.JPG Preview = Small preview of the entire map. Lets you see the content before downloading the larger files.

PDF Battlemap = Suitable for printing and assembly on standard sized paper.

PNG High resolution = Exported map image at 200dpi .PNG images. These images will serve two purposes.

First - If someone wants to take the file to a print shop or kinkos they can be printed out on a large format printer and will print to scale at 1" per 5 foot for use with miniatures. That way you get one map without having to put the pdf together however this option can get expensive.

Second - If you want to use them for VT you can scale them down depending on the VT you are using. Most virtual tabletop programs tend to use maps at 50 or 100 pixels per grid square. Battlegrounds works best with maps that are 122 pixels per grid square (this ensures no pixelation even at full zoom). The images I will be uploading is at 200 pixels per grid so they will scale down to whatever you will need, just use a graphics program to re-size the images. I don't suggest using .JPG as they will loose a lot of clarity.

This is a Work In Progress Thread so I will post maps as I complete them.

Here comes the first one.

One of my problems with the original map was the limited amount of space leading up to the snowman. I felt like I was stacking tokens at the beginning of the pathway to give the players some space to move into the encounter instead of placing them on top of it. I worked around but it I think more space would have worked better for our group.

Wayfinders

Have you seen the amount of space around/leading into the pale tower. I get the impression that the designer doesn't gm/play much on a vtt.

I would actually run the first part without a map. Explain what they see and get actions from the group. I wouldn't even reveal the map until someone at least approached it. You really don't need to count squares until they are close enough to make it move.

While we understand that some people play games on a VTT, an Adventure Path volume is first and foremost a print product. The maps presented in an AP volume serve two purposes: first, for GMs to visualize encounter locations so that, in turn, their players can visualize those locations; and second, as art pieces to add more visual appeal to the book.

As a result, maps are ordered to fulfill those two criteria. They are not designed to translate perfectly onto a VTT, just as they are not designed to placed on the a real tabletop as battlemaps for minis. I believe the majority of gamers play on a regular tabletop; as such, if they're using minis, the GM has to recreate the maps with map packs, flip-mats, dungeon tiles, or redrawing them on battlemaps or gaming paper, or whatever. That's the just the way it is.

Again, we understand that people play on VTTs, but just as we don't provide minis-scale battlemaps of AP locations for tabletop players, neither do we provide them for VTT players.

Thats too bad because with a few simple tweeks the maps would be very vtt friendly. You would be doing online gm'S a great service. Ecspecially those of us who dont know photoshop/gimp and are pressed for time.

Hi Rob, while I understand I have to say that as a Roll20 GM, I would pay extra or a small subscription even for VTT optimized maps. Maybe as an add-on to the AP subscription for an extra $4.99 a month (what we pay for custom map packs in ROLL20 Marketplace) I mean 130,000 subscribers is nothing to sneeze at and would make a lot of customers happy =)

Bwatford, these are simply fantastic! Well done, well done, indeed!

Just have to say it again bwatford, these are fantastic! I'm using them now, and in a few weeks will be starting a second group on RoW as well. And they are really helping me set the tone and save on some prep time. On another note, I went to buy the software you are using, but their site wouldn't take my money! :( So I have been unable to buy it yet.

Dundjinni has been defunct for a long time. We all wish that it would have continued.

For those of you printing the maps here are some tips:

For best results I suggest printing on Glossy Everyday Photo Paper - it's cheap like 100 sheets for $10. Set your inkjet printer to print on Matte Photo Paper and away you go.

I find that printing on plain paper with an inkjet tends to be way to dark. If I do print on plain paper I print using the color laser as not to soak ink through the paper.

Plus printing on the heavier paper and taping the entire thing together lets me role it up and place it in a tube for storage and re-usability. When you unroll just put a paperweight on each corner. Using pewter dragon paperweights adds a nice touch to the session.

Wow, did not know that. Glad I grabbed it when I did then. Now I just need to learn how to use it.

You know guys, I make these maps and obviously I do not charge anyone for them so obviously they are community and I do it to enhance the play of a Paizo product and I get a violation of community use policy email about the maps I have posted here.

Hi Billy,

After reviewing the files you've made available in this thread ( Printable battlemaps and VT maps for Reign of Winter - The Snows of Summer (WIP) ), we've determined that they do not adhere to the Community Use Policy ( http://paizo.com/paizo/about/communityuse ). This includes and is not limited to: not declaring the material as Community Use and improper logo usage. Please take a moment to read through the policy and make the necessary changes before continuing to distribute the material.

So does this mean I can't put the Pathfinder Logo on the maps? It looks like they would want the free advertising. I guess they don't want to be "associated" with the maps.

And I am suppose to write a big disclaimer across the maps that states:

"This [website, character sheet, or whatever it is] uses trademarks and/or copyrights owned by Paizo Publishing, LLC, which are used under Paizo's Community Use Policy. We are expressly prohibited from charging you to use or access this content. This [website, character sheet, or whatever it is] is not published, endorsed, or specifically approved by Paizo Publishing. For more information about Paizo's Community Use Policy, please visit paizo.com/communityuse. For more information about Paizo Publishing and Paizo products, please visit paizo.com."

Thought I was being helpful and doing my part to give back to the community. Oh well I will keep my maps to myself.

So? What is the "status" of these?

@ xorial

I believe we have everything worked out. Future maps will have the Paizo disclaimer on them. I believe the ones that are already up are good to go. I will continue posting maps as they are created.

Awesome

Oh phew! I was beginning to worry. @Chris, thanks for helping work this out for us. I really appreciate it!

What was the required course of action to put maps here? I would like to contribute what I build and don't know what was agreed upon.

Thanks again everyone!

Liberty's Edge

@bwatford - If I might ask, what art package are you using for your tiles? Is that default built in stuff in the software or something else you downloaded? Just wondering if I can use those resources to build maps in something else. I also think I located a friend with the software who can let me use it.

Thanks!

Silly me. I saw this thread and I read "Printable battle maps and Vermont maps for reign of winter". VT as we all know here in Vermont is short for well Vermont :D!

Must use the logo that is associated with 3rd party material and add this disclaimer to the maps:

Lol you showed up their map maker with these incredible maps. Tsk tsk. if you dont mind me asking how long did it take you to make these as a non-professional hobbyist?

@ Macgrenie

Usually about 3-4 hours for a map like the Icy Crossing or Massacre site.

However the lodge took about 7 hours to complete.

* The time includes creating or sourcing the needed graphics, drawing the maps and exporting them to the desired formats.

These maps I consider quick maps.

For a really detailed maps it can take up to a day per room on the map.

Those are simply amazing. I love the Dungeon Crawl Classics and I am currently running a group through a series of them I pathfiinderized. They are currently deep in the Sunless Garden after completing the Wizards Tower.

these are amazing! Do you have an account to accept donations? This has made the first part of Reign of Winter so much better for my players, and I'd gladly send a gratuity your way in order to keep the maps coming.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

The maps will continue. I will post them as I create them for my campaign. My campaign will kick off with our group on April 6th. Depending on their speed as to what they get through will determine the speed that I need to make more maps.

@LogantheBard

Thank you for your kind words and the offer for donations, but I could not accept a donation for the maps to continue and then could not deliver on time because your campaign needed them before mine did and the maps were not ready.

Now if all of you would just kick Paizo for better cartography or have them put me on their payroll then that would be another story.

LOL.....

Your maps are awesome. Thank you very much for sharing!

Do you plan to create maps for the encounters which haven't been given any in the AP?

Well, all New Englanders know Vermont to be a magical land of faeries and maple syrup. :) I just assumed that there's a magic portal leading from Vermont to our frozen realm. ;)

No I do not. Those encounters are quick and a full drawn out battlemap would be a waste for just a couple rounds of combat. I plan on drawing these out on my battlemat by hand quickly during the session.

Your map are amazing. I try to use dundjinny too, but i am not a real artist. Will keep an eye here to be update with your future battlemap.
Thanks

I found some good winter encounter maps doing a google search for those.

The lack of encounter maps in part 1 wasn't too bad, but I find that in Shackled Hut its a glaring omission.

Your maps, printed out and used over a gaming map, were a massive hit at my table when we started Snows of Summer last night. Thankyou sir, for your efforts.

Theses are amazing sir! You are a gentleman and a scholar!

I'm going to have fun with the snowman one. I'm just initially showing the one map saying "I found this cute map someone did of a snowman so I thought I'd share it with you! Here, put your characters on the map..." :D

And then when it hits them with the attack, THEN I add the rest of the map. Encounter! Bwahahahah...

(In short? Thanks for the maps! They're great!)

These are wonderful! Thank you so much for doing this for the community!

Our groups next session is Saturday, so should be a map or two more coming next week.

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone.

Imo opinion you and your group should go into overtime, play like two or three times a week! Bwahaha. But thats cause i just want more of this deliciousness. ;)

Very nice maps. Thank you.

I ran my first session of RoW yesterday, and the Massacre Site map was a HUGE hit. My players were excited to hear there were additional maps in their future. Thank you for all the time and effort that went into creating them. One of my players was completely new to Pathfinder, and you had a part in making his first game a memorable one.

Actually having a map for just certain encounters has my group on edge every time they encounter one. When I laid out the Icy Crossing and described the snowman this last Saturday, our group Viking approached it. It begin to scream the warning at him and I made this very loud and dramatic standing just over the players shoulder.

He advanced and attacked it and the sonic blast blew him down to only two hitpoints. Luckily he was the only one in the area of effect because everyone else said that the snowman was on a printed map and they should go around him at all cost. Lol.

Anyway once he blew, I described it as if the snowman had exploded, all one of the players was concerned with was the top hat. Where did it land. I had it land out on the ice. Once the encounter with the ice elementals was over and one of the group had fallen through the ice and had been rescued they made their way across. The Sulli who wanted the top hat has now strapped it to her warhorse's head and he now wear's the top hat.

The group of six are now about to approach the lodge and so far no character deaths have occurred. They took out the early bandits by surprise rather quickly, using a grease spell and inspire courage from the bard which due to poor saves kept four of the bandits down for the entire fight and took AoO every time they tried to stand up. Eventually there was only two left with 2 hp each and they surrendered. They got information out of them about a rough number of bandits at the lodge and who was in charge. They then striped them of everything but their padded armor tied them up and rolled them down the hill. Telling them if they somehow escape their bonds and can survive the cold they live and if they don't then they die. The group thought it was fair enough and they wouldn't kill them outright. (But with 2 hp left and no cold weather gear I am sure they will parish rather quickly.

Thus is where we ended Saturday's Game.

I notice there is no map for the small village of Ellsprin that the PC's encounter on the way to Whitethrone. Any chance I could commission one? I would be more than willing to compensate you for your efforts.

After reading it closer I guess I wont need them or I will just throw something together. I thought the fish camps were part of the village at first. I can say I am extremely disappointed in the lack of maps and details. I pay the money for these AP's because I dont have the time to make my own. The story is very good but the resources are not.

Just wanted to drop a note of thanks for the time you put into this. We will be using your maps tomorrow, and It was really awesome of you to provide them in pdf format ready to go. Thanks again.
