Im having quite an issue. A pc is playing a character who throws oversized rocks and wants to get enlarge person on him. Temporarily this seems ok. But it increases his damage to a ridiculous amount and is going to be extremely hard to deal with. Would it be overboard if I make a ruling that when he picks up rocks they increase in size making them to large to handle with proficiency. Therefore making it more difficult to throw them and having them decrease in size when thrown. Therefore lessening the damage.
Im trying to discourage his enlarge person without just playing god and saying no. Any advice would be helpful.
For all I know, the spell may actually work this way.

I know when using other ranged weapons namely bows the arrows revert to thier normal size once fired. The solution there is to have a second source of large arrows handy, usually on a mount where they wont be affected by the spell. I'd say for keeping this player from getting or staying out of hand at least is to make the uber sized rocks he's throwing less common in your setting unless the party needs the advantage to handle a big boss or something. also without the rock throwing ability just picking up rocks and throwing them wouldn't have much damage potential or a very long range increment. Enforcing the penalties for range along with lower real damage potential might encorage your player to do somehting a little more in the box.

This, but pointing out that items not on you at the time the spell is cast don't enlarge just cause you pick them up.
Enlarge Person isn't a bad trick to increase damage potential a little bit, but it's terrible for ranged builds (even if thrown adds strength to damage, it still uses dex for hit, and EP reduces dex on top of the -1 for large size)

The spell don't stat clearly if the items the character pick up after being enlarged are enlarged or not.
If they aren't enlarged your guy will in a world of trouble after he get permanently enlarged. All the normal armor will be useless for him. Same thing for weapons and every item that don't resize magically. He will count as a large creature for teleportation like magic, and all rooms will be too small for him.
A tankard of ale will have his normal effect but it will feel as a small glass to him (and better don't ask what this will do his sex life).
All that to get a +1 on damage and the ability to throw small rocks (if he has an appropriate ability)?
A small object throw do 2d6 plus 1 and 1/2 your strength bonus, so nothing spectacular.
