Interesting / Odd familiar list

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

If one already exists, that would be cool. But if it doesn't I am looking to make a list of interesting/odd/ possibly cryptozoological familiars. Stats wouldn't be needed if the animal was close enough to one already statted up, e.g. Snow leopard-cat, medium.

I am not looking for anything that would belong on the Improved Familiars list.

Ideas I already had:

Platypus

Koala

Llama

Red Panda

Wallaby

Mountain Goat ( thought this would be cool for a dwarf sorcerer)

Flying Fox

Sea Otter

Any more cool, unfamiliar Familiars?

Iguana
Komodo Dragon
Penguin
Giant Butterfly/Wasp/Bee/Mosquito

Penguin! That would quirky but way cool.

Sovereign Court

I've got a magpie familiar. I use the rules for raven familiars (+3 appraise, obviously). It's a paint job really, but the magpie suits my wizard more.

Shadow Lodge

Echidna (while we're talking monotremes)
Horned Lizard
Tazmanian Devil
Bird-of-Paradise (similar to a Thrush?)
Poison-Dart Frog
Flying Squirrel

I really like the poison dart frog, too. Has possibilities...

Male Platypus are actually highly poisonous, delivering their venom through a spur in their ankles. It's generally not fatal to humans, but the pain is incapacitating and can linger for months.

As for new familiars....

Savannah cat

Goose

You can add all the poultry (duck, hen, rooster, turkey…).

Rabbit

Newt

Salamander

Some other species of birds of prey: harrier, eagle, vulture…

Birds: seagull, cormorant, peacock,…

Corgi. I looked but I couldn't find the stats for dog as a familiar. Am I missing something?

A marmoset! I loved my last one!

Squirrel, the non-gliding variation. +3 Climb to the master. Or maybe acrobatics.

Pig

Puffer fish

Moray eel

Sponge

Muscovy Ducks are boss. like heavy hawks that hiss and swim with a rend attack.

Small Dragon Turtle

Elemental Animal from the standard familiar list

...those are the first three on your list? I think an anthropomorphic bear might be more appropriate for you. hehe.

For an actually suggestion, how about the drop bear?

they are all part of my suggested options for improved familiars

many fantasy characters tame small fey or demons as familiars

Patchouli Knowledge Tamed Koakuma as a familiar, a young succubus. some fans assume she uses the right to read hentai manga as a bribe.

there were a few demigods in Greek mythology that had nymph pets that served a similar role to a familiar. they were just obscure stuff i lack the effort to dig up.

Young outsiders feel more like a cohort than anything I think. The idea of having an actual outsider for your witch familiar sounds pretty cool to me though.

The Exchange

I was flipping through Bestiary 2 the other day and noted that the Comsognathus is approved for the familiar list. (Picture a chicken-sized bipedal dinosaur with little, needle-like teeth. Provides an Initiative bonus, of all things...)

Skull & Shackles offered stats for the dodo and dwarf caiman (mini-gator), but in so doing ignored the usual size limitation. Besides, I'm not sure what message a wizard with a dodo familiar is sending, but it probably isn't "Quail before my power!"

Cassowary
Dragon Fly (certainly not enough bug familiars)
Humming Bird

well to me, it also sounds more like a cool familiar than a cohort.

look at the Warlocks on WoW with their Succubus and Felguard Familiars.

Look at Patchouli Knowledge and her Young Succubus Familiar Koakuma

Look at Solembum the Werecat Familiar and his herbalist mistress in the Eragon Franchise

Look at Hazuki and her Fairy Cat thing Familiar from Moon Phase that can transform from a cat into a pixie

Look at Edward Elric, whom, to save his younger brother, effectively performed a process very similar to creating a familiar from scratch using a form of scientific magic. he never called him a familiar, but he served a role of similarly great importance

Look at Earl Ciel Phantomhive, whom trapped the Demon Sebastian Michaelis and made him his familiar in a quest for revenge in exchange for the loss of his soul towards the end.

a lot of these examples are Anime, 1 MMO, 1 Book Series, and 1 Bullet Hell Shooter. but a good portion of the examples can be considered fairies or outsiders. one construct.

The Exchange

Also the American ringtail, the seven-banded armadillo, the potoroo, the kittiwake and the marine iguana!

Again, should I be worried that most of those are small child like creatures? Especially since some are associated with seduction in the original myths (although, in fairness, what female mythological creature isn't associated with that really?) Still, people tend to see familiars as small or tiny. If they are 'young,' then eventually they would grow less so and remove their template. Sure, you could cite a long developmental period, but this is a system with elves and wizards can eventually gain immortality as a capstone.

Plus, just because they get scaled back by a template, it doesn't mean they aren't massively overpowered for a familiar. A lot of your pathfinder examples have a ton of SLA's and other supernatural abilities, and rebalancing that can be a pain. This thread is more about weird animals to use as reskins and such for the base familiar, which can be fairly easily accepted by a GM.

And again back to making suggestions: how about something comically immobile? Like a small fern, venus fly trap, or sea anemone.

that is why they all require improved familiar

there are a lot of familiars with powerful spell like abilities. most of them no different from a succubus or nymph in that regard.

a familiar's spell like abilities become worthless past 10th level, a succubus or nymph's, past 12th, when 4 levels ago, you may was well have them be using wands to do everything because that succubus's suggestion is going to fail and because the nymph's summon natures ally 4 is going to die in one attack.

at best, you made your familiar a speed bump on the road to death.

so back to the wand of magic missile you go, just now, you have an awesome UMD an Awesome diplomacy and many languages.

....I think I just found the perfect 'odd familiar' : The stoat: the only animal that hunts by acting like it is high as a kite. .

As a GM, I would make it a reskin of a weasel with a facinate ability that only works on rabits. Preferably through Perform (breakdance).
