The rules need a firm but fair GM hand.

As should be true of any table top role playing game.

The problem at some tables is this person is absent. Game works fine where that person is present.

The RAW version of crafting simply puts no constraints on crafting. I think this is good. I don't think people should look at what ends up ultimately being campaign/setting specific restrictions when they read the crafting rules. When you go to craft, what do you need to do? I think the rules are very clear in *how* this works. The when, why, etc should be answered in-game in accordance to your setting.

I like that Sean said the notion that just because you've taken the feat you automatically know how to make every single item associated to it is silly. These things should be worked out by the GM in advance. Belly aching over that aspect of the game simply smells of GMs who don't want to GM.

It's also a good idea to remember that the WBL table isn't a guideline but is what PCs are supposed to have at any given level. If the GM wishes to houserule it so they get more which makes PCs able to craft items well before they're meant to be made, then that isn't the fault of the crafting rules. That's the GM houseruling the problem into existence.

And I'm not trying to turn "houserules" into some dirty word here, but rather stating it matter of factly.

Everyone house rules. The only time I think it is a dirty word is when someone on the forum is lamenting a problem they themselves created with house rules.

the rules are not broken, just because you dont like it doesnt make it broken

people 'argue' about pretty much everything in this game
doesnt mean its broken

Indeed. And yet some people say the word with the same acidic disdain one would normally reserve for any number of derogatory labels.
