Elen speaks to her familiar in a tongue that sounds like chiming bells.

Celestial:
"So the elf is not evil, but the bird is?

knowledge(planes): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 18 Imp CR 2 = DC 12 to identify, 18 gives me one additional bit of knowledge, presumably recognizing that they can shapechange into animals

Surely a transformed imp, then... well, perhaps a fiendish raven, but why would he bother? Be on your guard, my love."

She turns to murmur in Numair's ear:

Qadiran:
"Watch that one, oh dancer of the sands and the sun. Saranae and Desna alike would abominate the choices he has made in life -- and at such a young age as well. Truly a shame. His raven, I am certain, is a fiend from Hell, most likely a transformed imp. I suppose if he is picked for this expedition, we would have no choice but to tolerate his company, but we should not trust him for an instant."

The Wizard, just about to sit, hears the offer from the Minotaur, shrugs, and decides to join him. He takes a single step towards the table and then, in an instant, is suddenly sitting with the bull-man. Somehow he crossed 15 or more feet instantly without a sound or gesture. The crow on his shoulder seems unphased by this movement. It appears you appreciate the value of a wizard, and I appreciate that. Might I have the honor of your name good sir. I would prefer to know with whom I drink.

After introductions Azaraunt manages to flag down a waitress and orders bottle of dry Varisian wine.

Pat scowls in the direction of the self-claimed wizard. "Hellknight." She says the word almost as if it were a curse. "What prey tell does the Order wish to have with Tsar?"

She then looks to the minotaur and the pale one. "I too feel some discomfort in such a large setting. Unfortunately, it is almost the only way I can convey the information to you all, including the reason why I so wish to walk upon the cursed soil of Tsar. When you hear my tale, you will hopefully wish to take up my cause." Pat shakes her head, all thoughts of drinking now gone. She had much to do and little time.

To the others, she turns and looks at them each in turn. "I have to return to my post soon, but I wish to tell you all that I can. I'll answer questions one at a time, but bear with me as I go." She takes the seat that Numair offers.

"Half-orc, the reason that I wish to return is twofold. First, my blood brother is one of the fifty who walked into Tsar itself, upon General Zelkor's orders. In the century since the siege, none of them have ever walked back out." Pat pauses a moment to let it sink in.

"The other reason I wish to enter is that, while I serve Sarenrae these days, I once served another god directly, you know him as Aroden. I was once his servant and scout."

Numair murmurs a proverb from the Book of Light and Truth, Sarenrae's holy text, in response.

Qadiran:
Keep the serpent close beneath your boot. If you cannot pluck out his fangs, crush him beneath your heel.

His eyebrows raise at Aroden's name.
That is an astounding tale. Please, continue. We wait with bated breath.

I don't think it's that bad but I have a lot of experience multi-tasking in a PBP. If you have a hard time working it as a narrative just assume the conversations are occurring at different times and break them up with page breaks as I did here.

Trust me, an overly active is a good problem to have. Slow PBPs are not long for this world.

OK I'll admit this is getting a bit hairy. The only other way that I can do this is just put up a wall of text and let everyone mull over it for awhile. Either that, or I just pm everyone, but that kinda takes the fun out of it. I would prefer the former myself, but it'll take an hour or so to type up (no biggie, I just can't do it until after I get home tomorrow). If you prefer the other way, and just leave the tavern open for regular discussion, I'm okay with that too (like I said, I'm still new to running a PbP). Let me know ooc by tomorrow night and I'll go with the votes. I would like to hear from everybody, either active or hanging back.

The elf raises his hand, identifying himself as a Pathfinder in case his wayfinder fails to fully mark him. Speaking with his own tongue he responds to Lt. Ripley. Any servant of House Thrune knows of duty. I salute your blood brother and his dedication to it. He gives a crisp Chelazian salute, his red and black robes rippling as he does so. And my dear lady, the Hellknights do not care a whit for Tsar. My services are from the Paracountess in her roll as leader of the Cheliax faction of the Pathfinder Society. She has wisely surmised that arcane talent will be needed if any measure of success is to be gleaned from a foray into this evil city. Know also that Cheliax opposes Orcus and all demonkind with all its strength. We are a diabolical nation well stepped in the the Asmodean Disciplines and will not abide demons.

Sorry for my slow response - boards are crazy still and I was running a home game until just a few minutes ago.

Active PBPs are great, but rooms like this just makes me feel like I need to fight for attention or just give up on being chosen for the game. I also hate forming friendships with characters that don't get chosen and feel like I've wasted a bunch of time if I don't get chosen. I really don't want to just be sitting in the tavern for over a week. My character doesn't even drink and wouldn't hang out here long after her meal is done anyway.

Well I'll agree I'm not a big fan of the super long recruitment time. I don't particularly like investing days and days into RP before the game's actually started. LM, I forgot if you mentioned a reason for wanting to wait so long.

As for competing for attention, there's no need to feel that way. Plenty of people have acknowledged Lavinia. Ruul even paid her a compliment - which you never replied to. =(

@ Ruul - Originally, I wanted to give everyone time to work up some characters and play around with some ideas. I also wanted a little time to try and figure out maptools, which I haven't been able to do much of yet. I know that its a pretty popular program and we could make good use of it.

To be honest, it seems that recruitment has died off. It's possible that we could semi-close the recruitment thread and go with what we have, but I am still a little hesitant. I have one guy who posted early, but had to drop off this week because of a family emergency. He is supposed to be back soon, but it's a wait and see.

Also, if we were to kick this off I should let everyone know that I won't be on the next two weekends. This week we are going to a ren faire, so I can post on Sunday. Next weekend, we'll be in Houston for my sis-in-law's wedding. I won't be back on until the next Monday.

With all that said, we can start now, but only if everyone agrees to it. That includes people who have posted on the recruitment threads, but not here yet. I can handle 8 people. I'll need a final count before we start. Chew on it a bit before saying anything. If we are over 8 for the final count, I'll need to decide who is in or out.

From my part, I find that some free form roleplay as we have been doing sometimes helps fleshing out character details and behaviors.

However, if it runs for a long time, and with a lot of people involved, I agree with most that Lavinia and Ruul said - mostly, if you actually get involved (or dedicate yourself, or have time available for) a lot of pre-game RP, the frustration in case you are not chosen increases immensely - I can confirm this from personal experience. Actually, it happened to me also the other way around - a group of players was picked and I was not - I was a little frustrated because I had invested and was really enjoying the roleplay at the local tavern, but also some of the players that were picked got frustrated that I was not being picked :D

So, it can get messy.

On the other hand, it may create the incorrect impression that some are more interested than others, simply because they post more in the free form roleplay (some people, while having enough time available for a PbP, may not have time to post 5 or 6 or 10 times a day in a pre-game RP session) - this can sometimes lead to "unfair" decisions.

Another aspect is the "mostly quiet type characters" - if someone wants to play this kind of personality, it may create difficulties in that character's involvment with the others, even if you populate your posts with a lot of monologues and inner thoughts.

That being said, I am all in favor of closing the recruitment process (at the DM's discretion of course), and start the game itself - mainly because you can also free-form roleplay with the "chosen" characters, in a more controlled environment, also allowing time to flesh out your character, interact with NPCs, etc, etc, but all to a lesser, more manegeable scale. And with less chances for frustration at not being picked,

Just my two cents ;)

A middle aged man with graying temples comes into the door. His clothing is simple and eastern, gray with a adamantine chain about his waist and over his shoulder. The man looks over his shoulder as he comes in like he is dreading someone's company, but with relief sighs and continues into the tavern. He smiles a bit at the people in the packed tavern and finds himself a stool. Quietly and to no one in particular, he mutters something in Tian that is rhythmic and smooth.

Tian:
"How happy the duck is
Surrounded with friends or foes
It matters little"

And then he orders some wine and seems lost in his thoughts.

Bao listens respectfully to the questions sipping his tea. It seems like there is no particular target in this mission. More scouting and information gathering. But why now? He wonders to himself.

He nods in reply and replies, "I do not understand your comment about 'The clanliege prefers to spend his hours spinning takes rather than be the honorable warrior he might have once been.' What is this spinning? And what do you think he should be doing?"

And asked appropriately in a conversation to allow proper back and forth dialog that PbP inhibits:
"How is the Lantern Lodge particularly interested in Tsar, besides wanting any new information at the same time as all other Society factions? Has something happened lately to trigger interest in this slumbering city?

"Should I be out with the others receiving this briefing?"

My vote is just post the information up, close recruitment and get things started ASAP. I completely disagree that PBP with eight players is any slower than PBP with three players. In fact I think having eight people posting generates a lot more content and moves the game forward. The best PBPs I've been in had high player counts. The problem with big groups is having a DM who doesn't post a lot (that's not an accusation in any way, not referring to anyone specific).

M

Fulanke acknowledges the elf at the table and doing a quick scan of the others at the table comes over and has a seat. Upon closer examination, it would seem that though his dress, manner and language are all eastern, he himself lacks the physical traits common to easterners. If one had to place his country of birth, it would likely be Cheliax. He speaks his next lines to the table in the common tongue without a hint of accent.

"There is a freedom
Within the bounds of the law
The lawless know not."

Are you from the motherland? I hail from Egorian herself.

I am good either way. I was a latecomer to the Tavern and its discussion but am enjoying it. Of course this character has no problem "talking" over the din of noise. :)

Hearing the strange words, Fulanke sighed a bit and smiled weakly, scratching the back of his head with embarrassment.

"I never learned the mother tongue.
But I still know when it is sung.
A poet and a scribe am I,
with not much else to know me by.
Sumisu Fulanke is how I'm addressed
Fu to some and Sumis to the rest."

He reaches out his hand in greeting, with an expectant look of receiving an introduction.

I'm actually having a blast with my character. I've always wanted to play a poet and PBP makes it so easy!

Be not so little one. To be true, Nihilist must believe no purpose to life. That be not true. Belike life has great purpose. True it is not to make the future better because the future be not. No future. All must end. After the end is nothing.
Life purpose is the separating, the sorting, the decisioning. It is the attempt showing. By attempt to make life better in the now, quality of self is shown. If self is better, may be part of new beginning. For is it not written all things must end. Nothing is a thing. So is written that nothing will end. After nothing will be new beginning. Only better selfs will be part of said new beginning.
Should not all want to be better self? Then must attempt to make now better for all. Be not make some long future better. Many do great evil in name of better long future. One knows not when end will come. If ending come before long future, be then evil done in name of nothing. So not be right choosing. Make now better or at most short future better. Lavinia - Sense Motive: 15:
The concubine comment meant two things. A) It was an example of how his people can be gentle and kind and B) he was expressing his interest in Lavinia. =P

"Most of my kin are not as... well spoken as I am", Ruul explains.

"My tribe lives within the Kortos Mountains just north of Absalom itself", the bull says. "It was a brief journey but by no means an easy one. Shortly after entering Absalom I was sworn in as a Pathfinder. I've almost solely served the Society for the years since."

"The trip here was short as well. The Master of Spells arranged for magical transport nearby and I walked the rest of the way. My legs are strong", he says as he pats a huge thigh. "It was not difficult."

Since she doesn't get out and socialize much, it takes a few moments for his comment to finally click in Lavinia's head. Wait a minute, I think he's gone from just being kind and courteous to actually flirting with me. Also I wonder how soft his fur is...? She pauses a moment to mentally reassess Ruul in a different category other than fellow pathfinder and then continues on.

"No, it doesn't look like you would have any difficulty walking here. I think your thigh is about as big around as my waist. I arrived her via horse rather than spell. The walk would have been to great for me from my family's home in Ustalav."

"Ustalav? My journeys for the Society have never sent me there but I have read the Chronicles of those that have. Is it true that the Midnight Lord is openly worshiped there?"

The minotaur shifts his brawy frame, apparently uncomfortable with the thought.

"Tales of the acts his most devout perform to show their love are quite... detailed."

Seriously. In the link above, scroll down to The Joymaking.

Scrolled down to it and don't know what to say about that. Having taken care of people with multiple amputations, I couldn't imagine anyone doing that for fun.

"Well, not in the area I'm from at least. Most of the people from my home village worship Pharasma, some worship Desna. Unfortunately there are a few who worship Urgathoa, which I suppose goes along with the undead problem that has been plaguing my homeland."

Edit: Sorry Gunser, your warning was too late and yes, that is one messed up deity.

The wizard perks up at the discussion of Ustalav. Always ready to learn more about that land, he listens closely, nodding with the mention of undead plaguing the land. Undead are illegal in Egorian. he explains in a tone that seems to suggest that making them illegal is all you would have to do to fix the problem.

Crunch is complete. I have to go back and recalculate all my scribing and crafting to make sure I have the math right. And I'll likely buy a wand or three still, but its mostly complete. Will work on the background tomorrow.

I apologize if that was overly dark. I just like to share Golarion lore when possible.

Ruul snorts and shifts again.

"All peoples have dark portions in their history. My own were once thralls to the Lord of Beasts. Some even still willingly serve him."

The minotaur shakes his shaggy head, as if to violently dismiss a train of thought.

"But it is not the duty of a Pathfinder to judge. Ours are to explore, cooperate, and report. At least with the company in attendance, it will be a pleasant experience."

The bull doesn't smile (it's not clear if minotaurs can even smile) but his eyes shift on his bovine head in such a way that imply that he's happy.

Azaraunt, Ruul said some stuff to you when you first showed up. I don't know if you wanted to continue that conversation.

It was the second half of my post here.
