The second time I've seen mine it was paired with a horrible item. The writing was very bad, there was no formatting, the idea as old as fantasy genre and the creation price wasn't half of the buying price.
At that time I started doubting my item. Is pairing really a telltale of where the item is ranked?

I think it's mostly us being supersititious, with the whole "where things are paired" and "pairing frequency" thing, but I don't understand the math behind the voting system well enough to say that with much certainty.
I do know that there still seem to be a lot of people using the "neither" button when presented with two equally bad items (I've yet to hear of someone using it for equally good items), which means that pairing gets thrown back into the queue for someone else to vote on it. This is why if you hit "neither" you may have that pairing bubble up again almost immediately, especially if you've already voted on most of the other pairings still in the queue. So if you're not seeing your item dozens and dozens of times it MAY mean that everyone who sees it is immediately voting either for or against it.
That said, sometimes probability is cruel and you might just randomly be delt your item several times at random, regardless of whether it's being shuffled back into the pile with any frequency.
Now, after multiple days of voting, I'm starting to see items that are much more evenly matched, for better or for worse (at least IMHO). I'm not sure if that's actually a thing or if it's just a stroke of luck. If it is a thing, then the item you see your item up against may be an indication. It may also mean that the "neither" button starts getting used more frequently.
Regardless, I still haven't seen my item, so I'm hoping it means that everyone who sees it is voting it up, so it's not staying in the queue for very long. But I can't say with any certainty that's true.

Thank you very much. I've been busting my ass trying to understand the math behind the system.
Now that I think about it, you are likely correct. Items that I've been avoiding kept popping back up.

I haven't really been seeing the items get more evenly matched. The best items so far have been up against some pretty bad ones. Also, I think unless you have a very high number of samples, you wouldn't particularly want to try to put items of similar quality against each other in Condorcet pairing, though the Condorcet I'm most familiar with involves a long list and ranking them all in order, so I could be wrong.

This is what I'm trying to figure out. The rough method they're using generally involves a ranked or weighted system, but all the examples of how it's supposed to work that I've found generally use a much smaller number of "candidates" up for vote. With them doing the two items, vote for the better one method, I'm not sure if the random pairing system really is completely random or if it's more complex than that.
I think we're all looking for signs and omens. Because, you know, gamers aren't notoriously superstitious or anything. *hides lucky dice*

This is incorrect. We simply try to provide a pair of items that no one has voted one way or the other yet.
It has nothing to do with the previous history of either item. If a pair is shown more than once, it means it was a tie, a bunch of people got the same pair at just about the same time, or all possible pairings have been seen once and we've moved on to stuff voted on only once.

I've seen quite a bit of those. Also, many of them seem to use lycanthropy as the main ability. I really didn't like most of those.

Ross, so it has nothing to do with the relative "ranking" of either of those items. Are you sure? Eg, are you sure the API you are using isn't including such things to generate the next pair? (obv also selecting un-voted on pairs as you say)
Both myself and others seem to have reported that good items seem to be paired against good items and bad items vs other bad items. I am prepared to believe this is observer bias if you say so...

I have (stupidly) missed the submission deadline on account of being engrossed with PFO.
However I still found my item (of which I never spoke to anyone)!
Better said a very close version of it... what are the odds.
Needless to say this version was even better than what I likely would have done so I am no longer feeling too bad about missing to submit.

Just my two cents, but based on what he's said, I think it might be a bit of both. If people are using the "equally good/bad" button the way they should be, we might be getting to a point in the voting where a lot of item pairs that are on pretty equal footing show up more frequently because a lot of people are choosing the "can't decide" option. So it might be some observer bias, but also just that there are more evenly matched pairs up for voting right now since they're being skipped and therefore have less votes than pairs where one item is very clearly superior.
Same idea as what was being stated earlier with some of the items people aren't as fond of seeming to pop up again and again. If people are refusing to vote on an item at all because they don't like it, it's going to spend more time in the "I need more votes" pool.

I've seen my item three times now. I don't really know how many items I've voted on, but I've done so for hours and hours over the last week, to the point that there are some entries I've literally seen more than twenty times. I haven't seen a new item in days. I think I might be done, honestly.
You have a rather appropriate avatar then...

I have yet to see my own item and am getting items I have seen many times over.
I did see an item that was somewhat similar to mine though, which I am not so happy about. It took the same slot and had two of the same spells in its creation requirements. And the items are not one of the common tropes. I think mine was better, but it was still not nice to see.
