What is this about:
Checking interest for a WHFRP campaign (yeah I know, the title was already quite a giveaway)...
The problems:
WHFRP with all its fancy dice and cards does not look like it was made for PBP - I agree, but since FFG claims it can be played like any other RPG we will find a solution for that.
Specials:
Player(s) will have to keep track of certain things (the DM already has enough to do -_-). Keeping track of party tension, fortune pool, party sheet etc. this could be your job!
The good thing:
It's Warhammer - the Old World is one of the best settings out there and the third edition adds an all new flavour to Roleplaying.
About you:
You should have access to the Player's Guide - if you already know the rules, that's even better.
I don't want you to come up with something like I wanna play a swordmaster of Hoeth - we do it the traditional way, everyone draws three careers and is allowed to keep one (I'll do the drawing, you choose).
I only accept active players = people who are able to post at least once per day. If you are new to these boards that is ok, but applicants with a longer posting history always have a slight edge.
About me:
I'm already running several campaigns on these boards and all of them are successes (HRHR). I've been here for quite some time now and with more than 10k sensible posts (yada yada) I count as a reliable DM I guess.
As you may have already guessed by my weirdo English, I'm a non-native speaker, but I try my best not to write (see, I like to-infinitive constructions) too awkwardly.
In the end:
You're still interested - cool - just put all your worries and hopes below this post.
You wanna bribe me? Great, PM me for bank details. *_*

here's a page with some Resources. Character sheets, faqs etc
I'll be interested how you handle the cards mechanic in pbp :)

What exactly do you think is the problem with the cards?
You have to keep track, what cards (actions) you have. Then you have to count the cooldown (which is similar to status effects in PF that last for a certain amount of rounds). Depending on your rolls, you have to choose which line of the card you trigger.

I'm interested and have access through a friend to the complete game. However, I am playing in his game and have done a number of adventures and plan to play in them all with our tabletop gaming group. To get to the point, are you planning to use the premade adventures, cooking up your own, or something in between?
Thanks.

@ Veshly:
I planned to stat with some official material, after a while - depending on how the campaign develops that might change though.
@ Jelani:
Once we have found five willing players I consider "gameworthy", we will do the traditional approach - everyone gets to choose from three randomly selected careers. (so by now we do not have special roles to fill in).

The tasks I would like to divide among the players are:
Someone has to keep the party sheet updated (keep track of party tension and fortune pool)
Someone has to keep track of progress trackers
Someone has to keep track of module specific other special sheets (e.g. the house sheets in Edge of Night).
So, from the top of my head we have three extra jobs.
Then there are some special things that should turn up in your char sheet:
This one is an example of a character converted from my RL group - I ask you to copy it and replace all things that do not fir for your character once we have chosen careers etc.

I've played the hunting lodge one (exact name escapes me) and The Gathering Storm, I'll be a player in other FFG published adventures someday as well. I willing to participate in the adventures I've seen but they are mysteries, bit anti-climatic, I'll also have to be a dumb character as to not spoil things for others. I will not participate in anything that will spoiler me for the adventures yet to run; I owe my long time GM that.
If you are willing to run me under those conditions I'm in; if not I do understand, it's a lot to ask, unreasonable even.

Yeah, if you took the correct part of the box set :)
There were four books in it (at least in the English version) - one is for DM one for mages, one for priests and one has the rules.
After some more thinking about the career determination method - I came up with the following:
1. step: Draw three careers (I'll do that for you)
2. step: Keep one or dismiss all three
3. step: Those who haven't chosen a career up to this point may choose from all those that have been dismissed by other players.
| Zyren Zemerys |
Yeah, it's not like we are starting tomorrow, but once you have careers you can work on your chars - and read the rules simultaneously ;)
If you can't find any of the cards I draw, I can scan them for you.
Jelani:
Agent (Human/Dwarf)
Navigator (any race)
Watchman (Human/Dwarf)
Spazmodeus:
Bounty Hunter (Human/Dwarf/ High Elf/Wood Elf)
Scribe (Human/Dwarf/High Elf)
Zealot (HUman)
Feytharn:
Apprentice Runesmith (Dwarf)
Pistolier (Human)
Forger (Human/Dwarf)
Bilbo:
Bailiff (Human/Dwarf)
Commoner (Human)
Thief (Human/Dwarf/High Elf/Wood Elf)
Mark:
Initiate (Human)
Ratcatcher (Human/Dwarf)
Swordmaster of Hoeth (High Elf)
Wow, interesting mix - no wizard - you should also speak about a good party set-up - I think one should really take the initiate.

Hi Zyren,
Need a bit of advice here. I'm taking the Zealot career, hope to make the transition to Witch Hunter, eventually. Now one of the skills I can train is Piety, with two skill points I can train it. Now according to the rules, I can now curry favor and invoke blessings. Is this right? In the book they only mention Priests doing so.
Also, it would appear that I need to take an insanity but the player's book doesn't have insanity cards in the appendix.
Thanks :)
| Zyren Zemerys |
No Spaz, only priests can invoke blessings - piety is rather used as a skill related to religious knowledge (this is a long lasting rules question, and here's the official answer):
"You have successfully invoked a Blessing, but ..." is the prerequisite of the Curry Favor action card. It is a Support (Flag symbol) card, so i guess anyone can buy it. But noone, beside Priests, can actually use it.
There is a BOOK dedicated to Priests (and one for Wizards) in the Core Set. Guess what, a Zealot, as a Witch Hunter, is not a "Priest Career". They cannot use Priest rules and as such Favors, Equilibrium rules, Blessings, etc. Even if the Witch Hunters, in the Lore, are a branch of the Sigmar's church, they cannot use Priest rules. It's just a non-priest branch.
It's the same for Wizards. A Solider cannot decide to buy a spell action card and cast it; and/or acquire the Channel Power action card & channel power. He simply can't as is.
Now, you insist on cheesing and doing what you want, the game allows that, every few pages it mentions that you, as the GM, can modify as you see fit or to suit your needs. So please, feel free to do as you want. Just put it under "house rules" and don't induce others in creating ninja Witch Hunter priests
The Faith card is mandatory to be able to belong to a Priest Career, and be able to do or buy related things like having Favors and buying/using Blessings. It was already discussed here somewhere, pages were posted.
p.123 of the Player Guide : The Faith Talent.
p.123 of the Player Guide "Learning Blessings" paragraph :
"A priest may only ordinarily learn and invoke blessings with either the Basic trait (which represents simple prayers said to all gods) or with the trait of the god matching his Faith talent card. Non-priests may not learn any divine blessings at all."
A Zealot is not a priest.

From the FAQ:
Zealots can attach an Insanity card they are currently
suffering from to their career sheet. This often allows the socketed
card to benefit from a special effect or interact with another
example. The Zealot career ability allows the player to exhaust
the attached Insanity cards for a benefit – adding fortune dice to a
check equal to the severity of the attached insanity.
As a further note, careers that can socket non-standard cards into
a talent socket can acquire these cards during character creation
or during character development in the same way other careers
acquire talents.
For example, a Zealot could invest creation points or advances to
acquire an Insanity card of his choice (which the Zealot can treat as
a Talent card), even if he has not acquired one during play. However,
unless the Insanity card is currently exhausted, the negative
effects of the Insanity are in play, even if it is not currently socketed
to an active Talent slot – the card functions as both a Talent and an
Insanity card, and abides by the rules and effects of both.

Somebody should really take the initiate because without a healer this already deadly game becomes a real slaughterhouse.
On the other hand, the Ratcatcher with his small but vicious dog is also very cool - and the swordmaster, yeah well...he starts with a magic item and has a great deck of action cards for his fighting styles - great choice for a melee character.
