What will your 'profession' be in PFO?

A Processor
Not the crafter which makes the items adventurers need, but the processor who makes the items the crafters need. Buying the raw materials from the harvesters, processing then distributing these goods.

It is my intention to be more of a merchant. I will probably spend most of my time figuring out how to get the goods from this town, to that city.

My ultimate goal would be creating the equivalent of the East India Trading Company. Remain neutral and not affiliated with any town. Bring in large amounts of supplies at low prices. This will make the rulers interested in keeping my supply lines open. Agreeing to never harvest, as long as the raw materials are supplied in sufficient quantities, should keep the harvesters happy. Providing a copious quantities of a wide variety of goods, should keep the crafters happy. Since I would only be transporting the ‘middle’ goods, which are a no use to an adventurer who does not have the appropriate crafting skills, that would make my caravans less attractive of targets.

I am thinking of making exclusive contracts. I will supply all the materials, in sufficient quantities, at reasonable prices, and the crafter only buys from me.

Contracts with the governors. I will supply the town with various food supplies, and wood ect, and they will keep the road safe, and pass laws outlawing (with harsh penalties) the hijacking of caravans.

Contracting with the bandits. I will supply your camp with the supplies necessary so you can focus on killing, but you must never attack my brand of caravan.

Contracting with guards to transport goods.

It is going to be fun!

I unfortunately cannot check the Pathfinder Online website as I am at work right now (security issue). But how does the profession/crafting work for the game? Can you strictly be a crafter or have a profession? Will you level in doing that alone?

I think it would be great to craft magic items, but can you do so in the safety of the city(ies), or do you have to adventure, as well?

Depends on what you mean by "level". There aren't really levels in PFO, it's a Skill-Based system, which means your overall level is really just the sum of your various Skill levels, if you want to think of it that way. What that means for you is that you won't "level" as a Bard, but you will "level" as a Crafter. But even that's misleading.

The reality is that you'll get better at your chosen Profession as you train the Skills that make you better (and acquire the Merit Badges for same).

You will be able to train any and all craft skills as long as you meet prerequisite skills it seems. It plans on having a skill system like Eve so using that as a example, in Eve I am skilled in mining, refining, planetary interactions, researching, manufacturing. All "craft" skills. Also I'm a decent combat pilot.

You should be able to craft in the cities but your materials to do so will have to come from somewhere. So you will need start up capital or materials in some fashion.

Oh, ok, so it is completely skill based, no levels. I am ok with that. There have been some very good skill based systems I have enjoyed.

I have never played Eve Online, so unfortunately that example I cannot relate to. But I do understand what you are saying.

Yes, had assumed attaining the materials/components there would be risk involved, at least with the higher end items. It is possible I may try to do that myself, or hire out for it. It also sounds like you may need to hire caravans to help transport your harvests, I actually like that!

Actually, I like the minimal info I’ve read about crafting/professions, I am very interested in seeing exactly how it will be implemented.

One thing I think that would be great is if you can have a mark put on the items you make, so it is known you made that item. I am not sure on how the interface will be the game, but all you would need to do is have it so you could mouse over the item and it says “crafted by:(player name)”.

Okay, so I want two characters - one to be the freedom-loving, sleep-under-the-stars, pro-bono-work, awesome good guy hero. She'll buy a round for her pals at the tavern, she'll defend the defenseless, especially newbies, she'll man the defenses if the town comes under attack, she'll...I dunno, rescue kittens from trees. Help people gather resources, whatever work needs to be done. I want people to remember how I helped them, and to pay it forward and help other people when they need it. I want to make the PFO world a better place.

The second character, I want to be a bandit. Like soooo bad. I want to set up ambushes and taunt those wretched do-gooders and call them ridiculous things like "wretched do-gooders" because I will be an obvious villain and will revel in it. I'm not talking about griefing people, I'm talking about role-playing with people who are into it and giving them some smarmy jerk to revile and team up against. I want to RP the scheming and backstabbing that might go on in a villainous organization. I want to be someone's lackey, and then one day have lackeys of my own. I want to make the PFO world a more awesome place. :)

DEVS pay attention! :-)

If you can pull off game/combat mechanics that will allow to do proper RP without loosing precious microseconds that you need to not get instantly killed by your opponents, then I will be awed :-)

I'm mentioning it because I did (very little) PvP in DDO and WoW and the combat was so godawful horrible fast that I quit it pretty soon. It wasn't that I was thinking of doing any RP, but more like I hadn't time to think at all before being pawned.

So ... if you wanna carry over the spirit of PFRPG into PFO ... I think combat should rather be slow(ish) that fast and rather be tactical than based on reflexes ...

Usually in MMOs I play an industrialist of some sort. Thinking in PFO that I will look at the Ranger class and being the lone hunter that brings his rare animal bits in from the wilderness to sell to the more 'civilised' folk.

I suppose it all depends what and how the crafting / resourse gathering system works

But with three girls (6, 3 and 0), we will need to see how much game time I can actually get. :), so that will also affect what direction I take

I'd like to be a miner, just like in eve....

The kind of an innkeeper who welcomes you with a warm smile and tankard of mead, takes a meager pay for a room for the night and smiles and shows you to your room....

...but looks can be deceiving, heh...
