Core Rulebook: Paperback or Hardback?

Product Discussion

Topic is pretty self explanatory. I'm finally getting the core rulebook, and I'm wondering if I should get it in paperback or hardback. I prefer hardbacks in style, but if the paperback is more durable, I'll probably get it. I'd love to hear the rationale behind your recommendation as well.

Thanks!

As an RPGer for years and years and spending hundreds of dollars on books and manuals, go with hardback for core books. I play every week and my books get a bit of wear-n-tear. Paperback don't survive as well so I tend to buy accessory books as paperback rather than core books that get used more often.

Now if you can get used to it and have a tablet like an iPad, PDF versions come in very handy and cut down on weight in the long run. I have the Core Rulebook, APG, all the Ultimate books in hard cover and all the other books in PDF form. But now I tend to use the PDF versions almost always.

Hope this helps.

Does it exist in paperback?

I hope not - most paperback books I have encountered with 300+ pages fall apart under their own weight.

The core rule book only exists in Hardcover.

Nope.

As far as I know, softcover/paperback versions of the Core Rulebook (and any hardcover books released in our Pathfinder RPG line) are unofficial and unendorsed by Paizo Publishing. People claiming to sell paperback versions have likely printed and bound such books up on their own small-scale machinery. Such counterfeit books are more likely to have defects and/or contain errors that have been corrected in more recent, official printings of the books.

As everyone else has said, the Core Rule book is a hardback book. Out of curiosity, where are you seeing it offered as a softcover book???

The only softcover version of the Core Rulebook that I am aware of is the Pathfinder Beta Rulebook. Paizo printed a limited run for playtesting back in 2008 and sold them at GenCon.

(I only know that because I had a player show up with one a while ago...)

Thanks, that helps a lot. I prefer hardback anyways, so it's good to know that it's a better choice structurally as well.

On Amazon. I wonder if it's the beta version as Haladir mentioned above or if someone put it together themselves as Patrick suggested. Hmmm, maybe I should contact Amazon?

Amazon's descriptions of Hardback/paperback is pretty unreliable when it comes to RPG books. Box set are often described as paperback

EDIT: those paperbacks are all from other sellers, who obviously are not up to scratch when it comes to listing details of their products:
