Druids get Beast Shape 3 at lv 8, why do they never get Beast Shape 4? It seems that wild shape stops getting better after lv 12? Thoughts?

Beast Shape 4 is for Magical Beasts *only*, not animals so I Druid wouldn't get it.

The Druid's Beast Shape 3 is only for animals and ignores the Magical Beasts also.

Liberty's Edge

My guess would be that beast shape IV only allows one to become Tiny or Large creature of the magical beast type and druids cannot become magical beasts via wildshape.

but with beast shape iv you get faster speed and a few more abilities like rend which beast shape iii doesn't, so it would help a little with druids

Read the spell. It is for Magical Beasts only.

No, it isn't. It functions as Beast Shape III, but "also" allows you to assume the form of Tiny or Large Magical Beasts. Any Animal forms you take will benefit from the additional abilities granted by Beast Shape IV.

For instance, if a wizard or sorcerer casts Beast Shape IV, and assume an Animal form with rend, the caster will get the rend ability despite the form not being a Magical Beast.

Of course, none of that matters as far as the Druid is concerned, since the Druid never gets Beast Shape IV as part of its wild shape progression.

Wildshape is like the hot Prom date who goes home early :P

you feel like a boss at the prom but afterwards your left hanging for the rest of the evening when things were supposed to get interesting

I agree with that; PF wildshape is far too balanced (perhaps even on the weak side), and has left the fun behind. At least considering the amount of time that goes into finding Animals and comparing their abilities to the Beast Shape charts.

My biggest pet peeve with the Beast Shape spells (and wild shape by extension) is the blanket ability score adjustments; strong and weak forms of the same size get the same penalty or bonus to Strength, and similar for agile/non-agile forms regarding Dexterity. That makes no sense to me.

I sit corrected. I re-read the spell, thanks for clearing that up for me.

It does seem to go along with the druid concept of affinity for animals, plants, and the basic elements that they would not have beast shape 4, since it's for magical beasts. But then again at high level a druid assuming a magical beast form doesn't seem like too much of a stretch to me. However, with the current rules, druids just can't do it.

If you're looking for the ability to change into the form of magical beasts as well as animals, check out the new Shapeshifter base class in the Grimoire Viperian from Magic Skull Games.

The Shapeshifter base class gets numerous shapechanging abilities similar to the druid (but not plants or elementals) but can also assume the form of magical beasts via Beast Shape 4 and the class's own unique Form of the Mythical Beast ability. The Shapeshifter also eventually gains dragon and giant form at higher levels. The class is no mere "spell-less druid", gaining access to alter self, favored form bonuses including favored terrains, and unique form powers along the lines of barbarian rage powers and rogue talents, which can be used when in alternate form.

The Grimoire Viperian sneak preview provides more Shapeshifter class details and a sample character stat block.
