Is a Wizard dip wise for a Gunslinger?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So I rolled up a new 1st level character for PFS to play a Thornkeep module (it was awesome). I rolled up a Gunslinger (Musket Master) and had a huge amount of fun with it and I think I want to make this my primary PFS character.

Stats:
Str 10
Dex 19
Con 10
Int 12
Wis 14
Cha 10

Human
Feats: Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot.
Traits: Reactionary and Vagabond Child

My thinking was to bring it up to level 3 This would mean by then I'd have reloading as a free action and rapid shot.

Then at level 4 take a dip into Wizard, specifically Foresight school. This grants a +1 on initiative, always being able to act in a surprise round and that neat Prescience ability (for important, 'lord, please don't let my gun jam now' shots). That would bring my initiative up to a monstrous +14 (+5 dex, +1 forewarned, +4 familiar, +2 trait +2 Gunslinger Initiative) I would also get true strike as a spell (which also conveniently has no somatic components).

What I'm hoping with this build is that at the start of the round, I'll always be able to get two shots off which are essentially always just need to hit 10+size+deflection.

First question: Is it really worth losing the +1 BAB and being a level behind? Secondly, does the crunch all add up?

Considering your Dex, I don't think a +1BAB will make any difference. At 5th level get Arcane Armor Training, because as a wizard you might run into trouble in that area.

I was actually thinking of just a single level dip to get those abilities and go straight back on the Gunslinger path. To me, those abilities look crappy for a Wizard but awesome for a Gunslinger. Quickest gun in the west and all that.

I'm still relatively new to Pathfinder and just wanted to get some advice before committing.

I agree with Kyros, the BAB probably doesn't matter too much, considering you have a high dex, full BAB and attack touch AC.
The only problem I see is that you get the iteratives a level later.

True Strike is a standard action though, so it would take up one turn, but might be nice for that first shot when you have surprise

Prescience seems more useful for a "OMG don't let me miss now!" shots than "don't let it jam", since you have to decide before using it. And if necessary you can always quick clear your gun too

If you take a dip into Cleric of Cixyron, you can use Wisdom for attack rolls with Muskets.

Guided Hand feat makes this possible.

Liberty's Edge

I think that you've discovered some great synergy here. Bravo!

Except that that replaces the Dex modifier. It's "instead" not "in addition".

And Gunslinger would want high dex for the Gun Training ability too.

I considered this but Dex also helps me greatly with reflex saves and AC. In theory, I could just use medium armour but then I would also lose the Gunslinger's Nimble ability (which adds AC as well) and knock down my movement by 10ft which I wouldn't be very keen on in case a melee character manages to get past our front line and try to chew me up.

A wizard dip would also allow the use of some pretty nifty wands (true strike, shield, infernal healing, protection from evil being at the top of my list), and cantrips are always worthwhile (just keep rolling armor failure until they work). You could even take a greensting scorpion or compsognathus for even more initiative.

The familiar's already figured into the +14 initiative but I hadn't thought about the wands. Wand of Infernal Healing is always useful in-between encounters. They're PFS legal aren't they?

You might take spellslinger or make Divination a focus school, with evocation on the side... If you went the cleric route and has wisdom instead of DEX you might want to have higher wisdom.

It's tough veering away from the Gunslinger because it is a fantastic full level class. However, aside from slowing your progression to Signature Deed, I don't see it hurting you much. I'd suggest dipping after 6th level. That way you're adding Dex to all your shots, past the point of feat necessity, and shooting three times with rapid shot on a full-attack.

With one lvl dip in wiz armor training would be a great choice as it will remove a 10% failure which is great for mithril chain shirt, since swift is not normally needed, especially rounds where you cast. And with wands and scrolls you can cast all kinds of spells which would help, like helping hands.

Arcane failure doesn't matter for wands and true strike, and foresight is excellent for anyone.

It's a powerful dip for most characters and especially yours for sure. Check out spellslinger too, and either take it now or after 5-7, as gunslinger levels are much less exciting after 7.

Divination focus is the plan. I considered the Cleric route but most of the good Grit abilities are passive rather than 'spend a point to' so I have 14, 1 for my 'never spend for passives' and another 'just in case' grit point. Plus then I'd lose AC and Gun Training at 5th level (6th if I take a Wizard dip) adds my Dex Bonus to attacks with the Musket.

Grand Lodge

Well, Crusader Cleric of Cixyron will allow you to pick up a free Weapon Focus(Musket), and you can choose the Artifice Domain for Mending, and then choose Variant Channeling.

Combine Variant Channeling with a Consecrated Weapon(Musket) to deliver Channel effects.

Dark Archive

Gunslinger eldritch knight would be an interesting combination.

Ahhh, I had missed that. Good catch!

Shadow Lodge

Don't forget those semi-useful gun spells, such as Bullet Shield, Abundant Ammunition, and Reloading Hands.

Being able to cast abundant ammunition is the main reason why I'd approve of a gunslinger level-dipping into spellcaster. Especially in PFS where every GP counts.

Liberty's Edge

I love this idea, way to go!

better initiative, surprise round attacks, wands-- amazing

and there is no real 12th lvl gunslinger ability that you would be missing.

also, to get even more initiative there is a good ioun stone (dusty rose cracked) that is +1

Shadow Lodge

Make sure to pick up a wand/scroll/something of Named Bullet if you can. Pricey, but does amazing things to your gun.

Add in Locate Weakness to roll your damage twice and take the better.

Stabilize powder is a really good one to - second level, less likely to misfire.

+1 to spellslinger. In my opinion, don't bother withe arcane armor training: Sacrifice the 2 level 1 spells you will get for weapon abilities on the fly (remember to get pearls of power so you can do this for every battle)
