Favored Enemies: "I hate everything."

Reign of Winter

Liberty's Edge

So after much waffling between a cleric (whom I affectionately called BATTLEPOPE) and ranger (tentatively called Rangest) I'm gonna go ranger for Reign of Winter.

Any good ideas for favored enemies? (I'm going Infiltrator Ranger.)

Also, my planned feat build is:

1. Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot
2. Rapid Shot (bonus feat)
3. Deadly Aim
5. Dodge
6. Improved Precise Shot (bonus feat)
7. Clustered Shots
9. ???
10. Shot on the Run (bonus feat)
11. ???

His name should be Francis, of course.

As for FE's, Monstrous Humanoid is usually a safe bet in my experience.

Fey 1st

Liberty's Edge

I know there was a small book that suggested some favored enemies, I just don't have access to it at the moment. (I think it suggested undead, monstrous humanoids, animals, and outsiders eventually?)

And I revised the build slightly.

1. Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot
2. Rapid Shot (bonus feat)
3. Deadly Aim
5. Weapon Focus (Longbows)
6. Point Blank Master (Longbows) (bonus feat)
7. Clustered Shots
9. Dodge (?)
10. Shot on the Run (bonus feat)

Humans first.

Dunno what to suggest after that which wouldn't be meta-gaming. Maybe Fey at 5th level and dragons at 10th?

If you're going archer, ditch Dodge for something else. You can pick up that bonus elsewhere- especially if you don't plan on melee being a primary attack option. Rangers can wear enough armor where Dodge doesn't matter as much, especially if it's your 9th level feat- may I suggest Crit Focus? +4 to confirm crits yes please!

For Fav Enemy options, are you thinking of People of the North? There is an Ulfen Role, 'Ulfen Raider' that lists dragon, fey, humanoid (giant) and (human).

Ask your GM about Favored Ranger Stuff. Choosing what's appropriate for your background is a good start, though. Your GM might give you a vague idea in regards to what you might often encounter, or what you might never encounter, to guide your choices.

I'd actually recommend Manyshot over Crit Focus. Free extra damage on your first attack each round.

Agreed, Crit Focus is too situational at that point. Even with Falcon bracers (GET THESE) you're getting only 10% chance to even confirm a crit anyway. Not that you shouldn't take it (your choice), but NOT before Manyshot which is a promised 100% damage increase every full attack.

Also agree you can ignore Dodge. IF you want a defensive feat get Iron Will. You'll be hit more by mumbojumbo in the back rows more than you will sword and arrows ideally (not always). Plus in a game about WITCHES this goes double. It's not a necessary feat either though.

Ditch Shot on the run and dodge, get Many shot, Snap Shot, Combat Reflexes, and Improved Snap shot.

Though if you can only get shot on the run from your ranger thing, that's fine.

Note on Falcon bracers, they're being repriced (to 12,000 GP, which is still a steal IMHO)

Unless the campaign is going to be very unusual, I think humanoid (human) should always be a ranger's first choice of favored enemy. You get by far the most mileage out of it in any of the APs I'm familiar with (not specifically familiar with RoW, however). You're always fighting humans.

YMMV. I have never played an AP with an abundance of human enemies.

Grand Lodge

Pathfinder Society Play on the other hand almost always rewards Fav Enemy Human.

Back to topic: Do some research on common monsters/foes of Irressin is my 10 cents on best value... also pick something thats gonna stay valid until mid levels.

Fey is a good one. Humans is okay, but not great (though that may change in Book 4). When the Ranger is up for a second enemy, Giants would be an excellent choice for the +4.

Wait I'm a bit confused now.

How is "This FE might be good" "Well that's not really a given, in my experience" off topic to the topic of "What would be a good Favored Enemy"?

Rynjin: most APs do feature an abundance of human enemies, especially in the early going. By the time the 2nd favored enemy typically crops up, the human FE can be 'left behind' if one so chooses. It does vary by AP though. Thankfully, the players' guides tend to provide pretty good guidance on what to expect. A bit of digging on the players' part and one's ranger should do reasonably well. :)

You know, just once I want "Plant" to be the required favored enemy. It really doesn't get much play and I have concept for a deranged gnome gardener that I really want to use.

My Kingmaker group wishes they had a ranger with FE: Plant. All focused around mind-affecting stuff, then they keep getting killed by mushrooms.

Though my brain does twitch every time I see a fungus monster with the "Plant" type...

The Ranger in the Kingmaker game that I am running chose Fey as a favored enemy and now lives in total fear of all the plant-monsters.

Liberty's Edge

In a campaign I have been playing, we have run into animated chairs/other furniture a couple of times and our Inquisitor got beat up pretty bad each time, now she is scared of chairs, I even coined the term "Ikea-phobia" which got the GM, who is her boyfriend, and the table as a whole to giggle-snort and laugh out loud, respectively, this term has now sort of entered our group's lexicon, and variants of it occasionally pop up for each of our characters and their respective quirks.

Keep her away from Beauty and the Beast's castle. I had a character knocked senseless by an animated chair once.

A couple years back I started running a hybrid campaign of 2nd edition AD&D and 3rd edition D&D; at one point the half-elven Ranger got bitten by a spider and was in rather bad shape. As a result, she started running her character as hating all vermin.

When a new player (whose only other experience in RPGs was the newer Rogue Trader) joined the group, I ended up switching to Pathfinder rather than confuse the new player (3rd Ed. D&D books weren't available, even used); the Ranger's player gleefully took "vermin" as a favored enemy. ^^ (And she's been puzzled since that several "vermin" are not considered as such - Paizo considers insects and related critters to be vermin, but not rats or their ilk. But seeing she hates spiders and insects, that still works for the character concept.)

After the faeries in RoW, she'll likely be adding Fae to the list. ;)

Make a serial killer, whose favored enemies is either Halflings or Women. But don't tell anyone in the party.

After a friend's LG character was killed a few times by animated rugs, lurkers above/below/offtothesides, and other rug-like monsters, he sort of developed a paranoia about them. He wanted to take FE: Tapestries.

While Kingmaker is far and away in the lead when it comes to Plant-type enemies, Reign of Winter actually contains a decent number of them. There is at least one Plant-type enemy in each of the four modules that have been published so far! They're not really numerous enough to warrant more than a +2 bonus, but they are present. I wouldn't consider a Favored Enemy repertoire of

Level 1 Plant +2
Level 5 Humanoid (giant) +4
Level 10 Dragon +4
Level 15 Humanoid (human) +4

utterly unreasonable.

im runnig a ranger in row with fey as my FE and its been working pretty well.

For Reign of Winter:

1- Humans or Fey. There are plenty of both in the first two books.

5- Fey or Human. There's still plenty of humans and fey in book two.

your problem is going to be book 3, which features giants and lesser demons, and you won't have a good FE.

Book 4, primary enemy is dragons, since you are not going to FE the native humanoid race of another planet you're going to leave behind.

Book 5 is going to be the planet Earth...more humans!!!

Book 6 is going to be Ice Witches (more humans!) and their servants...like fey and evil outsiders.

So, I'd imagine that FE: humans is going to be your most useful FE. Book 3 is going to be a bit of a struggle, however.

10 - Dragons
15 - Evil outsiders.

This really is an AP where you need extra Favored Enemies. There's a 3.5 feat for those, btw! Or memorize a LOT of Instant Enemies...
