Just like the title says...I thought my item had unique effects, only to discover while voting that I had inadvertently mimicked the effects of an existing spell without knowing it. *sigh*

Any other realizations of woe brought about by the start of voting?

Well, I realized a week and a half ago a formatting error I made (and hopefully that's all!).

As someone who doesn't subscribe/buy ever single Paizo product (oh to be single with no bills again), i live in constant fear that some aspect of my item duplicates something already published that I've never seen. The PRD goes along way towards helping in this regard, but it doesn't cover everything.

I realized shortly after submitting that I had used passive voice in one section of my entry. Bolted upright from a deep sleep with that "Oh poop!" feeling when I realized it.

After reviewing so many items, including some really good ones, I realized that my item also is SIAC. I still think it is well-written and balanced, but bleh.

However, I am pleased to report that I am very inspired to put together some new items and really show my stuff next year.

Meh. Live and learn.

Although...

If you want to take heart regarding your perception of your item - check out the judges comments on the Wondrous Item for the eventual winner of RPG Superstar last year.

Raptoring Gloves. Weak Keep and two Rejects, with some notes about how it was not all that exciting and possibly SIAC.

So maybe not all hope is lost just yet. :)

I think at least one spell in a can item has made every single RPG SS. One of my favorites was called 1000 blossoms, essentially air-walk in a can, but it was well written and evocative. Don't get hung up on it too much.

Next year I'll consider submitting a spray can that casts a spell on the subject...

I'm certain that will go over well, both a joke item and a spell in a can. Maybe if you try hard enough you can break every single guideline with a single item.
