I was wondering if there was a way to planar bind something with more than 18HD. I'm playing a 20th level summoner and wouldn't mind having a Balor for a little bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Creatures with more than 18 HD can be called through the gate but summoner does not get access to it.

Ah, I am sorry. Thank you for that. And actually summoners get it as a special ability at 19th level.

Ugh. Right, I forgot their summon monster spell-like ability upgrades to gate - I just checked their spell list.
