[Jehova's Arena, Test] Fight the Twelfth, Bruno vs. Charan

Play-by-Post

Bruno and Charan know each other somewhat, but that has little to do with murdering one another for sport. Charan comes in from the north, and Bruno from the south. The crowd, already having seen each of the two in action, waits for the trash-talking.

Charan A10, Bruno L10. Initiative and the other stuff.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Bruno enters on his own bow-legged stride with Esmeralda close behind. He has obviously spent some of his winnings on things other than copious amounts of Ale (well, in addition to the Ale). A new suit of shining chain mail covers him from neck down and his lance looks much higher quality. Even Esmeralda sports new studded leather barding.
Upon seeing his opponent, Bruno smiles wryly, but doesn't offer his usual bravado. He witnessed the Monkey's skills in the previous battle, and knows to not take this foe lightly.

Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Charan steps to B10 and throws his javelin... Defensively.

The grim attitude seems quite unusual on Charan.

I've found no rules that suggestion you can't ranged fight defensively. If I'm wrong, then whee, watch the splatters.

Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Damage if by some Miracle that hits: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

dice+GM:

ride: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

editing to match dice

You can certainly fight defensively with ranged weapons, but it's not necessary to announce the fact that it's a defensive attack (this could matter if your opponent does something differently when they think you're Crane Winging). I guess one could argue that a defensive stance is obvious, but since the only noticeable (by the math) effect is a penalty to attack rolls, and this is easily obscured by the dice, I feel that it's bluffable either way. Fully hiding your combat tactics does require trusting your opponent to stay out of spoilers or PMing me, though.

The monkey hurls a javelin that plinks harmlessly off of Bruno's armor, clattering to the ground in K10.

the areana ate my post. re-posting edit

As we discussed in the recruitment thread, ignore the 'you don't need to let people know when fighting defensively' post, that's going to be public knowledge for the time being.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

After avoiding harm from the projectile, Bruno mounts Esmaralda with his characteristic speed. Now that battle is joined he regains his typical fury. Raising his lance to the sky, he yells Have at ye, Monkey man! and launches a wad of phlegm. The battle has begun in earnest.

GM:
I rolled well over a 20 to mount Esmeralda in the list post, but if you wish me to roll again:
ride: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

Bruno Only:
You don't need to roll again. Also you still have a move or standard action available.

Not Charan's turn yet.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

GM:
Ya. I really think the Std action charge is cheesy so I tend to see if people stand their ground. If they do, it's their fault. His turn.

Charan's turn, Bruno and Esmarelda are in squares KL0809.

Did anything happen, or did the spit evaporate mid air?

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

It made a nice muddy spot about two yards in front of Bruno.

Ewh.

Repeat.

1d20 ⇒ 6

Your turn.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

The javelin sinks in the sand to Bruno's right. Having given his enemy a fair chance, he spurrs Esmaralda into action, racing across the sand in a plume of dust. Bruno puts his skills to the test, attempting to goad Esmaralda into biting at the same time as his lance contacts the little monkey. He succeeds, and dwarf and camel descend upon Charan in a storm of furr and fury.

charge to D/E-09/10

dice:

attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
damage: 2d8 + 20 ⇒ (2, 4) + 20 = 26
ride: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
attack(Esmerelda): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
damage(Esmeralda): 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

Attack:25
Damage:26
Attack(Esma):17
Damage(Esma):7

Bruno Only:
You're not able to charge from KL0809 to DE0910 because of the big-ass pillar in the way. I think you mentioned before that a camel isn't actually 10 ft. wide, but I don't think it's unreasonable to think that a 10 ft. long camel who is war trained, wearing barding, carrying an armored dwarf, and moving at charging speed may need a bit of room to the sides. Also, regardless of that, the rules say "If any line from your starting space to the ending space passes through a square that blocks movement, slows movement, or contains a creature (even an ally), you can't charge." Without charging, I don't believe you can make it to Charan and still have an attack from both Bruno and Esmarelda, but if you still want to move to DE0910 and attack for 14, you can.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

GM:
Well crap. For some reason I didn't realize that. I see how it happened, but I never thought of Esmeralda starting in a blocked space like that. Not until you mentioned it. That's what I get for trying to do two characters at once, I guess.
Disappointing indeed.
Could I move and attack for 23 hit /13 damage for me and ignore Esmaralda's attack as it would be pointless?
I had such a good description written up too.

Take as long as you like. I'm in no hurry. :P

Bruno Only:
Yeah, that was why we moved the pillars and changed the mounted rules in the first place, though if you had used your surprise round move action to go 10 ft. to the right you could have still charged. Anyways, you can certainly use that attack and damage roll, just go ahead and update your actions.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

updated actions
Bruno, realizing suddenly that he doesn't have a clear charge lane, urges Esmeralda around the pilar in the way, then cautiously nudges her forward before engaging at reach with his lance.
Same destination squares, no charge
Attack: 23
Damage: 13
It was such a glorious description too :(

Block, Punch.

Defensive punch at Bruno: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

"Urrrghh..." Charan moans.

Which seems to entirely explain his lack of usual vigor today.

Charan deftly pushes the tip of the lance away as Bruno bears down on him, drawing some surprised gasps from the crowd, who are used to seeing the lance stab straight through people.

I'm assuming a 5-ft. step toward Bruno in order to make the attack.

Charan steps quickly forward. Though he's apparently somewhat hungover, he manages to land a solid leaping punch on Bruno's side, compressing the armor inwards.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Dice+GM:

Ride: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Failed quick dismount.
Double move; dismount/draw H. Pick
Esmeralda touch attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
DC 13 fort save or sickened for 1d4 ⇒ 1 rounds

The monk's rock-hard fist seems to pass theough Bruno's chain mail. With a grunt he drops to the ground and releases his hold on his lance. He draws a nasty looking heavy pick in its place.
Esmeralda feels the shift in tactics and initiates her own assault. She takes a step back (5 ft) and launches a vile wad of stomach bile and half digested grain at the enemy.

Ranged touch attack:
If hit: DC 13 Fort

Um.. There doesn't seem to be an actual number for that touch attack.

It was an 8, it missed. Charan's turn.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Sorry about that. It was late.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Attacking Bruno. 5 ft step if necessary.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Bruno blocks the blow with his shield. He circles his foe, stepping around him opposite Esmarelda, and gives a whoop to command the attack. The camel-dwarf team attack as one, testing if the monk's seemingly invulnerable defense can handle two attackers.

dice+GM:

We will need some square arbitration here as we seem to have lost where exactly we are.
Bruno 5' steps around Charan to flank with Esmaralda. They both attack. Esmaralda will 5' step up if necessary. If she is 10' or more away, she will charge and my attack will loose 2 points. Damage is unchanged.
Because I'm not mounted I loose 2 attack and 1 damage. I gain the 2 attack back from flanking.
attack : 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
damage : 1d6 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
attack(E) : 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
damage(E) : 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Unless I've forgotten something. Pretty sure I got it all this time.
Attack: 26
Damage: 11
Attack(E): 21
Damage(E): 9

"Blarg.."

Charan goes down.

Gonna go ahead and call it now. With Esmerelda, I really don't have a shot of winning barring lucky double 20's. :P

That's a yield then? You forfeit?

Yar, if Esme can hit that hard that accurately, I'm pretty toast.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Bruno wins then? Should I describe it? Does a forfeiting opponent get incinerated by the arena or are they removed? How would you like to work this, GM

Goes down implies you now have a target on the ground that you can finish at your leisure. Not so much a forfeit as a fast-forward. :P

Well apparently the monkey has gone all coup-de-graceable for you, Choon.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

if that's how you want to do this.
Bruno smiles over his foe.
Hehehehe, both 'o ye, can't hold Y'er liquor. he says before bringing his pick to bear.

Coup de Grace:

2d6 + 18 ⇒ (6, 6) + 18 = 30
Max damage!

Fort DC 30 or die

Yar, he be dead as a duck a' walked on a landmine.

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the average wild duck weighs between 1 and 1.3kg. With most landmines requring around 5kg of pressure for detonation, and even the most sensitive requiring more than 1.5kg, I think our hypothetical duck would be fine.

But Charan is way dead. Bruno wins. Even though he used a x2 critical modifier for his pick.

Scarab Sages

He mis-aimed a little...

That means +2 VP and how much gold?

as a duck a' walked on an armed landmine.

That'd be 700 gp.
