I once had a player who asked if her familiar could be played by her husband, or maybe she wanted to play his familiar, I can't remember, but I know I said no. She anthropomorphisizes all animals/familiars/monsters friendly to the party. I'm not a big fan of that.
Furry?

I'm not sure if its a good thing thats your first question.

Also, its not bad for someone to want a pet. Saying "don't turn all my animals into disney critters" is a little different I think.

Grand Lodge

Even Disney has nasty critters.

Not many want to treat them like children, or sleep with them.

So this isn't a PFS legal solution but if the player was insistent on wanting to play a wizard in a home game I'd let him cast 1st level spells as a full round action. I'd say the extra time lets him focus on doing things right. It wouldn't unbalance the game for a fighter to give up a full round to cast a first level spell.

For PFS I'd go with Carnivalist rogue. Familiar+skill ranks+trapfinding+2 reflex. He could take a second level to get a talent and more skills and it wouldn't hurt his bab. If he uses light armor he'd get evasion too.

Grand Lodge

The PFS thing hasn't fully been confirmed.

Unless I missed it.

Yes it has.

Just for the record, the monkey is not being sought as a flank buddy, but a move action buffer, and must be pfs legal. I will admit its a total after thought, and I would have thought about this at creation.

He said PFS legal, not that he was running a PFS game.

Grand Lodge

Ah, I did miss it.

I vote for Separatist Cleric.

Dark Archive

One level of carnivalist rogue + Boon Companion feat nets an Int 8 monkey, without any DM interpretation about whether Monkey domain is allowed. And the gorilla PC would have a pet smarter than him.

Grand Lodge

Well, Separatist Cleric dip opens up Wand use, Scroll use, and Channel.

Carnivalist or Eldritch Heritage seem like the best options, but I forget the prerequisites for eldritch heritage...

You need skillfocus in the class skill of whatever bloodline your taking. Betcha can't guess Arcane Bloodlines class skill!(actually it has 10)

Edit: Fighter isn't lacking feats at all. However this guy has 1 skillpoints per level as a fighter though. So I think he still has to put a point into the skillfocus to use the skill. He doesn't need to use the skill to get the familiar though.

Seems tactically sound to me. One level dip for wand use, will save, alertness, and a free buff every round.

Belts of physical perfection are expensive, so if he has the odd stat he's not planning to belt up then transmuter isn't bad. Or he could go diviner to always act in the surprise round, and possibly one preroll a day with foresight.

Admittedly, it's absolutely ridiculous, but seems like a lot of bang for his buck.

What I've done is that I allow people who take the Leadership feat to take either an animal companion or a familiar. The effective druid/wizard level for your companion/familiar is Character level -4, and I do allow Boon Companion and the animal archetypes from the Animal Archive. It's not very unbalancing and it's pretty fun.

Grand Lodge

Some don't realize that the Wizard choice has been dropped.

All of it is for a Familiar.

I might suggest a divination wizard if he wants to be a wizard to have a familiar. Always getting to act in a surprise is useful for anybody.

I think I'd second the Carnivalist, that someone mentioned. It kind of fits. I mean, he basically wants a trained monkey, right? He could stand by the road and have it perform tricks. Maybe guess peoples weight? Make a few bucks. <shrugs>

SO one of my players wants to take 1 level of wizard to get a familiar. He is a tanky fighter, but wants the critter... His int is 7, so casting 1st level spells is not happening, but what of other functions? Cantrips? Daily powers? Using wands/scrolls? Obviously casting in armor is an issue as well, but...?

Perhaps suggest the Mad Dog Barbarian archetype from the animal Archive? Or even the Pack Master Cavalier? This would give him a companion, rather than a familiar, which could potentially be a flank buddy.

I mean, he can totally go for it, I suppose, but there are some other options.
