Ok, so I'm researching for a new character I wanna play, and have run into a few questions regarding awaken. I tried searching, but I couldn't answers to all my questions.
1. If you awaken your animal companion, what does it gain/lose. The general concenses so far seems it doesn't lose anything its gained, ie hd, feats ect.

2 in order to give it class levels later, how much xp does it start at? Equivelent to 9th level, 11th? 1st?

3 do the +2 hd the spell grant have to be racial? Can they be class levels instead?

Thanks for any help guys!

1) Loses everything being a companion gave it, gains whatever the Awaken spell grants them.

2) It has no xp.

3) Racial, and loses all HD gained by being an Animal companion.

Quick question are you playing the awakened animal as a PC or are you playing a PC with an awakened animal ?

I plan to play a summoning animal driud (ape or lion) and am gathing info to see if gm will allow! He prob will if the comp loses everything, then starts at level 1 0xp.

1. It gains the Magical Beast (augmented animal) type. It gains 3d6 Intelligence, +1d3 Charisma, and +2 HD. The HD are racial, d8s.
2. Not really sure how awakened animals work in PF because they changed level system around a little but I assume you add the 2HD and then it can start working towards its first level at ECL class levels+racial HD? It loses all your animal companion stuff since magical beasts can't be druid companions.
3.They're racials.

EDIT: If you want to keep it you need leadership.

Ok then let me ask you a followup question rules aside what do you hope to get out of awakening this animal ?

I mean are you looking to beef it up mechanically or is this more for RP ?

because if you GM is open to it you could just use the leadership feat to grab a companion who happens to be an awakened animal with class levels 2 levels before you can cast the Awaken spell.

Check out the Advanced Race Guide to figure out the power of your awakened animal.

You could ask to play a Baleful Polymorphed PC.

I esnt it both mechancally and for rp. Mechanically. I sounds awesome to have a gorilla barbarian or lion rogue! And rp wise I love the idea of devoteing resources to awakening my animal compaion into a full member, showing how much I care.

The bigger revervation my gm has is about power level/ numbers on the board, ie at least one summon spell active, me, animal comp. And awakened buddy all being played/rolled by me.

Ok here's an option

animal companion until 7th level when you pickup leadership feat and awaken him, then retroactively change your nature bond to a domain instead or even pick an archetype that makes sense and trades out nature bond for something else.

That way you've just got the awakened companion as a leadership cohort and your summon spells without an animal companion.

Awakened buddies aren't automatically traveling companions.

You lose your Animal Companion benefits when you awaken it, in effect turning it into a normal animal of it's kind + the benefits of awaken, that is 2 racial HD more than a typical member of it's species, ability score boost / change.

Leadership is a good option to keep your Animal Companion near when you awaken it and start advancing it by class level. I'd probably give it one to three class level at first that seems appropriate, probably rogue, ranger or barbarian though I would look for an existing archetype to fit or adapt existing archetype to fit the animal better. Trying to stay close to the animal companions ability scores as an animal companion using the elite modifiers it gets.

Phasics gave a decent option, though I wouldn't usually make it quite that easy to change class features, it should not be a huge problem and helps gameplay go smoother.
