a month now).
I am married, I have a kid and another on the way (my family time is my first priority), so my time is somewhat limited.
PFO will be a little vacation spot I can go to, for a couple hours at a time and get away from the rat race of work and real life.
I want to meet new people, talked to them on VC. I want little adventures, whether dealing with an escalation with others, or crafting back in town. I want to see the granduer of an empty world and the thrill of helping fill it. I want to travel to the ends of Golarion (and beyond). I want to roleplay sitting in a tavern. I am interested in PvP (but I will probably suck at it).
The idea of bantering with bandits and trying to bargain with a dragon. That's what will keep me coming back.

The reason I want to play is simple. I am an avid rp'er and this is finally a game which mixes the consequence of a sandbox like Eve with actual avatar's to rp with.
While I have certainly played theme park games I always found the RP unsatisfactory as it was impossible for it to leave the world changed.
On the other hand spending times taking and defending sovereignty in Eve gave epic stories and most of the alliance histories could be written as stirring stories. Eve however lacked the personal touch of avatars to do the social side of RP with
Finally I get combined in one game my two loves and not only that get them packaged up in a style and setting I can relate to at least a little right from the outset due to the 2nd edition AD&D table top gaming of my youth.

Hey Brax...been awhile.
For me the promise of PfO is the opportunity to build and shape a community with (or perhaps toward) common goals. Similarly, I am a problem solver and a schemer...I like to build plans see if I can nudge them into fruition. And of course, social groups, being nonlinear complex systems bordering upon chaos, are fun to just poke and see what happens.
The other stuff, dungeons, exploration, massive combat, etc...that's all just icing on the cake.

My interest lays in the player-driven nature. I originally started out with MMOs that did not have these huge story-quest narratives and it was up to the players to create their own stories. The themepark games I play have their own stories, but then the player stories must be held subservient to the pre-scripted story or else it breaks immersion.
I want to be able to participate and help create the narrative in the world, not be subject to the whims of a handful of writers.
I wish to surround myself with cooperative-minded players and help erect a shining bastion of Good to serve as a safe-haven from the wickedness of the world. If the story I wish to see, of a goodly nation standing strong against the storm, fails then I want it to do so because the storm was too powerful. Not because it was fated to be so by some overarching design.

I also like the story telling aspect of sandbox MMO's and look forward to that in PFO.
What strikes me most about that premise is that the stories in games like Eve involve and are effected by those that are not roleplayers.
The stories are an account of the competition, warfare, piracy, merchant superiority, and bounty hunting that take place. No one is completely immune to danger. People form up organizations, fall apart, and rebuild all the time.
Knowing that a humble mining trip could end in disaster keeps me on the edge of my seat. While I am not much of an active roleplayer these days, whenever I play Eve I am apart of an overall narrative. Even better it is an unscripted one.
Like other's have noted I also have problems with identifying with the world in Eve. I still come back to it from time to time, but you are your ships. Much of the movement and attacks also feel largely automated to me at times.
I look forward to PFO to see a similar premise with an avatar I can identify with.

I'm a member and officer of Pax Aeternum.
What I hope to see is a world full of player-made stories and content. I want to participate in engaging RP and see the world changed through our sweat and efforts.
I also would like to see active, engaging PVP. No stun-locks or suicide ganks. Griefing should never be accepted, but honest combat should be encouraged and enjoyed.
I would love to see consequences for actions. NPC's should cower or flee from those of base reputations, while those with sterling reputations should be welcomed with open arms.
I hope to enjoy a world with wide open expanses begging to be explored, a world with (eventually) thriving cities of player design, a world where people have the opportunity to strive amidst the chaos of unbridled war or the rule of enforced peace.

Personally I like the opportunity that people will have to be the content, to be active participants rather than simply passive observers in a single, persistent world.
I'll leave my affiliation as UnNamed, but I aim to do my best, kill or be killed, loved or loathed, to be somebody else's content and I hope that they reciprocate.

That is one of the reasons that I am pulled to this game. It will be what WE make it. Players are the content. Player interaction drives everything.
While not striving for a "shining bastion of good", I think what my organization intends to create would be a welcoming place for a large percent of the player population. I want to be part of something great. I think we all do. I think we all will in our own right.
The combat element intrigues me. Formation combat. Sieges. PvP with lasting effects on the environment.

On the Bartel test I'm 87% socialiser and 80% killer (Out of 200%) and I think that's what constantly drives me toward these titles and the role I play in them.
I thrill in competition and coming out on top but I like to do so as a team, and I like my fight to have meaning. Most MMO titles focus too much around balancing 1vs1 PVP, and your victories for the red vs. blue / horde vs. alliance group ultimately don't impact the game or community.
Fighting conflicts over meaningful ideals, on a side of my choosing, where the outcome influences the atmosphere of the community... It's thrilling, rewarding, and addictive.

What I am interested in, is why do you want to play? What makes you passionate about PFO? What do you look forward to enjoying.
I'd like to think I recognize good design / something with potential. :) There's a good line in a great (if dark) movie: El Secreto de Sus Ojos (The Secret In Their Eyes) concerning "passion" and maybe I have a passion for stories and far from alone in thinking that. I seem to remember a picture perhaps when I played D&D as a kid of a robed and hooded figure (maybe it was supposed to be the GM?) palm of hand extended as if offering something, perhaps holding a small sphere of a world glowing in the darkness there: A good image of the power of the story-teller, now remembering it... and by extension the virtual world where your mind can actually travel to; much like some of these funny reports of shamans that put their tribes-folk under trance and they travel to all sorts of places under the influence of psychedelic substances and their shamans' ability to guide their "trip". Perhaps a minor digression, but to draw parallels with the modern technology and the use of networks to connect computers and players actions? Or just another form of what literature or movies already do: Seeing a world from different perspectives, thought many different eyes and in different places and contexts and forms. I've done one or two dangerous things such as rock-climbing/hiking in RL (heights are dangerous damnit!) and there is a great sense of adventure in such activities, but in many ways only a little less so in some of these stories - without the real risk of falling a few hundred feet thank the sky, just thinking about that gives me cold chills, though atst I remember feeding an Alpine Chough atst who hopped onto a boulder nonchalently right in front of us as heart-beat was pumping furiously, steam coming out of the mouth with each breathe, and watching almost out-of-body experience as this friendly bird fluttered effortlessly following our group as we snail-paced our way across the treacherous snowy chasm, barely hanging on for dear life... ! I think in some context you can emulate that sense of teamwork, danger and experience, in a virtual world, so it's exciting to see if it can be done.*
I look forward to a great community in PFO, mostly. Many mmorpgs come out and there's the same dissonance played out where they promise a world but it's the players that make or break it? *Tbh, I can't do better than agree with some of the reasons already provided.

For me it is the hints and promises that this game will recapture those "magic moments". You know, your first few times at TT games.
Good friends, the chance to build something persistent, and the thrill and angst that I might have to help "rebuild" something persistent.
The politics, the lessons, the standing with others that share your ideals.

I'm looking to play a role in PFO as a notorious outlaw, a true Lord of Bandits. Unless you have experienced the thrill of stealing from other players, in a PvP environment, you really could not understand where I'm coming from.
Unlike my experiences in other sandbox Open World PvP MMOs, I believe that my experience in PFO will provide even greater opportunities to pull off uniquely eventful heists. With the possibility of raiding and even sacking settlements, I'm filled with anticipation to be the first company of bandits to do just that.

2. Creating events that other players can enjoy and make their own through their participation.
3. Managing and participating in RP quests and plots.
In short, having a game again where the presence of other people really does matter...and what we do, create, and share really matters.

There are many thing I am looking forward to in Pathfinder and a couple that at first made me nervous[PVP] but the developers and the community here made me see that Pathfinder need all of it elements, including pvp to make a game that I can be passionate about. It needs the parts I love and the parts that make me frightened. I am not a pvper and normally a pvp-centric game would not be on my list let alone get money from me.
I love to craft in most game but hate the fact that crafting is pretty useless except to make stuff for alts, be a money sink, or make coin gathering. I usually solo in most games and hardly ever play the end game raid content since most time I do not pass the group criteria of what they are looking for, mostly play the easy to solo dps type.
With Pathfinder I am hoping that what I can give to the community in my skill set will be needed. The fact we will be each other content is great as far as I can see. I want to craft you stuff you need to buy. I need to go gather and will need someone to guard me and well here you are. Eh, Well I hope you will be there.
I think that is going to be the best part of Pathfinder that we need each other throughout the life of the game and not just at the end. We all be needed and not just the top tier of the trinity.
I am looking forward to being part of a greater whole and create something. I played Horizons and belong to a dragon only guild that had a great time in spite of the short coming of the game which promoted solo over group play. I am hoping to join a great group of folk here where the game promote interaction between people rather than discourage it.
I believe from what I see on our forums we will be a great community. We will fight our best to make this game something WE ALL Pvper, Non Pvper, Crafter, Diplomat and every one in between, can get together and make a world worth remembering.

I just want a virtual world I can be apart of. Something with freedom and choice. I don't like the structure of WoW RPGs, which have seeped into every MMO as of late. I don't play MMOs for forced teamwork and grinding. I simply want to play in a world that has other people. And a world where other people can have a real impact is just fantastic.
I'll probably be a mercenary or explorer, depending on my mood.

Simply stated, I love EVE. I think EVE is a great game. I know PfO isn't "fantasy EVE" but it's similar enough that it drew me in. I love sci-fi games, but I've been playing EVE for 10 years, I'd like a change of pace for my sandbox game of choice and PfO fits the bill.
I want a game where I can leverage the Pax community to build cities, work together to harvest resources and make things from them, have the occasional party with our friends and the general community as a whole, and in my downtime, have some good fun, meaningful PVP in the mix, as well.

What I really want to see is a community that lives up to Ryan's expectations:
... the attitude that causing pain to another person is acceptable won't be tolerated.
What I really want to see happen is that members of the community... will reach out to players who come in with that attitude and help influence them to have a better approach to our community.

I just want a community that lives up to MY expectations. I never had fun playing EVE. It was beautiful, intriguing, interesting, you could see neat and mysterious things, get into fights (I lost most, only played a year), but I never really had fun. Saying that, I think EVE does have one of the most innovative skill systems in gaming, so casuals and hardcores gain at the same rate. It all matters what you train and what you do with what you learned.
So, I hope I can be part of a larger community and have a positive influence. I have always been a healer, cleric or priest type character, or a good aligned, because I see things in RL that are negative I want my relaxing time to be positive. I abhor lying, cheating and stealing, so I will oppose banditry at every opportunity. Win some, lose some. But as long as it is done in the spirit of the community, I am okay with both wins and losses. It is part of the package and it would probably be a good idea for us all to get a thick skin if we want to endure as residents of the River Kingdoms. That seems to be one of the virtues of the many residents in all the lore. I'll try to take that to heart.

Currently unaligned to any groups, companie4s, guilds, ethos or whatnot.
Mostly I just want to play a MMO that closely mirrors a table top game. WoW and it's ilk don't do that. It's all what the designer create and give to you. Might be fun but eventually you've seen all you can and get bored. In PFO I hope ot see bandits and kings, lovers and fighters, wizards running amok and great battles of politics and strength. I expect betrayals and pacts that bind people together. I expect chaos and order, good and evil all fighting, creating and destroying. A living breathing world (or as close as we can recreate in a game)
Orc invasions, dragons, undead, fae, demons, devils and all sorts of critters to kill, loots, befriend or oppress.
In short, what PFO seems to offer. The players are the ones who do this, not the designers. They just give the tools and wait to see what we all do with it. (and they even going to stop the really bad/nasty stuff unlike Eve :) )

This is the sort of thing you can look forward to if PfO gives the players the ability to impact on the world as Eve
This eve alliance was one of the rp alliances and this reads like quite a lot of rp guilds back story timelines.
The difference is these battles occured! Winners and losers weren't prescripted but decided by actual in game actions. Stations were destroyed. Territories won and lost. The sweet elation of victory and bitter taste of defeat was real....not something you read about in the developers lore then shrug as you kill Illidan for the 19th time

I have an affiliation with a guild called Crimson Wing, but the things I say should not be considered representative of that organization.
My interest is in observing and influencing the evolution of transnational online human culture via the medium of online games.
Second: As a player of computer games and RPGs who was in from the very early days I greatly desire to see an online RPG done right for once, and I believe that only a game that provides for RP-meaningful PvP has a chance of doing that.
